A good attendance with the combined BBRC and Inner Wheel to hear Federal MP Angie Bell talk about her experience in Rotary.
Angie was an exchange student to Denmark towards the end of her high school studies and is now an honorary member of the Passport RC.
This weekend there will be a working bee at the Men’s shed Arundel to label and store the orthopaedic equipment donated by Prof Don Pitchford.
Look forward to fellowship with you next Tuesday at the Hub.
 
Board Meeting 19/11/2019
Presidents Report.
I was only able to offer a ‘verbal report’ on the 15th October as I had just returned from our Clubs assessment at Mauna Hospital on Pentecost Island Vanuatu.
In summary:
The Rotary International project at Mauna hospital is ‘on track’.
We [Dr Denis O’Brien, Mario Fairlie and Dr Shweta Jacob had flown from Brisbane to Port Vila, liaised with the Rotary Club of Port Vila and the Australian High Commission [M/s Jenny Da Rin] and then flew onto Lonores airport on Pentecost.
Here we were met by a delegation of islanders and Dr Richard Leona and travelled by four wheel drive vehicle to visit 6 health centres on our way to Mauna hospital in the north of Pentecost.
At Mauna hospital we were met by local dignitaries and escorted around the hospital.
Facilities are very basic.
Through local fund raising over the last 3 years in Port Vila, Dr Leona had built an operating theatre in the hospital.
He is seeking assistance to add and house an XR and pathology facility [needed to check red cell counts, blood and urinary infections and to cross match blood for transfusions] attached to the hospital.
Towards the end of our stay we were invited to attend a gathering of elders and chiefs as well as the paramount chief of Pentecost.
At this gathering we were advised that the community were in need of the facility and we were thanked on behalf of the people by the Paramount Chief.
Des La Rance is ready to proceed with the ‘flat pack’ building for Mauna hospital as soon as funds are available. He advises that the time to build the flat pack would be about 6 weeks.
I have also liaised with the Director of Orthopaedic surgery at the Gold Coast University Hospital who has donated orthopaedic appliances in good condition that are to be discarded by the hospital following a single use.
Last Sunday [17th October] a number of Rotarians including John Curr, Nigel Hyland and Nasser Kaviani from our club, Brian from the Men’s shed and Mario Fairlie and Franz Huber from Surfers Sunrise club] moved these appliances to the Mens Shed Arundel.
Prof Don Pitchford, Director of Orthopaedics at the GC University Hospital met us at the Hospital and assisted in the removal of the devices.
The plan is to ship these appliances to Mauna hospital along with the flat pack building.
On Friday our club provided a BBQ farewell to the visiting Rotarians from America.
Thanks to all the host families particularly Noel and Kay Hodges, and to Bill Rex for arranging the food and for liaising with the other hosting clubs and to Pat and John Curr for assisting.

Friday 10 April 2020 to Sunday 12 April 2020 - Visit to Tauranga (NZ) Sister Club
At Easter 2020 our Sister Club Tauranga will celebrate its 75th anniversary and is inviting members of Sister Clubs Broadbeach & Kasaoka to join them for this special occasion.
A program of events is being arranged and more details will be advised. Home hosting will be available for Broadbeach members & partners but if you prefer to arrange hotel accommodation this should be done as soon as possible as Easter is a very busy time in Tauranga.
We will look at organising some additional touring either side of the Tauranga visit - possibly self drive people movers/small bus depending upon numbers.  If you are interested in joining in the visit to Tauranga please let Neil Jones know.  A meeting of interested members will be convened in November.
 
Medical Supplies Destined for Mauna Hospital
Equipment no longer required has been donated to Rotary for re-distribution to overseas medical facilities.
Members of Broadbeach & Surfers Sunrise Rotary Clubs collected the equipment last weekend and transported it to the Surfers Sunrise shed where it will be stored until it can be shipped to Pentecost Island with the planned flat pack medical rooms early next year.
 
 
Farewell Function For District 5020 RFE Team
On Friday 15 November a BBQ function was held at The Hub to farewell the visiting Canadian/US Rotary Friendship Exchange Team.
Forty nine Rotarians and friends enjoyed an evening of fellowship and fun. Our visitors included DGE Andy Rajapakse and members of Gold Coast, Hope Island, Surfers Sunrise and the Passport Rotary Clubs.
Many thanks to Noel & Kay Hodges who organised the catering and to the many Broadbeach members and partners who helped to make this a very successful event.

Notes from Joint Meeting with Broadbeach Inner Wheel held on Tuesday 19 November 2019
Stand in Sergeant (at the last minute) Nigel Hyland welcomed everyone to the Meeting.
President Graham extended a warm welcome to the members of the Inner Wheel Club, their guests and guests of Broadbeach Rotary as well as the Guest Speaker for the meeting – Angie Bell Federal Member for Moncrieff.
Neil Jones proposed the Toast at the Meeting.
Jim Hawkins discussed the upcoming International Rotary Conference to be held in Hawaii during June 2020 and invited any interested Rotarians to contact him to discuss their attendance.
Pam Pagram – President of the Inner Wheel Club – made a presentation of a cheque of $1000 from the Toyota Awards to Phia Damsma of Sonokids and also mentioned that Phia will be receiving a United Nations Award in Vienna for her work with children with hearing and sight difficulties.
President Graham Sivyer discussed the joint building project with Surfers Sunrise, Gold Coast and Broadbeach on Pentecost Island in Vanuatu and thanked the members for theor assistance in transporting orthopaedic devices for shipping to Vanuatu that have been donated from the Gold Coast University Hospital.
Sergeant Nigel conducted the Fines Session with Bunyips Alain Charles and Andrew McTaggart and Neil Jones won the Raffle and John Curr the Heads and Tails.
We all enjoyed a great meal and it was noted that generally it was the Steak for Males and Chicken for Female attendees.
President Graham then introduced the Guest Speaker for the Meeting – Angie Bell the Federal Member for Moncrieff. Angie acknowledged the role of Rotary in her life, having been a Rotary Exchange Student to Denmark and on her return to home in South Australia being awarded a Rotary University Scholarship. She has an Electoral Office comprising 4 staff and in her short time in Parliament has achieved a change in classification to the Gold Coast area with reference to Student Visas, with the Gold Coast now classed as a Regional Area, which benefits the Universities operating on the Gold Coast. Questions were asked with reference to Infrastructure spend and assistance to Small Business, with Angie arranging to schedule an appointment with Peter Tomlinson to further discuss this topic.
President Graham thanked everyone for their attendance and closed the meeting.
