Hi Fellow Rotarians,

Welcome back!!!

I’m still here and awaiting the Changeover on the 10^th of July to welcome President Elect Pauline in the new role.

I would like to thank all Members, Partners and Guests for attending our social evening last Tuesday to help celebrate my last official meeting as President for 2017-2018. Although the meals for some, were a bit slow to be served, I think you would agree that a great time was had by all. One that had the full approval of all partners. The only business on the night was to Congratulate Past President and Inspector Bruce Kuhn for being awarded the International Law Enforcement Co- Operation Medal at the Queensland Police Service Gold Coast Awards presentation which Ray Milton and I were privilege to attend. Congratulations once again Bruce on behalf of all members of the Rotary Club of Broadbeach.

Next Tuesday we are at the Quality Hotel with GSE Representative Sarah McGuiness as guest speaker and I look forward to welcoming all of you.

MEMBER ANECDOTE

MALCOLM DAVIESS

In 2002 Desley and I ventured overseas for approximately six months. After spending two weeks in Paris we leased a Peugeot and traveled to the south of France staying

at Lamalou-les-bains located in the Languedoc area (very good wine). Here we met up with friends, using this town as a base to visit many other places Bordeuax, Avingnon, Set and many others.

After five weeks Desley and I travelled to Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol in Spain where we stayed in a two bedroom residence at Pueblo Lopez.

During our stay we decided to take an excursion to Tangier in Morocco. The bus left at 6.30 in the morning it was dark and raining heavily. When we were half way there the driver stopped and advised that the vehicle had a broken axle and another vehicle was on the way to continue our journey to the ferry terminal. On arrival authorities told us that the ferry had been cancelled because they could not dock in Tangier due to the rough weather. We later found out the ferry had already left!!

On returning back to Fuengirola we found that our car had been broken into and all the radio, CD etc had been taken. After reporting this to the local police we were told the matter had to be reported to the National police. This we did and after some time with an officer painstakingly translating our English we were presented with a statement to sign (all in Spanish) we signed and hoped for the best. The local Peugeot dealer was extremely helpful and restored everything back to normal. From this base we traveled to Granada, Seville, Malaga, Marbella, Barcelona and Madrid.

After five weeks we were travelling back to Nice France and stopped at a road house for lunch. When we continued back on the motorway we noticed the car had a flat

tyre. We pulled into a vehicle bay in the centre of the road to change the tyre and I was just finished fitting the spare tyre when Desley yelled “get out of there”. A guy was

looking in the front of the car, turned round and in broken English asked if I needed help, meanwhile his brother who had been hiding at the front of the car was busy

going through the glovebox. He dashed off with our backpack ( which fortunately only contained our toiletries ) raced to the other side of the Motorway to a waiting

Mercedes with the licence plates blacked out.

We continued our travel and obtained a replacement tyre, replaced the toiletries

Stayed in a nice town near Valencia overnight.

I guess one can say “The perils of travel“ However we enjoyed our total venture.

Annual Changeover Dinner

This important event where President Alain will hand over the chain of office to President Elect Pauline will be held at the Quality Hotel on Tuesday 10 July 6.30pm for 7.00pm.

President Nominee 2019/2020 Graham Sivyer will chair the evening and we will be joined by DG Darrell Brown (by then PDG).

As usual this will be a partner's evening and guests are also most welcome.

Cost $40 per person which includes a drink on arrival.

Let's send Alain off and welcome Pauline in a night of fun and fellowship.

Joint Meeting Wednesday 18 July 2017

In lieu of our usual Tuesday dinner meeting on 17 July we have accepted an invitation from Surfers Sunrise Club to join them in a special meeting at Surfers Paradise RSL Club.

District 9640 Peace Fellowship Chair, Ray Higgs has arranged for four Rotary Foundation Peace Fellows currently studying at the University of Queensland to come to the Gold Coast and present on what they do, their aims and how they intend to get there.

Burleigh Heads, Nerang and Surfers Paradise Clubs will also be joining us so this will be a great opportunity to join fellow Gold Coast Rotarians in fellowship as well as to meet current Peace Fellows from UQ and gain a better understanding of The Rotary Foundations Peace Fellowship Program.

Cost will be $22 which includes the meal, coffee and tea and 3 hours parking in Bruce Bishop Car Park across the road from the RSL Club.

FROM OUR LAST MEETING 26 JUNE 2018

Thirty Four Rotarians and friends enjoyed a wonderful evening of fellowship, fun, fine food and fine wine at the Quality Hotel Bar & Bistro.

It was a difficult task selecting from the wide ranging menu and apart from the odd delay in the delivery of some meals nary a complaint was heard by your erstwhile scribe (who was too busy enjoying his steak and lobster special together with a nice glass of Shiraz to notice).

It was a very fitting way to celebrate the last meeting of 2017/2018 and didn't President Alain look relaxed although with President Elect Pauline still to return home from the International Convention in Toronto, Alain will still be in the chair next week. Alain took the opportunity to advise those present that Past President Bruce Kuhn had been presented with The International Law Enforcement Co-operation Medal at a recent Police Awards Function for his service in Solomon Islands from January 2007 to May 2008. Bruce is pictured below with his medal and President Alain & PP Ray Milton at the awards function.
