I think I speak for everyone when I say what a wonderful guest speaker Daniel Ricardo was this week. Daniel is a teacher at Merrimac State High School and it is so encouraging to know that teachers of his calibre and enthusiasm are there for our kids. He definitely has the ability to teach but he also gets his students so engaged that they actually come in over the school holidays. I am delighted that we are funding some of this project and we wish the team well as they leave for the international competition I Tokyo. I also look forward to his return visit when he will bring some of the students to report on this competition.
I visited the Orchid Society las week to accept a cheque for $5000 for our drought relief fund. We will discuss where the money is to go at the club meeting next week, so I encourage you all to put your thinking caps on to ensure we spend it wisely.
 
The family Christmas party is in the calendar for December 2nd at Albert Park. We have over 40 people attending so it should be a great day. Please bring any games along so that we have plenty to do. We hope to have Santa so hopefully someone will offer to fill this worthy position.

DURING OUR TRAVELS TAKING IN HONG KONG IN 1983  (YES SOME TIME AGO )ONE OF OUR EXPERIENCES WAS TAKING A TRIP TO SHENZHEN , SHENZHEN IS A CITY IN CHINA LOCATED ALONG THE SOUTHERN TIP OF THE COUNTRY SPREAD ACROSS 1994 SQ KIL0METERS AND LIES ALONG THE EASTERN BANK OF THE PEARL RIVER . IN 1979 IT WAS ESTABLISHED AS A SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE . THE TOWN WAS ONCE HOME TO THIRTY THOUSAND PEOPLE BUT NOW HAS A POPULATION OF OVER  10  MILLION .
WE BOARDED A TRAIN FROM HON KONG THROUGH TO THE STATION NEAR THE SHENZHEN BOADER ON OUR ARRIVAL FOUR OTHER TRAINS HAD ARRIVED AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THERE WERE PEOPLE EVERY WHERE RUSHING TOWARDS THE HONG KONG IMMIGRATION WHICH YOU HAD TO BE CHECHED THROUGH BEFORE BEING PROCESSED THROUGH CHINESE IMMIGRATION . ON THE CHINESE BORDER WE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL GUARDS WITH RIFLES AT THE READY KEEPING A VERY STRICT CONTROL OF MOVEMENT.
ONCE THROUGH WE WERE MET BY A  FEMALE GUIDE WHO TOOK US ON AN EXCURSION THROUH OUT THE CITY VIEWING THE TRANSITION FROM VERY OLD TO NEW. EG  HOUSING, RETAIL AND INDUSTRY. WE AISO ENJOYED A FIVE COURSE CANTONESE MEAL FOR LUNCH ONE COULD NOT BELIEVE THE NUMBER OF BIUE COLLAR WORKERS ALSO HAVING LUNCH .
WE WERE TAKEN TO THE LOCAL MARKETS AND WHAT AN EXPERIENCE.AS WE ALIGHTED FROM THE BUS THERE WAS A LARGE GROUP OF MEN POINTING AND STAIRING AT DESLEY AND AN ENGLISH LADY ON OUR TOUR THE FASCINATION WE WORKED OUT WAS THEIR COLOURED HAIR COMPARED TO WHAT THEY WERE USED TO .
MOVING THROUGH THE MARKETS WAS INTERESTING PARTICULARLY THE DIFFERENT FOODS ON DISPLAY.
WE CAME ACROSS THE MOST AIR CONDITIONED BUTCHER SHOP WE HAD EVER SEEN OUT IN THE OPEN THERE WERE DIFFERENT CUTS OF BEEF, PORK, DUCK. CHICKEN. SNAKE AND DOG . ONE CUSTOMER CAME ALONG AND BOUGHT HALF A PIG THREW IT OVER THE BACK OF HIS BIKE RODE OFF WITH THE ENTRAILS DANGLING OVER HIS BACK WHEEL.
ON OUR RETURN TO THE BORDER FOR DEPARTURE OUR GUIDE WHO WAS EXCEPTIONAL SAID HER GOODBYE APPROXIMATELY 600 METERS AWAY WHEN ASKED WHY SHE STATED THAT IF SHE WENT CLOSER SHE WOULD BE ARRESTED .THAT WASTHE COMMUNIST RULING THAT STILL EXISTED.
WHEN BOARDING THE TRAIN BACK TO HONG KONG IT WAS PACKED WITH PEOPLE WITH LIVE CHICKEN AND  BAGS OF PRODUCE BOUGHT ON THEIR VISIT.
WE LEARNT THAT PRODUCE WAS FAR CHEAPER IN SHENZHEN THAN HONG KONG .
TODAY SHENZHEN CITY ADVANCES IN HI TECH , LOGISTICS ,FINANCIAL,AND CULTURAL INDUSTRIES HAS CONTRIBUTED TO ITS HUGE POPULATION GROWTH, THE CITY WAS RANKED 19TH IN THE GLOBAL FINANCIAL CENTRES INDEX EXPATRIATES CHOOSE SHENZHEN AS A PLACE TO SETTLE BECAUSE OF THE JOB OPPORTUNITIES AS WELL AS CULTURAL TOLERANCE OPEN MIND NESS AND WAS VOTED CHINA’S MOST DYNAMIC CITY IN 2014

Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) to Rotary District 5020 west coast USA and Canada in July 2019

Rotary Friendship Exchange is open to all Rotarians and partners. The exchange is for 2 weeks, with the team members being hosted with Rotarians from the west coast of USA and Canada, the area including Seattle and Vancouver Island.

You can apply to be part of a team of up to twelve, to participate in this great Rotary experience of culture, friendship and hospitality from 2nd - 16 July 2019 in District 5020. This is a very popular area for Australians to visit and could provide a great opportunity to visit other parts of USA and Canada either before or after the exchange – eg cruising the Inside Passage, seeing Alaska?

Rotary travel insurance will cover the exchange plus up to 60 days private travel.

The incoming visit to our District by Rotarians from District 5020 is planned to occur in November 2019 and clubs of outbound team members are expected to host the inbound team, during their 14 - 15 days experience within District 9640.

Proposed Rotarian Action Group for Women and Youth
 
You are invited to be a founding member of a Rotarian Action Group for Women, Girls and Youth– WRAGGY.
RI requirements are that we have 50+ members ahead of submitting our application, which we are on target to achieve by the end of the month.
Founding members will participate in the structure and operation of the new RAG including voting in the members of the Board. Fees will be part of the discussion.
The plan will be to use the group to promote members’ projects at Rotary conferences and conventions to encourage female and youth engagement and leadership.
Currently the female membership of Rotary is around 22 percent and the average age in clubs is rising dramatically. We need to find ways to attract and retain women and youth and have Rotary influence similar leadership changes in our communities.
What will you get out of belonging to WRAGGY? Think of it as ‘value added’ for your Rotary membership!

FROM OUR LAST MEETING 9 OCTOBER 2018

Sergeant Les opened the meeting and introduced President Pauline
 
The toast for height was to all football code players, both men and women and proposed by PP Ray Milton
 
President Pauline reminded members of the family Chiistmas party to be held on 2nd December
PP Noel Hodges presented President Pauline a cheque for $5000 received from the Orchid Society as a donation to our drought relief fund.
 
Nasser and Nayer Kaviani gave the members a very interesting overview of their recent trip overseas where they visited their daughter, a lawyer in Malawi
 
PP Ray Milton told members that there are nominations for 32 Police Officers, 3 Police Stations/Units and 7 support officers for the Police Officer of the year function to be held at the Quality Hotel on 30th October at a cost of $55 per head
 
Sergeant Les had another entertaining session.
Bunyips (to celebrate October fest) were Uwe and Herman. David O’Dwyer received a fine for another speeding fine
The raffle was won by Bill Rex and Heads and Tails was won by Neil Baldwin. Neil donated his bottle of wine to the guest speaker.
 
Guest speaker Daniel Ricardo
Introduced by PP Harold Bush. 
Daniel is a teacher of 12 years, presently at Merrimac State School where he heads up the Steam Robotics Programme. Daniel has 4 children of his own all under 8 years of age .Our board has donated $8,000 towards the cost of the ongoing workshop .Notable achievements include winning the 2017Australian Robotics Challenge and the 2017 World  Robotics Summit in Tokyo.  In 2018 they were the Queensland zone champions.
Steam Robotics Programme encompasses Science, Technology, arts and Mathematics. Daniel also works with many other Primary schools in the Gold Coast District.
One of their great achievements was to build a Wills controller. This enabled Will a student at their school who had Cerebral Palsy to be able to communicate with his parents and fellow students for the first time in 13 years, as well as able to play Video Games. These achievements won a Technical award .Another notable achievement was to regenerate hundreds of out of date computers given to schools by Kevin Rudd and sent them to students in third world countries.
The talk was followed by many questions from the members and a Vote of thanks by Harold.
