A very enjoyable evening once again last Tuesday with our visiting Rotarians Warwick  from Christchurch, Eric from Boonah  and Rotaract Yu_Cheng Lui (aka)Magic from Taiwan followed by our fabulous guest speaker Lara Hickling a Facilitator and Director of the successful award winning Queensland Traffic Offenders Program. Lara is quite keen to revisit for a more in-depth presentation with some live demonstration of the effects of drug and alcohol whilst driving.
 
Magic provided us with some insight about his visit to Australia, walking from Melbourne to Sydney over 43 days. He walked up to 18 hours a day and covered between 25 to 50 klms a day.
Magic by name for obvious reasons was able to display his skills with a few card tricks or two.
 
Further to last week’s President’s report , it has now become evident that the BBRC may no longer be able to sustain the costs applied by the Hotel for not being able to meet our attendance numbers. Over the last two weeks the Club has had to pay over $350 from the Admin Fund. I am sure you would agree that very soon we will not be able to afford to pay for those costs. Therefore us as members of BBRC we will need to unfortunately make some decisions.
 
Hard working Administration Director Bob has been communicating with the Hotel about a possible review of attendance numbers  to a fair, economical and respectable level. Further Bob and Secretary Tony have met with another venue and are awaiting their response.
Thank you to the members who have provided us with options and feedback about alternate venues. Please keep coming forward with ideas
 
However it is business as usual and I would like to report on some fantastic news.
 
“ I am  pleased  to  advise  that  Harold  Busch  has  agreed  to  join  this  year’s  board  and  will  assume  the  role of  Community  Services  Director.  Harold’s  knowledge  and  enthusiasm  will be  welcomed  on  the  board.
 
Harold  will take over  major   community  projects  including  being  the  liaison and  controller  of  our  Alzheimer’s  project. If  the  club has  an  involvement  with  the  Commonwealth  games  either directly  or in  association  with  District Harold  will be  our  representative.
 
Harold  replaces Noel  Hodges  who  is  to   take over  the  Youth  Services  portfolio  following  the  resignation of  Laurie  Lynch. Further Pauline has also agreed to assume the role of Foundation Director”
Extremely pleased to have the support of a very strong, experienced and hard working Board.
 
Secondly, our application for a District  Grant to support the Alzheimer’s project at Cedar House Mudgeeraba has been approved. My thanks go to Vice President Neil for his assistance with the application.
 
“On behalf of District Governor Darrell Brown and the District 9640 Rotary Foundation Grants Committee I am delighted to advise that $4000 has been approved by the Rotary Foundation for a District Grant to support the Broadbeach Rotary Project “Alzheimer’s Australia (QLD) Cedar House, Gold Coast Sensory Garden”. The Grant of $4000 is one of the largest ever approved by District for any Rotary club.
We look forward to getting to work on the project asap.

SECRETARY REPORT - Tony Lewis
Just a few items from the Board meeting held 8th August 2017.
Following a request from Suicide Prevention to conduct a BBQ on their behalf on 10th September 2017, Noel Hodges and Grahame Werrell have volunteered to work at this event and the Club will donate the sausages and other food requirements for this BBQ
 
Bob Jordan has been contacted by Bunnings requesting us to staff the Tradies breakfasts held on the last Friday of each month, commencing at 6.00am. Bunning have offered $200 vouchers and/or extra Saturdays as compensation. Bob will discuss these options with Bunnings
A request has been received from Rotary District 6980 Central Florida USA to host a team during the period 17th February and 19th March 2018. It was agreed that the Club will be one of the hosts.

All good news this week.
 
Cec’s  wife   Margaret  reports  that  Cec is  improving steadily but  still  no  sign of  return  to   Rotary. Will check again with her in a couple of weeks.
 
Russ   advises  that   after  looking  for  a  couple of  weeks  they have  located  his  heart and  things  are  on  the  improve.  Unfortunately for us this probably means the fines sessions will be more severe.

MEMBER ANECDOTES
RAY MILTON
 
 
Some years ago I had been invited as a guest to a major real estate franchise networks black tie annual awards night at the Sheraton Hotel in Brisbane
I checked into my room and at the appropriate time got the lift down to the function rooms floor.
I exited the lift and walked around the corner to find several people gathered there.
As I arrived a waiter came by and offered me a glass of champagne which I accepted.
More people gathered and I enjoyed a second champagne as the waiter went past.
As time went on I realised there was no one at the function that I recognised.
At that moment the bride and her husband came around the corner shook my hand and thanked me for coming.
Somewhat embarrassed I thanked them for inviting me and wished them a long and happy life together.
When the coast was clear I made my way around the next corner to find my intended host’s looking out for me and asking where have you been?
We were just about to start without you.
I apologised for being late saying I had been held up at a wedding reception.
Ultimately the awards night was a huge success.

Barry Rassin selected to be 2018-19 Rotary president
Barry Rassin, of the Rotary Club of East Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International for 2018-19, and will be declared president-elect on 1 September if no challenging candidates have been suggested. Rassin’s nomination follows Sam F. Owori’s death in July, just two weeks into his term as Rotary International president-elect.
 
 
2019-20 Rotary president selected
Mark Daniel Maloney, of the Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama, USA, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International for 2019-20. He will be declared the president-nominee on 1 October if no challenging candidates have been suggested. A Rotarian since 1980, Maloney has served as an RI director; trustee and vice chair of The Rotary Foundation; president’s aide; zone coordinator; and a leader on the Future Vision and 2014 Sydney Convention Committees.

District Grant Approved For Alzheimer's Project 
(excerpt from approval letter dated 1 August follows)
 
Greetings President Alain,
 
On behalf of District Governor Darrell Brown and the District 9640 Rotary Foundation Grants Committee I am delighted to advise that $4000 has been approved by the Rotary Foundation for a District Grant to support the Broadbeach Rotary Project “Alzheimer’s Australia (QLD) Cedar House, Gold Coast Sensory Garden”.
 
Regrettably the funds requested for District 9640 Grants exceeded the available funds, so some projects were not funded or only partially funded..
 
Your approved grant funds are held in the District 9640 Foundation Account and in accord with our District procedure will be released direct to your club’s Community/Project Account on a reimbursement basis once the project is completed.
 
More on this exciting new project shortly.

GOLD COAST POLICE OFFICER OF THE YEAR AWARDS - TUESDAY 17 OCTOBER
The thirteenth annual presentation of The Gold Coast Police Officer of the Year Award will be held at the Southport Golf Club on Tuesday 17 October 2017.
Southport Rotary Club has kindly surrendered its venue to us and will be joining us for this special event on our annual Rotary calendar.
Cost on this occasion will be $55 per person. More details when finalised.

BROADBEACH 45TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION DINNER - SATURDAY 4 NOVEMBER 
Planning is underway for this milestone celebration and invitations have been extended to our Sister Clubs for this special event which will be held at Southport Golf Club on Saturday 4 November 2017. Update on Sister Clubs' Ophthalmology Project
 
FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 15 AUGUST 2017

The meeting opened with all the razzle/dazzle of an Elvis concert with compere and sometimes Sergeant, Kevin revving, no whipping, inciting the gathered Rotarian masses into excited delirium as he introduced our President, Alain!!
 
Welcoming guests Magic from Taiwan, Warwick from New Zealand and a Eric from Boonah, coupled with our honorary members Ewe and Ian, our fearless leader opened the meeting with aplomb.  David toasted the Lithgow Flash, the late Betty Cuthbert OAM.
 
Alain announced the granting of $4k from District Grants for the Rosemary House Alzheimer's project.  What a great achievement, well done to all involved. Bob spoke regarding meeting venue options and will report back further once he checks out some further venues.
 
We were then entertained by Magic, who performed some card magic, I learnt a few thing for my trip to Vegas this week, I doubt I'll have any issues........  Be it the two of clubs or nine of diamonds I doubt anyone knows how he did what he did.  Magic had also walked from Melbourne to Sydney via the scenic route, just because.  What a fascinating  young man, a Rotaract member and obviously going places.  Melbourne to Sydney for starters.
 
Sergeant Kevin then tapped anyone who wasn't a dual citizen and anyone who looked sideways at him found themselves at least a gold coin lighter. Winner of the heads and tails was Graeme and Lucky John Curr the recipient of a raffle prize bottle of exquisite wine from Rays private reserve.....
 
The meeting was then enthralled by the live wire that is Lara from Queensland Traffic Offenders Program.  Great work, outstanding results and some really sobering stats.  I'm looking forward to hearing more about this great program.
 
The meeting closed with President Alain thanking our guests and we made our way into the night.

This Strange English Language

We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes;
but the plural of ox became oxen not oxes.
One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice;
yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.
If the plural of man is always called men,
why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?
