President's Message

Dear all,

Our guest this week, Emma McTaggart, gives us good reason not to stereotype about today's youth, "kids these Day's etc".  Let's  not forget the future leaders, the silent majority, who are doing great things, and have our future in good hands.  A little tip without stealing incoming President Alain's thunder, but he's working on another, watch this space...

The first of our replacement scooters will be used this week as part of our replacement program, plus Hope Island accepted their first five scooters as part of an expansion.  How good would it be to have other clubs be as strong as us, how many individuals could benefit?  Onwards and upwards!!

Welcome back Neil and Bill from Tauranga and we look forward to your presentation next week.

Bruce

I was born on July 6th 1969 in Elizabeth South Australia where I lived until I was 8 years old and moved with my parents and two older brothers to Thame in England. My parents owned a small country pub in the town where my mother lived as a child. After two years in England we all moved to Brisbane where I attended Springwood High school. After finishing school I moved with my parents to the Gold Coast and started my career in hospitality. With the introduction of poker machines to Queensland my roles changed from food and beverage management to gaming management. After several positions in Qld from the Gold Coast, out to Mt Isa and then on to Cairns in North Qld I moved back to the Gold Coast and worked at Jupiter’s Casino.
On the return, back to the Gold Coast I meet my beautiful wife Narelle and we were married at St Margaret’s chapel in 1998.We built our dream home on acreage in Tallebudgera valley. We were than blessed with our first daughter in the year 2000, Sarah and then again two years and a day later with our second child Emma. In between having children my wife and I started our own business, Benowa Gardens News which we still successfully own today and is the luckiest little lotto shop in the whole of Benowa.

THE DISTRICT CONFERENCE

Most Rotarians have never attended a Rotary district conference. They have not experienced one of the most enjoyable and rewarding privileges of Rotary membership. A district conference is for all club members and their spouses, not just for club officers and committee members. The purpose of a District Conference is for fellowship, good fun, inspirational speakers and discussion of matters which make one's Rotary membership more meaningful. Every person who attends a district conference finds that being a Rotarian becomes even more rewarding because of the new experiences, insights and acquaintances developed at the Conference. Those who attend a Conference enjoy going back, year after year. Every one of Rotary's 500 plus districts has a conference annually. These meetings are considered so important that the Rotary International president selects a knowledgeable Rotarian as his personal representative to attend and address each conference. The program always includes several outstanding entertainment features, interesting discussions and inspirational programs. One of the unexpected benefits of attending a district conference is the opportunity to become better acquainted with members of one's own club in an informal setting. Lasting friendships grow from the fellowship hours at the district conference.

Information on District 9640 2017 Conference is shown below.

This year we are celebrating 100 years of our Rotary Foundation doing good in the world.

WHAT IS A ROTARY PEACE FELLOW?

Established in 2002, each year, Rotary selects individuals from around the world to receive fully funded academic fellowships at one of the peace centers.
These fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and all internship/field study expenses. Two types of peace fellowships are available. Rotary offer master’s degree fellowships at premier universities in fields related to peace and conflict resolution and prevention. Programs last 15–24 months and require a practical internship of 2–3 months during the academic break. Each year up to 50 master’s fellowships are awarded from these institutions:
 Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, US
 International Christian University, Japan
 University of Bradford, UK
 University of Queensland, Australia
 Uppsala University, Sweden

Nominations for the current year are now open.

WEEKLY LAUGHS
The president of a big bank fell off a seagoing yacht.
While his friends frantically sought a life preserver, a sailor shouted, "Hey, can you float alone?"
"Of course I can," gasped the floundering banker, "but this is a hell of a time to talk business."
-----------------------------------------

Two fellows stopped into an English pub for a drink. They called the proprietor over and asked him to settle an argument.
"Are there two pints in a quart or four?" asked one.
"There be two pints in a quart," confirmed the proprietor.
They moved back along the bar and soon the barmaid asked for their order.
"Two pints please, miss, and the bartender offered to buy them for us."
The barmaid doubted that her boss would be so generous, so one of the fellows called out to the proprietor at the other end of the bar, "You did say two pints, didn't you?"
"That's right," he called back, "two pints."

Murphy showed up at Mass one Sunday and the priest almost fell down when he saw him. He'd never been to church in his life. After Mass, the priest caught up with him and said, "Murphy, I am so glad ya decided to come to Mass. What made ya come?"
Murphy said, "I got to be honest with you Father, a while back, I misplaced me hat and I really, really love that hat. I know that McGlynn had a hat just like mine and I knew he came to church every Sunday. I also knew that he had to take off his hat during Mass and figured he would leave it in the back of church. So, I was going to leave after Communion and steal McGlynn's hat."
The priest said, "Well, Murphy, I notice that ya didn't steal McGlynn's hat. What changed your mind?"
Murphy replied, "Well, after I heard your sermon on the Ten Commandments, I decided that I didn't need to steal McGlynn's hat after all."
With a tear in his eye the priest gave Murphy a big smile and said; "After I talked about 'Thou Shalt Not Steal' ya decided you would rather do without your hat than burn in  Hell?"
Murphy slowly shook his head. "No, Father, after ya talked about 'Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery'.....
I remembered where I left me hat."
