Fellow Rotarians and friends
Our guest speakers this week had some interesting and valuable information regarding the maintenance of health. Fabian is an exercise physiologist and spoke regarding lifestyle choices and stressed the importance of eating healthy food and getting enough exercise. He also gave us information on how we might access a free service to guide us in making appropriate choices. The website is www.myhealthforlife.com.au for anyone interested in pursuing this further.
We have had emails from the district Secretary regarding scam emails. I had one this week purportedly coming from HQ in Evanston asking for details etc. It looked suspicious to me so I deleted it but I stress the need for us all to be careful.
On May 7th we are visiting the Crisis Care Centre at St John’s in Surfers Paradise. Could I ask if anyone going could buy a few toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap for us to donate. Also, if you have any unwanted gifts such as aftershave etc cluttering up your cupboards the centre will gratefully take them off your hands. These necessities mean a lot to someone whose self-esteem is at the lower end of the scale.
I am looking forward to the joint meeting with Inner Wheel this week to hear part 2 of Rod Preston’s presentation called, "secrets, spies and silicon valley".  I am sure it will as entertaining as the last time. I pity the scribe who will have to keep up with the torrent of information. We have 10 members coming from the Mermaid club so it will be a great night of fellowship.
Yours in Rotary
Pauline

The rocket that never flew

I have always felt privileged that I was lucky to be brought up in the 1950’s. In those days, during schools summer holidays we would spend all day at the beach or have cricket test matches in the street, used a bicycle to get around. The days when the rules were be home before it gets dark. The days when parents knew you were generally responsible to the extent where they did not have to worry where you were during the day.

In the late 1950’s as a young teenager I had a great interest in Chemistry and like many others had Chemistry set - which contained many chemicals that today would not be allowed.

One summer’s afternoon my brother and I decided to make a rocket. For fuel we used some chemicals from the set and made a mixture of potassium nitrate, sulphur and carbon, not realising at the time we were making gun powder. We found an old brass cylinder from a hand held atomiser spray and cut out some metal fins that we soldered on to the cylinder, filled it with the powder, sealed each end and made a hole in the base for the propulsion aperture. We made a fuse by soaking string in a super saturated solution of potassium nitrate and letting it dry.

That evening it was time to launch the “rocket” and we placed it on a concrete slab in the middle of the back yard, lit the fuse and took cover.

The resulting explosion would have been heard miles away and in this day and age would have attracted all emergency services.

However, our neighbour “Mr Stanton” was quick to approach us with a very aggressive statement “you’ve have blown all my bloody windows out” - a gross overstatement as it only shook his house.

So much for the short visit into the science of rocket making. The chemistry set was confiscated and my career into chemistry was over. Hence my entry into the more sedate commercial field

WEEKLY LAUGHS

A man went into the pet shop, "I am playing Long John Silver in the local amateur dramatic society’s version of Treasure Island and need a parrot to sit on my shoulder," he said.
"I don't have any parrots at the moment, but you wouldn't want a real parrot for that. It would squawk in all the wrong places, poop on your shoulder and generally be a nuisance. What you need is a stuffed parrot. Just as realistic and easily controlled."
"I'm not sure a stuffed parrot would be okay," said the customer. "I do want this performance to be as realistic as possible."
"I am sure a stuffed parrot would be fine," said the pet shop owner. "I have one at home. I'll bring it in and if you come back on Thursday you can have it."
"Sorry," said the customer, "I can't make it on Thursday. That's the day I'm having my leg cut off.”

Muldoon lived alone in the Irish countryside with only a pet dog for company. One day the dog died, and Muldoon went to the parish priest and asked, "Father, my dog is dead. Could ya' be saying' a mass for the poor creature?"
Father Patrick replied, "I'm afraid not; we cannot have services for an animal in the church. But there are some Baptists down the lane, and there's no tellin' what they believe. Maybe they'll do something for the creature."
Muldoon said, "I'll go right away Father. Do ya think $5,000 is enough to donate to them for the service?"
Father Patrick exclaimed, "Sweet Mary, Mother of Jesus! Why didn't ya tell me the dog was Catholic?

Q: How does a lumberjack start his computer?
A: By Logging On!

Q: What do you call a piece of wood with nothing to do?
A: Board!

Q: How do you kill a circus troupe?
A: Go for the juggler.

Q: What do you call a man with a car on his head?
A: Jack.

Q: How does the man in the moon get his hair cut?
A: Eclipse it.
