Dear Fellow Rotarians,
What a great night of fellowship last week when we joined with the Mermaid Beach club and Inner Wheel for our meeting. The noise level was an indication of how much chatting was going on! I think it is a venture worth repeating. Our guest speaker. Rod Preston did not disappoint, and I look forward to the third presentation. He was telling me he has 18 such presentations as he does a lot of lectures on cruise ships so we should never be stuck for a guest speaker.
There may be vacancies on the USA / Canada Rotary Friendship Exchange on June 28th to July 13th, 2019 in Seattle & Vancouver. Bill Rex has all the details if you are interested at this late date. Please call him on 0418796302.
Bruce is safely home from his GVE visit to the Philippines. To all accounts he had a great time so I look forward to his presentation with all the photos. I know some people followed him on Facebook so they will be more up to date. The group who visited here apparently really enjoyed it. I even got a text from Group Leader, Grace Vinarao, from the airport as she was leaving. She said they were all sad to go as they had enjoyed it all so much.
Easter Greetings to you all. If you are travelling, please keep safe.
Yours in Rotary
Pauline.

SECRETARY REPORT - Tony Lewis

The following are some questions that are often asked by non-Rotarians

Who are Rotarians?
Rotarians are people like you and I. Traditionally they have been persons in positions from all walks of life.

What Rotary Isn’t
Rotary isn't a religious, political, or nationalistic organisation. It does not interfere with the men and women members’ religious, political, or other beliefs. Rotary isn’t some kind of secret society. There are no secret handshakes or the like. Rotary clubs are a bunch of like-minded people united in their desire to make a difference in their community and the world.
It isn’t a social club, although strong fellowship is a key component that unites the club in its projects. Members are expected to make a contribution to the life of the club, to the extent that they are able. Rotary offers plenty of scope for members' initiatives and for the promotion of their concern for the community at large.
Rotary isn't "an old boy's club" dominated by an established group of cronies. It is intentionally structured to offer leadership opportunities to all its members.

Can my company be a member of a Rotary Club?
The simple answer is Yes, via organisational membership, however it must be pointed out that only individuals can be a member of a Rotary Club not the organisation.

Am I allowed to bring other people along to Rotary?
Absolutely yes! You are most welcome to bring along guests at any time. If you have a partner and/or children, they are also most welcome to attend Rotary at any time.

How often does the Club meet?
Most Rotary Clubs throughout the world meet on a weekly basis. The Rotary Club of Broadbeach meets Tuesday evenings
6:00 pm Arrive
6:30 pm Meeting Commences
In Rotary, this is commonly referred to as 6.00 for 6:30pm start, and we finish at 8:00pm.

Is there a regular Club newsletter to members?
Yes - The Rotary Club of Broadbeach bulletin “Rotarlight” which is distributed via email to members and friends of Broadbeach

What are the Objectives of Rotary?
The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
  • FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.
  • SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of their occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
  • THIRD The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to their personal, business and community life.
  • FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.
  •
    Does Rotary have a Motto?
Yes - it is `Service Above Self'. It also still has its' original motto of `They Profit Most Who Serve Best'. In addition, Rotarians aspire to The Four Way Test: It goes like:
The 4-Way Test of the things we think, say or do:
    1 Is it the TRUTH?
2 Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3 Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4 Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

We recently had a most enjoyable road journey down to Victoria to bicycle the rail trails around Bright and Wangaratta. Basing ourselves in Beechworth we rode between the towns of Myrtleford, Milawa, and Bright,  in the high country
We stayed in a beautiful house with a spectacular garden with many bees. The time came to leave on a leisurely drive back to the Gold Coast  over a period of 3 days. The scenery was spectacular and miles rolled by enjoyably . The time came to stop temporarily and we noticed a swarm of bees hovering around us and attacking the windows with a degree of aggression. Not thinking too much about this we continued on our enjoyable journey for a few more hours when it came time to stop for lunch. Again the bees came from nowhere and surrounded the car on mass. Must be all the flowers, we thought, Victoria is indeed the Garden State! Continuing our journey after a fabulous lunch at Yackandah we stopped momentarily and again mysteriously bees came from nowhere . Claire became a little concerned as she has an allergic reaction to Bee stings and consulted Google . The possibility of a swarm of bees building a nest behind the grill  and locating a Queen Bee there was now a real probability from our garden in Victoria and joining us on our interstate journey. Google advised strongly not to open the bonnet  as they would be likely to attack if they had a Queen in there . Reaching our motel in Young we phoned the local Police station to locate a bee keeper. He promptly arrived and investigated thoroughly without finding any problem and refused to accept any payment . A reflection of country people I am sure . He postulated that each time we stopped we lost a number of bees as they would be unable to catch us up, until we were finally ‘bee-free’.
About 10 Kilometres from The Queensland border we were brought to a halt by a single policeman .We were four cars back on the left lane of a two lane highway and we could see he was positioning a spike strip on the right lane . Looking like we had ringside seats of a tire bursting spectacular we looked on with great anticipation. The rope was pulled and the spikes locked in place as the policeman  saw the fast approaching car under chase by his colleagues. The driver was however not to be denied and with quick thinking drove at about 150 kilometres per hour on our left side with clearance of approximately 6 inches both  between us and the rail . The policeman was in his path and moved like a panther to just escape . We wondered what would have happened if the driver had lost control and taken us all out . All in all an adventure - filled drive home .

FROM OUR LAST MEETING 16 APRIL 2019

Scribe: Grahame Werrell

We were joined by the ladies from Inner Wheel and members of the Mermaid Rotary Club to hear the second presentation from Rod Preston titled “Pigeons, Spies and Secrets”

The dinner was well attended being a special Ladies Night; we had some 62 enjoy the presentation.

Rod welcomed us to the mysteries and untold tales of the mail. His talk invited us to delve into the covert role of spying on mail from the medieval Italian City States to the European Pocket Mail services to the modern hacking and social media. He told us of the weird and unbelievable items that have been posted in the mail including people?

From George Washington to thwarting a Spanish invasion of Australia in the early days of Sydney Cove he continued to explore how spying on mail has changed the course of history. From the Italian City States to social media and the use of mail in therapy. He explained the major role pigeons played in the early years of mail delivery including their use in war.

Rod discussed how mail has been used in scandal, scams and skulduggery and the spin used by junk mail advocates and those who have made legal and illegal fortunes through the mail.

We also found out how the 007 stories started with then Commander Ian Fleming retiring and writing the James Bond series. We viewed Blelchley Park the first training ground where government spies were schooled.

We finished up with a look at message development and the Silicon Valley revolution.

To thunderous applause Rod has kindly offered to return and give us another story from his wonderful repertoire.

WEEKLY LAUGHS

I have been thinking about my next trip:

I have been in many places, but I've never been in Kahoots. Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Kahoots with someone.
I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.
I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my children, friends, family and work.
I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore.
I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often.
I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.
Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older.
One of my favourite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!
I may have been in Continent, but I don't remember what country I was in. It's an age thing. They tell me it is very wet and damp there.
I’m sure I’ve spent some time in Satiable and in Corrigible, and even in Coherent.
I’ve even been in Appropriate.... but I should never have gone there.

Then on the 2nd May in for my hip replacement so no more tripping (I hope) for awhile.
