Fellow Rotarians and Friends,

Thanks to Jim Hawkins for stepping in and providing us with some videos of places we cannot visit at present due to border restrictions. We can only look forward to better times.

Andrew showed us the donation boxes which we hope to install at a number of retail outlets. It will add to the fund raising so if any of you have contacts at a retail store please let us know so a box can be provided. This will provide much needed funds to maintain the scooter fleet and any other worthy causes.

Andrew has also organized a sausage sizzle at the opening of the Benowa shopping centre where the club will provide manpower and a bbq for about three hours.

Next week is at the hub and the guest speaker from Act For Kids will be there. They have had to postpone a couple of times due to Covid so it will be good to hear from them. We will be able to see the new LED lights and see how much brighter they are. The electricity will be connected on 30^th August with a new smart meter so no more estimated power bills.

Thanks to David O’Dwyer for organising a cake for Alex’s 90^th Birthday which has been put off a couple of times.

On the Queen’s Birthday 3^rd October, Jimboomba Rotary are holding a bike ride – 30km , 70 km and 105km. Any bike riders?

I have recently updated this list with some changes that members have advised me of

Next Tuesday night (24 August) at our the Hub meeting we will be having a vote of eligible members to change the Clubs By-Laws in regard to Frequency of Board meetings. The vote will be determined by a show of hands from those present.

I have already circulated the motion to members and note that 81% of members have opened the Email. I have repeated it below for your information

Article 5 Meetings

Section 1 – Annual Meeting. An annual meeting of this club shall be held before the end of December in each year, at which time the election of officers and directors to serve for the ensuing year shall take place.

Section 2 – The regular weekly meetings of this club shall be held on Tuesdays at 6pm for

6.30pm. Due notice of any changes in or cancelling of the regular meeting shall be given to all members of the club. All members excepting an honorary member (or member excused pursuant to the standard Rotary club constitution) in good standing in this club, on the day of the regular meeting, must be counted as present or absent, and attendance must be evidenced by the member’s being present for at least sixty (60) percent of the time devoted to the regular meeting, either at this club or at any other Rotary club, or as otherwise provided in the standard Rotary club constitution, article 9, sections 1 and 2.

Section 3 – One-third of the membership shall constitute a quorum at the annual and regular meetings of this club.

Section 4 – Regular meetings of the board shall be held monthly as determined by the president.

Special meetings of the board shall be called by the president, whenever deemed necessary, or upon the request of two (2) directors, due notice having been given.

Section 5 – A majority of the directors shall constitute a quorum of the board.

Congratulations to clubs and districts around the world on setting a new record for fundraising in Rotary year 2020-21! We successfully overcame challenges created by the pandemic and raised over $355 million – surpassing our $340 million fundraising goal.

POLIO IN AFGHANISTAN

You may be interested regarding the impact of the situation in Afghanistan on the polio eradication activities taking place there.

PRIVP/International PolioPlus Chair Mike McGovern has released the following comment:

In 2021, despite internal conflicts and a global pandemic, Afghanistan is seeing unprecedentedly low transmission of wild polio, with just one case reported this year. Not only has the country seen a drastic reduction in cases of wild polio, polio surveillance data confirms this progress and significantly less virus is being detected in the environment.As conflict in Afghanistan quickly evolves, we must advocate for the children of Afghanistan. The polio program must work and communicate with all stakeholders involved to ensure that polio immunization remains a priority so that the gains we have made against polio do not diminish. We look forward to working with our polio eradication partners and the Afghani people to completely eradicate polio.

Sergeant for the meeting was David O’Dwyer who is currently standing in for Bill Waller.

Andrew McTaggart proposed the toast to all in New South Wales who are currently undergoing a major lockdown.

The president welcomed the guests including, Denise Jordan, Kathy Lewis, Pam Hawkins and Desley Daviess.

The President called for reports from the attending Board members and reminded the attendees of the sausage sizzles due on 7^th and 14^th September – fortunately there are adequate volunteers to cover both events.

Andrew then advised that the centre where he runs a newsagency is undergoing renovation and will have a reopening, at which they intend to hold a sausage sizzle. He advised that he will meet with the centre management to see if they would donate $500 to the club for holding the event. The sausages would be charged at a gold coin and management would retain this as well as supplying the ingredients.

Andrew then showed some collection boxes and the colours available for placing in local businesses however we (the club members) would need to maintain the collection of any funds donated on a regular basis.

Bunyips were then called and Peter Tomlinson and John Monks collected the fines.

There were two Heads and Tails contests with John Curr and Graham Sivyer the winners.

David O’Dwyer then asked Alex Jordan to come to the font of the meeting to congratulate him on his 90^th birthday last week. There was a wonderful large birthday cake which was then cut and shared by all the attendees. David was going to deliver some pieces to Russ Hutchison and Edwina who have both known Alex for a number of years, as have many members.

The guest speaker was unable to attend (at short notice) as he is located in New South Wales. Jim Hawkins then stepped in and treated us to some wonderful tours of Monaco, Venice, the beautiful beaches north of Cairns and our own Surfers Paradise.

The meeting was then closed by the President.
