What a mixed night on Tuesday – Malcolm’s 80th Birthday. The cake was delicious and our very best wishes go out to him on this milestone.

Susie Longman gave a most informative talk about the cancer council and its role in our community.

Sadly the notification of Ian Cowan’s passing was a reminder of how we as a club have experienced the friendship of such special people. It was wonderful to see the large turnout of Rotarians to Ian’s memorial with quite a few past members putting in an appearance to pay their respects and support Gay and the family. Some members who attended the service however have not been able to attend Rotary over the past few months, many due to ill health, stated that hopefully, we will see them again in the next months, we look forward to their return.

It is thanks to the volunteers in the club who have manned the sausage sizzles and taken care of the hub throughout the year that we were able to donate $2,000 to the District flood appeal. Without their generous donation of time and effort the club would not be in this position. It is those members who have enabled the scooter program to be as successful as it has been.

We have been approached to assist with scooter problems in Murwillumbah and surrounding areas and, as a club, we will do what we can to help.

As well as the District flood appeal, if you have any goods you can donate to David’s daughter, I am sure both David and his daughter would be extremely grateful for whatever assistance you can provide. Please check with David as to his daughter’s current needs.

Next week we currently do not have a guest speaker due to the lack of attendees. It is difficult to attract interesting speakers when we only have 15 odd members attending.

VALE IAN WALTER COWEN

Our esteemed Honorary Member, Ian Cowen PHF, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday 3 March, just 15 days short of his eighty sixth Birthday.

A Memorial Service for Ian was held on Thursday March 10 and was attended by at least 20 members and many more past members of the Club.

Ian was president of our Club in 1990-1991. A selfless contributor to our club over many, many years, Ian will be sorely missed

Sergeant at Arms Neil Jones asked for a donation to the District Flood Appeal rather than individual fines. The monies are to be added to the $2000 donation which the Board approved for this Appeal.

David O’Dwyer spoke about the flood at Lismore where his daughter resides. The flooding at Lismore is catastrophic as the height of the flood was much higher than the previously highest recorded flood in 1974. His daughter as well as most other residents in Lismore have lost all their belongings and house contents in this flood. The Club has agreed to support David with members donating any spare replacement clothes ,furniture and appliances etc.The supply of building, plumbing and electrical materials is dire as all of the facilities supplying these items have been flooded as well.

Assistant District Governor Bruce Kuhn also spoke about the flood and the measures being proposed by District to assist flood victims. He talked about the extent of flooding and waste pileup at Murwillumbah and Tumbulgum. District funds will be generated in a Flood Appeal with tax deductions for donations. The Assistant District governors are coordinating efforts between their areas. Bruce advised that while the cleanup was vital and greatly appreciated ,the main support needed in the flooded communities will come later, as people return and try to build their homes and communities.

Susie Longman of the Qld Cancer Council gave an interesting talk on what the Cancer Council does besides research into cancer cures and treatments.

Susie advised that cancer touches all our lives at some point and whilst many of the cancer treatments in Australia are world class and free ,many people need financial and emotional support during these times. The Qld Cancer Council is helping in this regard and continued community support for this organisation is warranted and highly beneficial. Recent advances in treatment are remarkable.

A comment about cancer was highlighted and used to conclude the talk. Cancer is a word and not a sentence.
