Fellow Rotarians,

Last weekend’s Rotary International District 9640 Conference was a motivating and productive. Each and everyone of the Speakers delivered their own message and advice on how Together we will achieve great things. On behalf of the Broadbeach Rotary Club a heartfelt thank you to DG Darryl Brown and the Organising Committee for their hard work in bringing this event together. It is an event that never disappoints and recommended to all.

Great numbers again last Tuesday evening. We welcomed our guest speaker Reverend John Brook from the Surfers Paradise Anglican Crisis Centre. John described the Crisis Centre s a not-for-profit incorporated charity on the Gold Coast. They assist People facing all kinds of hardship, from all walks of life, walking through their doors every day – they are helped based on their level of need, without any judgement.

The Crisis Centre welcomes all who need assistance – whether it is a meal to sustain them, help with basic household items, or advice and guidance – in a way that recognises an individual’s dignity, encourages their independence, and respects their privacy. As a volunteer organisation, the St John’s relies on the generosity and support of the local community to replenish our stocks of food ,clothing, toiletries, blankets and linen, utensils, and other items as needed. Therefore the Broadbeach Rotary Club generously made a donation of $2000 to the Anglican Crisis Centre which Reverend John was extremely grateful for.

Following communication between Service Director Harold and the Harding Family. Harold updated the Harding’s on the Cedar House/ Rosemary House Alzheimer’s project. Helen, David and Andrew have kindly agreed to make a generous donation of $15000 towards the project. It is a wonderful and extremely appreciated gesture which will be put to good use and will ensure that the project will continue to grow.

It was wonderful to have Bill Waller back with us and we wish you Bill a speedy and trouble free recovery. Also to Frank Adorjan hope your treatment is going well and hope to see you back very soon.

Next Tuesday we will welcome Chris Owen and I look forward to inducting Chris into the Broadbeach Rotary Club.

NEW MEMBER PROFILE

NIGEL HYLAND

Over the course of a substantial career as well as more than 30 years’ service to the community, I have built up a diverse range of skills in large‐scale events coordination, training and supervision of staff as well as business and operations management. I currently run a small business providing training to construction personnel on the safe use of heavy mobile plant, a role which leverages my interpersonal skills and ability to communicate complex matters in accessible language.

My commitment to community development, especially through the medium of sports has been recognized with an OAM, induction into the AFL Tasmania Football Sporting Hall of Fame (for 30 Years AFL umpiring) as well as the Sapphire Pin from Rotary International 2015. I carried the Olympic Torch in 2000 and Commonwealth Torch in 2006 and have run fundraising events which have raised millions of dollars over the last three decades from fun‐runs to 250km road and track relays.

I compete in marathons, representing the state on 6 occasions and with a PB marathon time of 2 hrs 27 mins. This experience has given me real insight into the role that these sorts of events play in the community, not just as ways to raise money but as community outcomes in their own right. My recent nomination for the Pride of Australia medal, noted my work for victims of the Qld Floods, Victorian and Tasmanian Bush fires, Redlands Neo Natal Hospital and Redlands Centre for Women amongst others.

RE-DISTRICTING

District Governor Darrell Brown announced the results of the vote on re-districting during the business session at the D9640 conference at Sea World last weekend.

D9640 25 Yes, 8 No (18 clubs did not return a vote)

D9630 37 Yes, 3 No (11 clubs did not return a vote)

D9600 42 Yes, 8 N0 (16 clubs did not return a vote)

The proposal was therefore approved and the three districts will merge effective 1 July 2021

DISTRICT 9640 CONFERENCE

The 2018 D9640 Conference was held at the Sea World Resort Conference Centre from 9th to 11th March.

DG Darrell promised "Fun with Rotary" and he and his conference organising committee certainly delivered. Over 580 Rotarians and Friends of Rotary attended over the 3 days and were well rewarded for the effort with lots of fun, fellowship, interesting, informative and inspirational speakers and entertainment.

Broadbeach was represented by President Alain & Kerrie, President Elect Pauline Armstrong, Nasser & Nayer Kaviani, Neil & Carol Baldwin, Harold Busch, John & Pat Curr, Noel & Kay Hodges, Neil Jones & Uwe Seifert.

Next year's conference will be held in Lismore from the 29-31 March and now is the time to start planning your attendance and booking your accommodation.

The Rotary Foundation Weekly

A 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and then a full-length marathon on hot, dry ground -- with no breaks in between: the legendary Ironman triathlon in Kona, Hawaii, is a bucket list goal for champion athletes. But when Minda Dentler decided to take it on, she had bigger aspirations than just another medal around her neck. She tells the story of how she conquered this epic race, and what it inspired her to do next.

A record-setting triathlete, Minda Dentler is a polio survivor committed to inspiring people to move beyond their fear of failure and achieve their goals.

Minda Dentler's life is one of inspiration, courage and determination. As an infant in India, she contracted polio, resulting in the paralysis of her legs, and was left at an orphanage. When she was three, she was adopted by an American family which enabled her to receive the medical care necessary to be able to walk with leg braces and crutches.

Undeterred by her disability, Dentler became an independent woman with the intention and drive to face and overcome the many obstacles she has encountered throughout her life. As an adult, she discovered athletics and threw herself into the sport of triathlon. In 2013, she became the first female wheelchair athlete to complete the Ironman World Championship, in Kona, Hawaii.

Sergeant Russ opened the meeting a little ahead of time and David O'Dwyer proposed the toast - on this occasion to past members.

President Alain welcomed our guest speaker Rev Jon Brool, Honorary members Ian & Uwe, and guests Pat, Edwina, Christine and Chris Owen. He also welcomed back Bill and Grahame.

President Alain reported on the District Conference and the results of the vote on the re-districting proposal - these are shown separately under Rotary Information.

Les gave an update on the new facebook page and urged members to "Like". Les also advised that Chris Owen will be inducted next meeting.

Bob Jordan reported on the carousel proposal and advised 12 members already volunteered meaning we will indicate participation.

President Alain outlined the opportunity to participate as parking attendants at Miami High School Park & Ride during the Commonwealth Games and is following up further.

Harold read correspondence from the Harding Family indicating their interest and support for our Sensory Garden project at Cedar & Rosemary Houses.

Sergeant Russ with the help of bunyips Jim & Uwe significantly lightened the pockets of all present. Jim won the raffle & Peter Dimond won Heads & Tails.

Harold Busch introduce guest speaker Reverend Jon Brook, general manager of St John's Crisis Centre, Surfers Paradise. Jon had been a registered nurse for 25 years prior to entering the clergy.

Jon outlined some background information on the homeless quoting statistics from the 2011 census (statistics from the 2016 census have not yet been released) including:

Over 105,000 homeless of whom 42% were aged under 25 and of those 17,845 were aged 12 and under.

In 2013/14 there were over 2,500 homeless on the Gold Coast with at least 40 families living in cars and 400 plus sleeping rough.

The major causes are domestic and family violence and family breakdown which is the leading cause of youth homelessness.

The crisis centre in 2017:

Served 18,722 meals

Assisted 2,380 people seeking financial & other emergency aid

Housed 31 homeless men with 96% occupancy rate

Provided Christmas Hampers and Christmas lunch for 126 people

Opened the church to provide shelter on 176 nights accommodating 1,849 people

The past year has been most difficult with a project to provide enhanced disabled access rapidly expanding to a major renovation project including new roofing, new fire wall, new shading and expanded office space at a cost of $750K and necessitating a major fund raising effort as well as a significant loan to enable completion.

With demand for its services ever increasing, the Crisis Centre needs larger premises to provide increased medical & allied health services, day beds and overnight shelter,; and greater emphasis on education and rehabilitation.

Harold, in thanking Jon, summed up the awe and admiration all present have for Jon & his team and the wonderful humanitarian service they provide to our community.

In recognition and to support the ongoing efforts of the centre, Harold presented Jon with a donation of $2,000.

He called his priest, his doctor and his lawyer to his bedside.
