My Experience of being stationed at Quipie.

One of the many towns I was posted to in my Banking career was Quilpie about 750 kilometres west of Brisbane.

It was also Margaret’s first transfer from the big city of Brisbane and it came as a culture shock to her also.

I arranged to drive out to Quilpie in my Triumph Herald and for Margaret to fly out with the two children, Susan aged 3 and David aged 1.

My first shock was the 150 miles of Dirt road between Charleville and Quilpie It took about 5 hours with the car just making it.

I stayed at the main Hotel in Quilpie, for the couple of nights. There were two other Hotels one mainly for the shearers to drink at and one for the aborigines to drink at. (The graziers socialized at the Quilpie Club) The next shock was trying to have a shower with the water smelling like rotten egg gas but with dust all over me from the trip I had no option.

The House I stayed at Quilpie was comfortable enough except it had a stove fuelled with wood. As the previous tenant had a gas burner to cook with my first job was to go fossicking for timber to enable us to cook. We put up with a wooden stove for about a month until we were able to purchase our own gas burner. The Running water was provided by bore water and as it came out of the ground hot it was first piped into an overhead open tank in the back yard to cool off before being pumped into the house. I made the mistake of climbing up the tank to look inside, but what I saw put me off drinking the water for a few days.

The seasons were of two varieties hot summers and cool winters. No activities happened in summer, except for breasting the bar at the pub next door to the bank until it was cool enough to walk home. All the activities happened in winter. Golf, Basketball, Tennis & Rugby league. Even Dance functions and Balls were only ever winter events.

Golf was on sand greens and was played with army gators on to keep out the burrs.

Summer was so hot we even looked forward to Dust Storms which tended to cool the air down during and a couple of days after. During the storm we tried shutting all windows and doors to keep the dust out but that proved a waste of time. Dust got in anyway.

There was an Apex Club, which is where I first met Peter Tomlinson.

I could continue but the above gives a summary of life in Quilpie in the late sixties

My only true anecdote relates to my good friend the Late Neville Clifford who had unfortunate honour of being held up more times than any other Bank Manager. 4 times in all. One involved the robber making an appointment with Neville, walked into his office with in with a gun and said this is a hold up. Just then the phone rang and Nev told the robber that he had better take it in case someone got suspicious. Nev answered the call and the voice on the other end said “this is your friendly AMP insurance agent can I interest you in increasing your policy. With that offer Nev said, looking at the gun pointed at him increase it to a million starting now. The good news is that the robber proceeded to rob the bank without harming anyone.

Rotary’s national advocacy advisers are putting polio on the world stage. Here’s how.

At the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta in June, world leaders were on hand to celebrate a historic $1.2 billion in commitments to finance polio eradication. It was a huge moment for the polio eradication effort. But how did it come about?

A group of Rotary volunteers has been hard at work behind the scenes: our PolioPlus national advocacy advisers. This team of Rotarians from donor countries has a mission to make sure polio eradication is on the global agenda. In the corridors of power, they relentlessly work their connections – lunches with government officials, phone calls with ministers – to garner money and support for ending the disease.

And they’ve been successful: Since Rotary’s advocacy program started in 1995, it has generated more than $8 billion toward ending polio.

Past RI Treasurer and member of Parkwood Rotary Club, Brian Knowles is PolioPlus National Advocacy Adviser for Australia.

The inspirational story of the Sisters of Mercy is one of courage commitment and persistence in satisfying unmet Health care needs of Queenslanders

The Sisters of Mercy Commenced In Dublin 1851 and had requests to move around the world they started a hospital in 1906 in Brisbane at North Quay there are 7000 staff over seven hospitals and the culture within is excellent The first hospital had 141 patients Fund Raising was run by the Sisters up until 1949 utilising various activities in 1917 the Mater Art Union Commenced and they now have a Foundation that requires 15> 16 million per annum of income

A new hospital being a woman’s critical care unit where pregnancy assessment centre is available 24 hrs 10000 babies are born with 11000 expected in 2018 The latest equipment is utilised in the performance of operations e.g.using robotic arms very successfully

Greg revealed there is a Mater Centre for Neurosciences a lot of research is being carried out in major health categories E.G. Autism, Diabetes Leukaemia, Health Disease, Ovarian, Prostate Breast Cancer Etc.

Mater have also developed a young Adult Health Centre for 18 to 24 yrs for Diabetes, Respiratory, Drug and Mental Health State wide

Chairman Jim Hawkins thanked Greg Beard for an excellent presentation and presented him with a Club Banner

President Alain in summing up referred to the meeting as positive and the XMAS party next week also commitments to Club rosters and revenue schedules
