Join with Rotary this week to promote the power of vaccines

World Immunization Week is an opportunity to raise awareness about the effectiveness of vaccines and mobilize community support for immunization.

In July 2022, WHO and UNICEF reported the largest sustained decline in childhood vaccinations in approximately 30 years. An estimated 12.5 million children in the world are totally unvaccinated.

Vaccination is one of the best tools we have to improve people’s health and well-being. Global vaccination programs for preventable diseases, such as polio, need to continue to protect vulnerable children and prevent outbreaks.

Rotary members have proven the good that vaccines do by immunizing 3 billion children against polio and reducing the cases of polio by 99.9% since 1988. But we know the job isn’t done until every child is vaccinated, and polio is stopped for good.

How polio effort is helping battle malaria
Health workers in Pakistan go door to door administering the polio vaccine. Volunteers in Zambia perform a dramatic skit showing how malaria spreads. These efforts may seem very different, but they're deeply connected. A global partnership has mobilized millions of workers, reached underserved populations, and gathered unprecedented amounts of health information in the fight to end polio. That work by Rotary and its partners is also proving crucial in the battle against malaria. Learn more for World Malaria Day, 25 April. And read a blog post from Eric Liswaniso, program manager for Malaria Partners Zambia, who lost his parents to malaria when he was young.

FROM OUR MEETING 18 APRIL 2023

Scribe: Jim Hawkins
Sergeant Neil Baldwin opened the meeting with information on happenings on this day over the years.

He then went on to congratulate “birthday boy of this day” Bob Jordan.
Bob featured again with the announcement of his recent 56th wedding anniversary to Denise.
Neil also made sure that everyone was also aware of the 57th anniversary of Jim & Pam over the past weekend.

President Andrew welcomed everyone present in the usual manner and advised us of some upcoming plans to help in the gardens at Lady Small Haven.

Earlier Jim had passed on another $50 plus coin collection from the good customers of the Gumnut Café at Mudgeeraba to treasurer Neil J.   Amounts collected from this one source are now well in excess of $200 in recent years – another great idea from Pres. Andrew.

We soon moved into dinner time where we were served a delicious 3 course meal by our popular new chef Couma - well assisted by his lovely lady.

After that Sergeant Neil B. conducted a brief session with some simplified collection of spare cash followed on with the winner of the raffle being Nasser and heads and tails winner - Barbara Burnheim.

Pres. Andrew then advised us of the members of his management team for our next year of Rotary – plenty of experience included, paving the way for another good period for The Rotary Club of Broadbeach.

Sarah’s Activities Segment
President Andrew briefed us on the rules to apply for the construction of the highest tower possible using the supplied materials of spaghetti sticks, sticky tape and marshmallows.
The eventual winner was adjudged as the group of Kevin, Pauline, Nasser & Jim.  Kevin embarked on the role of chief designer, engineer & construction manager with great enthusiasm that quickly spread to his assistants on that team.
The meeting eventually wound up approximately on time and it was clear that this was a great night, much enjoyed by all in attendance.

The week in Pictures

                                      Enjoying fellowship before dinner

Harold was on the Door             Acting Sergeant Neil                  President Andrew

The team commences construction                  The finished tower - not free standing

Many hands make light work but the end product will not stand without a helping hand

Looks a solid construction but the look on Denise's face says it all as collapse is imminent

Perfect planning brings winning results - a free standing tower

Nasser won the door prize                             Barbara won Heads & Tails

WEEKLY LAUGHS
I was disappointed to find out that a defibrillator doesn't stop my
children from telling fibs, even after multiple tries.

My friend Iain has one eye bigger than the other!

A friend and I went up to the Bonza check-in desk this morning.
The girl asked: "Do you have reservations?"
I said: "Yes, but we're flying with you anyway."

“I” before “E” except after “C” has been disproven by science
