Dear fellow Rotarians

Well, we are off and running into a new year of Rotary. I hope we can all relate to the RI President, Barry Rassin’s theme for this year of Be the Inspiration. In our lives we are all inspired by the efforts of others. The recent worldwide effort to save the boys in Thailand is one example of what can be done and the individual and collective efforts of all involved was inspirational. Hopefully we can show the community the difference Rotary makes and inspire them to contribute also.

Thank you to all those wonderful people who filled in for me while I was away, especially Alain for continuing for one more week just when he thought he was done and dusted! Congratulations to him for a great year. I look forward to watching over the completion of the wonderful project he initiated at Cedar House and Rosemary House. It will benefit many people for years to come. It is a wonderful legacy for Alain.

Thank you also to Graham for organising and chairing the changeover dinner. He did a great job and is enthusiastically taking on the position of President-elect.

Congratulations to Harold for receiving the Bruce Duncan award and being awarded a PHF on the same night. We will ensure he receives appropriate accolades when he returns. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Thank you all for your good wishes. I hope it is a great year for us all.

I often wonder how many members are aware of some of the "rules" of Rotary.

The following is an example of one of them:

RULE OF 85 ATTENDANCE EXEMPTION

What is Rotary International's position on Rule of 85?

It is hard to find because it is not officially called the "Rule of 85” or a type of Rotary membership ("Active" or "Honorary" are the only two) - it is merely a provision listed under "excused absences" in the Standard Rotary Club Constitution

The Rule of 85 is an exemption from the regular attendance requirements stated in the Constitution of the Rotary Club of Broadbeach (Article 9 Section 3 (b)

Therefore this rule applies:

Where the age of the member is 65 and above and the aggregate of the member's years of

age and years of membership in one or more clubs is 85 years or more and the member has

notified the club secretary in writing of the member's desire to be excused from attendance and the board has approved.

Upon Board approval, the member is still responsible for:

• District dues

• Rotary International dues

• Any other fees mandated by Rotary International and/or District 9640

• Club fundraising project participation

• Cost of meals when attending meetings

Rule of 85 members are strongly encouraged to:

• Support the Rotary Foundation with a contribution to maintain the club's Every

Rotarian, Every Year (EREY)

• Support and participate in club service projects

• Participate in club social activities

ALMONER REPORT - Bob Jodan

PP Alain has spoken with Harold Busch who is recovering from his back surgery and will be out of Hospital on Friday Alain said Harold was thrilled to hear he had won the Bruce Duncan Fellowship Cup.

Spoke with Keith Hawton who advised that recent test results were most pleasing and he is feeling the best he has for some time but does not anticipate being able to attend dinner meetings in the near future.

MEMBER ANECDOTE

RUSSELL HUTCHISON

Anecdote related by Margaret Speering, Russ's eldest daughter.

As a young fellow possibly just 50, my Dad (Russ) took my younger sister Edwina (15) on a road trip from the bright lights of the Gold Coast to visit his Mum (my Nan) in Hilston NSW, a mere 20 hour drive out west away.

Upon arrival, a tad hungry and exhausted they were greeted by Nan to a sit down country lunch of chicken, Dad took one look at the grey chicken that had a horrendous odour....estimating the chicken was possibly two/three weeks old and told Edwina not to eat the chicken. With that Nan told Dad to stop being so fussy and sent him to his room in trouble. With that Dad, without questioning or back chatting obliged with his Mum's request/order and did as he was told.

My sister was perplexed with the situation of Dad being sent to his room by his Mum and could see the funny side of it. Edwina rang Mum back home where she was looking after my brother John and me, explaining that Dad was in his room with the door shut in trouble and that Nan was cranky with her 50 year old son for being too fussy with his food! Many a chuckle was heard into the phone.

The moral of this story is...You are never too old to be sent to your room!!!!!

Meet RI President Barry Rassin

RI President Barry Rassin, a member of the Rotary Club of East Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas, is asking Rotarians to Be the Inspiration this Rotary year. In addressing the closing session of the 2018 Convention in Toronto, Rassin encouraged Rotarians to take the time to understand the real needs of their communities by talking to people in those communities, and to become agents of change through leading by example. Joint Meeting Wednesday 18 July 2017

In lieu of our usual Tuesday dinner meeting on 17 July we have accepted an invitation from Surfers Sunrise Club to join them in a special meeting at Surfers Paradise RSL Club.

District 9640 Peace Fellowship Chair, Ray Higgs has arranged for four Rotary Foundation Peace Fellows currently studying at the University of Queensland to come to the Gold Coast and present on what they do, their aims and how they intend to get there.

Burleigh Heads, Nerang and Surfers Paradise Clubs will also be joining us so this will be a great opportunity to join fellow Gold Coast Rotarians in fellowship as well as to meet current Peace Fellows from UQ and gain a better understanding of The Rotary Foundations Peace Fellowship Program.

Cost will be $22 which includes the meal, coffee and tea and 3 hours parking in Bruce Bishop Car Park across the road from the RSL Club.

Our Tuesday night Changeover Dinner was a marvelous event with a very pleasing attendance of members, partners and guests.

We had apologies from Honorary Members Ian Cowen, Keith Hawron, Uwe Seifert & Kirstin Yelland and members Frank Adorjan (health), Neil Baldwin (travel), Harold Busch (hospital), Les Bulluss (work), Nasser & Nayer Kaviani (family), Cec McPaul (transport), Kevin O'Brien (other commitment) & Chris Owen (Family bereavement).

President Elect 2019/2020, Graham Sivyer was our master of ceremonies and did an excellent job.

Outgoing President Alain welcomed members and guests - PDG Darrell Brown, visiting Rotarian Trevor Taylor, Mathew & Daniel Armstrong, partners and family.

The Toast to Rotary International was proposed by Nigel Hyland and PDG Darrell responded.

John Monks proposed a toast to partners to which Haidee Diaz responded in multiple languages.

President Alain presented Paul Harris Fellowship awards to Immediate PP Bruce Kuhn & outgoing Treasurer Peter Dimond and Sapphire pins to Noel Hodges and Bob Jordan and Ray Milton. Alain also announced a Sapphire pin has been awarded to Harold Busch and will be presented at opportunity.

Jim Hawkins, the 2016/2017 recipient, announced Harold Busch as the 2017/2018 winner of the Bruce Duncan Fellowship Cup which will be presented to him when he is next able to attend our weekly meeting.

Following a PowerPoint presentation "12 Months in 12 Minutes" put together by Neil Jones, Alain made his final report which was received with acclamation. Alain recognised and thanked his Board for their support and guidance throughout the year.

Alain then asked PDG Darrell to join him as he passed on the Collar of Office to 2018/2019 President Pauline whose initial address to the Club was greeted with acclaim.

Pauline presented Past President Alain with a framed certificate of appreciation from the club, thanked President Elect Graham for organising and chairing the changeover function and then introduced her Board.

Graham congratulated Pauline, thanked all for their attendance and closed the meeting.
