There was a good attendance of 19, including Visiting Rotarians Helen and Ron Derrick – Surfers Paradise Rotary, Guests Helen Busch and Pam Hawkins and Honorary Members Uwe and Kevin.
As usual we had a great 3 course meal provided by Kouma. Cec was the Lucky Door winner – congratulations.
We noted with sadness the passing of one of our Honorary Members Paul Taylor. Tonight we were to host Paul’s son Darren as our Guest Speaker and this has been postponed.
Good to welcome Ron Borland back after his overseas sojourn.
It was interesting that Helen and Ron visited us, as it appears they may be forced out of their current meeting venue and were looking at The Hub as a possible meeting venue for Surfers Paradise Rotary.
Members were reminded of the various activities being planned during October for Fundraising for Polio Plus. Plus, the District 9640 AGM and Foundation Seminar on Sunday 16 November was also mentioned.
Ron and Noel provided an update on the Rotary Friendship Exchange hosting and visit by Rotarians from Arizona and the plans for our next meeting on Monday 20 October, which I am sure will be a great night. Special thanks to Harold who has been able to ‘acquire’ a new BBQ for the Club, through Bunnings Community Benefit Program – well done and will be well utilised for the catering on the RFE night.
We also discussed the possibility of conducting a meeting on Melbourne Cup night, but the anticipated number of attendees unfortunately could not sustain a meeting. Discussion was also held on the cost for our Christmas party Dinner at Esprit de Vie Mermaid waters on 16 December, with an amount of $40 per head being agreed.
We were then treated to a great Member Behind the badge presentation from Barbara Burnheim. What an interesting life and experiences – all contained on a Mind Map.
From starting out in Nursing to then a Theatre Nurse, then an Occupational Health Nurse with WD & HO Wills (makers of Benson and Hedges). This role took Barbara over an extensive area of the world, including PNG, Indonesia (where respect is immersed in religion), Singapore – where Barbara was responsible for the Asia region, then expanded to Africa and Europe. After all this Barbara established her own Consulting Company mainly working in Europe, then Mapping Companies in Australia, then a greater challenge teaching Literacy to members of the Australian Defence Force.
What a life, what a journey and what a presentation! Thank you - Barbara.
I am confident that members will provide support to Neil Jones as he goes through his health issue and we wish Neil a speedy recovery as he progresses through this health battle.
