Hello Fellow Rotarians

On Tuesday evening we had the pleasure of welcoming Councillor Paul Taylor, thank you for visiting Paul in our new premises.
We also had the pleasure of welcoming our Guest speaker Brenton Rickard. Brenton is the Manager for Sport Services for the Commonwealth games 2018 and a former champion swimmer, having won  six individual Commonwealth Games medals, three World championship Medals and two Olympic medals.  Brenton gave a presentation about his  life as an Olympian and the sacrifices that were required to perform at an Elite level and how now he has had to adapt to life after reaching those dizzy heights during his distinguished career. Brenton also brought along his Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for us to get up close and personal with and which was appreciated by all.
Great to see Nancy back from a long sabbatical in Canada.
Thank you to the members who have come forward to assist Pauline with the 45th Anniversary preparations.
As mentioned at the meeting our visiting Rotarians from Sister club Taraunga have enquired about being home hosted whilst here. Please advise if you will be able to assist. It appears at this stage that we could have 8 visitors from Tauranga.

Ray Milton advised that POOTY preparations are nearly complete and has asked for members book their seats for what will be a great evening.

We have the President of Surfers Sunrise as guest speaker this coming Tuesday which promises to be another great eveing of fellowship and fun at the Broadbeach Rotary Club.

Look forward to welcoming all Rotarians.
Best regards

Alain

One of things that happened to me when I first came to the Gold Coast as the Sewerage Engineer was that I was summoned to a Labour caucus meeting after hours. At that time the balance of power in the elected Council was Labour and the Councillor’s involved were John Laws, Athol Patterson, Jack Egerton (they called him Black Jack, I think from his penchant for wearing black shirts), the Mayor Dennis O’Connell and I think Keith Thompson at the time. I sat down and John Laws said to me “the dogs are barking”. I said what do you mean. “Someone is saying you are not going to finish the sewerage at the Council Caravan park in time for the December holiday period.” At that time we had a workforce of 500 laying sewers from one end of the Coast to the other. So I said I would check and advise the next day. I checked out how we were going in the caravan park and everything was on schedule to be completed well before the December holiday period. So I advised John Laws the following;
I don’t know which dogs have been barking about the Caravan park but they must be nervous, excitable types who should not be run in major events.
I survived!!

A tour of Rotary's 2018 convention city reveals one common thread: a welcoming spirit. Visitors to Toronto will also find world class museums, restaurants, shopping, and attractions, like the CN Tower and Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada. Register through 15 December to save on convention fees.
Thinking of attending the 2018 International Convention in Toronto?
Now is the time to act with discounted registration fees available until 15 December and accommodation options reducing daily as Toronto is hosting a separate citywide event during the Rotary Convention that is raising demand and prices for hotels. To make sure you find a room at a rate that meets your needs, we encourage you to book your hotel through Experient, Rotary’s official housing partner, as soon as possible.  For more information and to register visit www.rotary.org

The Rotary Foundation Weekly

The following is an extract from this months District Governors Newsletter detailing District 9640 Rotary Foundation Grants.
We have been fortunate to be one of the recipients having been granted $4000 to go towards our Alzheimer's project

DG Darrell's views on the effectiveness of 'The Expensive' v 'The Inexpensive', a couple of marvelous examples on Rotarians in our District making a difference and of course another segment in 'Rotary takes ordinary people and gives them extraordinary opportunities...' And District Foundation Chair Tony Heading explains where all the Grants have gone to.

This year, the District Grants Sub-Committee moved the deadline for applications to 15 June to give clubs sufficient time after PETS and District Assembly to plan 2017-18 projects. Clubs applying for District Grants have had to attend a Grant Management Seminar since the new grant structure was introduced in 2013. This is now only a pre-requisite for clubs seeking the more complex Global Grants. As a result of strong district support for the Annual Fund in 2014-15, US35,306 was available for the District Block Grant application. Although the Rotary International $A-$US exchange rate dropped in August, we were able to approve most club applications in full. All clubs applying received at least one grant. In total, district grants of A$44,485 will support A$44,805 in club contributions for projects to the value of A$120,160. The balance is provided by outside club support.

In approving these 23 District Grants, the District Grants Sub- Committee considered:

In approving these 23 District Grants, the District Grants Sub- Committee considered:

  •  a club’s history of support to the Rotary Foundation
  •  the club contribution (has to at least match the District Grant)
  •  Rotarian involvement ( all Foundation grants have to actively involve Rotarians)
  •  involvement of other clubs (this is encouraged, but not essential)
  •  previous grant history of the club (if funds are limited)
  •  applications received by the 15 June deadline.

Thank you to all clubs that submitted applications. Congratulations to the following clubs on their successful applications ‘to do good in the world’ through The Rotary Foundation.

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 3 OCTOBER 2017

Scribe:

David O'Dwyer

Les, our Sergeant for the evening opened the meeting and sucked most of us in about the homeless guy outside our venue.
Malcolm, proposed toast to our football teams.
President Alain, welcome members especially Nancy who returned after many weeks away in Canada and Honorary members Uwe and Paul Taylor.
Sergeant Les, then went into his task of extracting funds from as many members as possible, along with some little stories and jokes which added some merriment to the occasion.
President Alain, requested assistance from members in hosting our Kiwi and Japanese visitors for the 45th Function.
Ray Milton, gave report on the Police Award night which is progressing well and everything looks good.
Malcolm reorganising troops for the  Sausage Sizzle on Friday which he was successful at.
Pauline gave report on the 45th and everything appears under control. Hopefully more members than visitors attend.
Bruce, in Bob’s absence, conducted the Winners Circle draw and of course his fellow Officer from the Qld Police Dept won. Funny that!   Also Russ was a winner which cheered him up no end.

Bruce our Chairman for the night, then introduced our guest speaker Brenton Rickard who is now the Manager of Sports Services for the GC Commonwealth Games Corporation.
He gave a very interesting talk, starting off on his  swimming career in earnest in Cairns when he was 15 years old and was in the Australian swimming team at age 16 with his specialty being breaststroke.  He talked about the hours spent in the pool training 6 days a week and the mental aptitude required to remain focused and inspired. He was in the Australian Swim Team from 2002 – 2013 and won many medals which he had brought to the meeting and passed around.  He also broke some records as follows.

  • 2 Olympic Silver medals at Beijing 2008 (Bronze at London 2012)
  • World Champion and World record 58.58 at 2009 World Championships at Rome
  • Missed the 2004 Olympic team by 0.17 of second in the 100m Breaststroke
  • at 2006 Commonwealth Games, 3rd in 50m Breast by 0.13, 3rd in 100m Breast by 0.19 and 2nd in 200m Breast by 0.01. 0.33 between winning 4 Gold medals
He recounted an episode when swimming for the World Championship Trials in Sydney and unbeknown to him he had developed appendicitis, however the Team Doctor obviously knew as he told him straight after the event.
He retired at 2013 World Championships in Barcelona before starting in the Sport Dept at GOLDOC and he has seen the organisation grow from27 to over 800.

A very interest talk from a nice fellow and a great athlete who was very unassuming and a pleasure to listen to. There were quite a few questions and the meeting closed at 8.10pm.

WEEKLY LAUGHS

A lady walks into a bar and sees a really cute guy sitting at the counter. She goes over and asks him what he is drinking. "Magic Beer", he says. She thinks he's a little crazy, so she walks around the bar, but after noticing that there is no one else worth talking to, she goes back to the man sitting at the bar and says, “That isn't really Magic Beer, is it?" "Yes, I'll show you."
He takes a drink of the beer, jumps out the window, flies around the building three times, and comes back through the window.
The lady can't believe it: "I bet you can't-do that again."
"Oh yea?" He smirks.
He takes another drink of beer, jumps out the window, flies around the building three times, and comes back through the window.
She is amazed and immediately asks for a magic beer of her own.
The guy says to the bartender, "Give her one of what I'm having."
She gets her drink, takes a gulp of the beer, jumps out the window... and immediately plummets 30 stories down.
The bartender looks at the guy and says, "You know something, Superman? You're a terrible person when you're drinking."

While trying to explain to our six-year-old daughter how much technology had changed, my husband pointed to our brand-new personal computer and told her that when he was in college, a computer with the same amount of power would have been the size of a house.
Wide-eyed, our daughter asked, "How big was the mouse?"

One night a teenage girl brought her new boyfriend home to meet her parents, and they were appalled by his appearance: leather jacket, motorcycle boots, tattoos and pierced nose.
Later, the parents pulled their daughter aside and confessed their concern. "Dear," said the mother diplomatically, "he doesn't seem very nice."
"Oh please, Mom," replied the daughter, "if he wasn't nice, why would he be doing 500 hours of community service?"

A police recruit was asked during the exam, 'What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?'
He answered, 'Call for backup.'

One day I went through a STOP sign.
The cops stopped me and asked why I had driven through the sign, I told them I didn’t believe everything I read

Q: How many tickles does it take to make an octopus laugh?
A: Ten-tickles!!!

Q: What did Cinderella say when her photos did not show up?
A: Someday my prints will come!

Q: What starts with a P, ends with an E and has thousands of letters in it?
A: Post Office.

Q: Why did the boy put candy under his pillow?
A: Because he wanted sweet dreams.

Q: What's the best parting gift?
A: A comb.
