We’ve had our second meeting back at the Hotel now, it’s great to be back onto the Rotary swing of fellowship.  That’s the first time I’ve heard Eddie Sarroff speak in public, off the cuff, funny and very informative.  Many thanks to Jim for organising.

At or next meeting, our speaker is the Gold Coast Police District Officer, Chief Superintendent Mark Wheeler.  Mark will be talking on policing the Gold Coast and the borders.  Quite timely given recent developments in Logan.  Tip for attendees, do not challenge him to a push up contest, the man has no off button.  We have several of Mermaid Club members attending what promises to be a great evening.

Many thanks to Sergeant Bill for lightening the coinage burden with his fine session.  Speaking of coins, thank you David O'Dwyer for cleaning out the Kurrawa Statue derriere of its burden, around $180 collected.

The Bunnings BBQ on Saturday 22 August is confirmed, the agreement has been signed.  If the weather gods smile, we stand to boost the club coffers.  Please let Ray know your availability for shifts.  They are 7am to 11am and 11am to 3pm (and beyond if stock and trade is good).

I’ve spoken to the Advance town Hotel re a potential event like a car show in early 2021.  Quite a simple process, on a Sunday, they trade as per usual, including a free band outside on a stage.  There are lots a car parks that can be roped off.  The deal is we manage the car show side, charging for entry to vehicles and sell raffle tickets.  They have had up to 300 vehicles at the Big Boys Toys show, so space and potential earnings are not an issue.  We promote the car show event and they’ll also promote the event on their social media sites.  Providing COVID restrictions allow, I’ll be seeking a volunteer committee to event manage that.

PP Bruce (and 9640 AG) suggested a Silver Circle.  As Bruce is an AG, he will be extremely time poor for club events and not able to manage.  The show of hands at the last meeting seemed to indicate we can get the 20 minimum needed to run it.  I am seeking a volunteer to take on that role please.

I’ve addressed the Scooter Program conversation and board meeting in an email to club members.

Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday night.

MALARIA PROJECT AUDIT REPORT - 1 January 2020 to 30 June 2020
The malaria research at Griffith University has been curtailed by the COVID 19 restrictions set in place by Government and the
University. In addition, the Principal Researcher Professor Michael Good has been requested to lead a team at the University to
create a vaccine for COVID 19. As the restrictions are lifted, it is expected that research on Phase 1 trials of PlasProtecT will
continue using a liposome (artificial membrane) to house the malaria vaccine. This will include toxicity testing of the vaccine and its
ability to activate the immune system. This will be followed by major trials in Melbourne where a sample of at least 30 volunteers
will test the efficacy of the vaccine when challenged by a malaria parasite.

Yours in Rotary

Neil

The “plus” in PolioPlus
With decades of experience stopping polio outbreaks, Rotary and our partners have a critical role to play in protecting communities from the COVID-19 pandemic, just as the we did with Ebola, yellow fever, and avian flu. From Pakistan to Nigeria, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative is supporting governments in their COVID-19 response efforts. This truly represents the “plus” in PolioPlus. FROM OUR LAST MEETING TUESDAY 28th  JULY 2020

Scribe: Pauline Armstrong

Sergeant Bill opened the meeting at 6.30.
Martin Ingram proposed the toast to all those Health professionals for their dedicated work regarding Covid 19.
Nayer Kaviani was presented with her Director’s pin by President Les.
He also welcomed Visiting Rotarian Pat Fleming and our guest speaker, Eddie Sarroff.
President Les announced that there are 2 new clubs being proposed; the Bundall Corporate Centre which will meet monthly and the 20/20 club which meets 20 times at random places.
At this we are planning to have our first sausage sizzle at Bunnings on 22 August.
Sergeant Bill had a quick fine session.
  • Eddie donated some foreign capital
  • All Directors
  • Pat Fleming for her second visit.
Guest speaker.
PP jim introduced Eddie Sarrof who is a past member of the club. Eddie is of Lebanese heritage and was born in Sydney. He returned to Lebanon as a child and stayed for 15 years. He returned to Australia to get and education and spent 18 months at university studying engineering. He left to earn a living and bought his first house when 19 years old. He owned 2 more at 21. He started a stall at the markets which led him to open his first store called Eddie’s Discounts. He then came to the Gold Coast and bought a property at Broadbeach. Frustrated with the red tape of local government he ran for council and was elected in 1995. As a councillor he introduced private security into the Broadbeach precinct and installed security cameras to address the perceived safety issues at Broadbeach. He introduced the Blues Festival which is still held each year. He championed light rail in the face of opposition and started the Broadwater Parkland development. He never followed the party line and always did his own thing. He was always a staunch supporter of local business.
Jim thanked Eddie and presented him with a Broadbeach tumbler.

Discussion re scooter project.
Last Rotary year a decision was made to charge each scooter recipient $100. Those unable to afford it would exempt. John Curr and John Monks both spoke as they felt the Board were changing the rules without appropriate consultation with members. They had started collecting monies but had no direction as to what is happening now.  Both have resigned from the scooter committee. President Les was asked if the Board were continuing with the project and he said that they were. PP Graham spoke and said the situation has developed due to a lack of communication. Several members spoke in support of the work done by these members and of the program. President Les said the matter would be addressed in a Board meeting and the members informed accordingly.

WEEKLY LAUGHS.

Karl Marx was a significant historical figure. But nobody mentions his sister Onya, who invented the starting pistol.

Why is it that after you chop a tree down, you then chop it up?

---------------------------------------------

The husband was notoriously lazy. The wife had been asking for months to have the dripping taps fixed. The husband kept telling her ' Do I look like a plumber?"
She asked him to charge the battery on her can and he replied " Do I look like a mechanic? "

She was getting pretty fed up with him and was reluctant to ask him to put a new fuse in the fuse box. Again his answer was " Do I look like an electrician? "
He came home from work to find all the jobs were done. the wife explained she found an all round handyman who did the whole lot in one day.

The husband asked how much it cost. She said ' Well he gave me the option of baking him a cake or sleeping with him.
The husband asked, " So what kind of cake did you bake for him?"
The wife replied, " Do I look like a baker?"

A version of the serenity poem from Paige

Grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change The courage to change direction when I see them coming And the wisdom to not try to smack some sense into them when I can't avoid them

---------------------------------------------

An angel loved jazz and on his days off used to play his harp at a nightclub run by one Samuel Franks.

One day he was having so much fun that he forgot the time and had to go rushing back for his rostered duty.  As he raced in through the pearly gates St Peter pulled him up and said,  “Hey, haven’t you forgotten something?”  And the angel said, “Oh my gosh, I left my harp in Sam Franks’ disco.”

---------------------------------------------

A band director was having a lot of trouble with one of his drummers. He talked and talked and talked with the drummer, but his performance didn’t improve.

Finally, in front of the whole orchestra, he said: “When a musician just can’t handle his instrument and doesn’t improve when given help, they take away the instrument, give him two sticks, and make him a drummer”.
A whisper was heard from the percussion section: “And if he can’t handle even that, they take away one of his sticks and make him a conductor”.

When my daughter was in Kindergarten, 5 years old. I had a phone call from the school office. The office lady could hardly talk for laughing so much.
My daughter had taken my partial lower denture to school for " Show and Tell " and yes, I had been searching the house for it.

Also absolutely true. Before my husband gave our daughter a kidney, there were endless Pathology visits. My two year old grandson being used to all this, was allowed to go the staffroom for a biscuit.

This particular day my daughter was returning a 2 Lt. bottle after doing a 24 hour urine collection. My grandson piped up " Me help Mummy "

For the whole 24 hour urine collection he had also been peeing in the container. Yes she had to repeat the test.

Unresolved mysteries from Richard

At a movie theater, which armrest is yours?

If people evolved from monkeys, why are monkeys still around?

Why is there a 'D' in fridge, but not in refrigerator?

Who knew what time it was when the first clock was made?

---------------------------------------------

Then there is the story of 2 nude statues, a male and female, which stood looking at each other in the town square for a couple of hundred years.

One day an angel said to them, “Would you like to be flesh and blood instead of stone for just a couple of hours?  Isn’t there something you would really like to do together after all this time staring at each other?”

They eagerly accepted.  After they had finished the female said to the male, “That was fun.  Shall we do it again?”  To which he replied, “Yes, but this time you hold the pigeon down while I poop on it.”

An Aussie was on a trip to America. Driving through a Native Reservation he saw a big sign. " Chief Moosehead, he knows all and remembers all "
The Aussie goes in and asks can he meet him.
Chief Moosehead shakes his hand and says " This morning you had eggs for breakfast." The Aussie said " You are correct" and they had a nice visit.

Ten years later Chief Moosehead arrives in Sydney for a holiday and the Aussie met him in Sydney.
The Aussie says " How?" and Chief Moosehead say " Scrambled."

Husband (a doctor) and his wife are having a fight at the breakfast table. Husband gets up in a rage and says, 'And you are no
good in bed either,' and storms out of the house.

After some time he realizes he was nasty and
decides to make amends and rings her up.

She comes to the phone after many rings, and the irritated husband says, 'What took you so long to answer to the phone?'
She says, 'I was in bed.'

'In bed this early, doing what?'

'Getting a second opinion!'

A new type of broom has come out.
It is sweeping the nation.

Would glass coffins be a success?
Remains to be seen.

Two gold fish are in a tank.
One looks at the other and says,
“You know how to drive this thing?!”
