Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Thank you for your participation at last week’s Club Assembly to openly raise and discuss the issues important to our Club, Members and the community. I hope this provided a platform not only from my year but more importantly it has provided you with some food for thought moving forward towards Pauline’s year. Once again thank you to all that participated.

We also welcomed Nigel’s friend, visiting Rotarian Robert Powell from the Rotary Club of Ulladulla,NSW.

Harold updated us on the progress at Cedar and Rosemary House. Harold advised that the first working was scheduled for Saturday 12^th May. So All hands to the pump. Work has now commenced at Cedar House and I’m please to report that the first part of the sails has been erected. Unfortunately there has been a few hiccups with one of the sails and it will be back to the drawing board to ensure a successful outcome very soon. The team was also very active building outdoor tables and chairs.

I would like to thank Harold for liaising with all parties to bring this working bee to life. Also a big thanks to Pauline, Harold, Kevin, Uwe and Neil J for their hard work. It was also a beautiful morning at Cedar House and the fellowship was outstanding. The next working bee is coming up very soon and I look forward to seeing some new faces helping us.

Listening to President elect Pauline calling for suggestions of projects for her fast approaching year as President of the Best Rotary club in the World made me reflect on some of our previous ones . Not many of our present members would realise that we ran a very successful Picnic Race Meeting . Yes on Sunday November 29. 1981 The Broadbeach Rotary Club actually did so at Waterway Down Estate, Ford Rd , Coomera behind Dreamworld on the banks of the Coomera River. This beautiful location is now the home to upmarket riverfront residences . There were 8 races during the day commencing at 12 noon and included Pony races , Horse races and Quarter horse races. The only stipulation was that they be grass fed. The Nerang Active Riders association were instrumental in making all of the arrangements pertaining to the racing, including stewards to pontificate on any protests lodged. Eight bookmakers were seconded and they loudly yelled the odds available as was the tradition in country meetings of old. As the day progressed those in the know fleeced most of them dry. The spectacle was electric with extreme close up viewing with only a rope outline of the course. Whips were cracking , hooves were thundering and loud shouting emanated from the amateur riders as the jockeyed for positions and urged their mounts on.

The day was pitched to families with Pony rides for the kids, a Merry go round, jumping castles and face painting. The Big kids had a Bar and gambling of every kind including Two up, Roulette, Black Jack and a spinning wheel. Food was supplied by Rotaractors and included a Sausage sizzle, Hamburgers, sandwiches, sausage rolls and country meat Pies from Yatala. Homemade cakes and biscuits were made and sold by our Rotaryannes as they were called in those days.

Permits were few as this was an era of little government interference in matters of Insurance, Liquor licences and food handling. Alcohol breath testing was not available and alcohol blood testing only occurred if a driver could not walk a straight line or was slurring their speech. We visited the local one and only Constable controlling the large area between Gold Coast and Beenleigh and because it was for Rotary he gave us his word the he would turn a blind eye to any misdemeanours perpetrated. We in return offered him complementary alcohol on the day of which he took full advantage and was last seen driving off in the dark in his Police Vehicle wandering all over the place. An entrance fee was collected at the gate, each horse paid a nomination fee, Bookmakers paid an attendance fee and Rotaractors paid a percentage to the Rotary Club. Lots of money was made on the Gambling and the very successful bar continuing well into the night. Everyone it seemed has a fabulous day out and enabled us to support many Charities.

Rotary.org wins Webby People's Voice Award

The people have spoken. With a majority of internet user votes, Rotary.org won the prestigious Webby People’s Voice Award for best association website. The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences announced the winners on 24 April.

Rotary International's revamped website has been chosen by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences as one of the best association websites in the world.

This year, internet users cast over 3 million votes worldwide. And with over 13,000 entries from nearly all 50 U.S. states and more than 70 countries, this year’s contest is the biggest Webby Awards ever. Winners will be recognized at the Webby Awards’ 22nd annual ceremony 14 May in New York, New York, USA.

The Webby Awards are the leading international honor for excellence on the internet. Rotary was one of five websites nominated in the best association category. The other nominees were the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance, 11th Macau Design Biennial, Trade Works for Us, and the Center for Court Innovation.

Rotary was also nominated for a Webby Award whose winner is chosen by the academy. That award went to the Macau Design Biennial.

Rotary Club of Hope Island Club to Meet at Hub

With the purpose of learning more about our scooter project, Hope Island club will hold its regular Wednesday morning breakfast meeting at The Hub on Wednesday 30 May at 6.45am for 7.00am. John Monks will be speaking on the scooter project and all members are welcome to attend. Cost will be around $15 and presents an excellent opportunity for some fellowship with another Gold Coast club.

To ensure The Hub is in prime condition a working bee will be held commencing at 9.30am on Tuesday 29 May.

Please advise John Monks if you are able to assist at the working bee and also if you wish to attend Hope Island breakfast meeting.

Update on Polio Eradication

Since our last update at end of March, no new cases have been reported and this remains the case as at 8 May.

A national immunization days (SNID) campaign in Afghanistan which was conducted on 12-16 March targeted 9.4 million children under the age of 5 years with Oral Polio Vaccine in 358 districts of 31 provinces. Vitamin A was also given to children aged 6-59 months. This massive action following the recent spike in new cases will hopefully get Afghanistan back on track towards becoming "Polio Free"

Sergeant David O'Dwyer opened the meeting and introduced President Alain who welcomed all in attendance and particularly visiting Rotarian Rob Powell from Milton Uladulla in NSW and Honorary Member Uwe.

Les Bulluss proposed the toast for the evening to The Rotary Foundation. Les had obviously done some research detailing some significant facts about "our charity".

President Alain invited Rob Powell to speak about Milton Uladulla Rotary Club and he very eloquently covered a little history of the club and its current activities.

Sergeant David conducted the fines session, Neil J won Heads & Tails and Les Bulluss won the raffle.

President Alain then chaired the Club Assembly with the main topics being:

Harold Busch updated members on the sensory gardens project at Cedar House & Rosemary House.

The project has expanded with Bunnings and Ashmore Mens' Shed joining Broadbeach Rotary Club in the project with each having responsibility for specific aspects - Ashmore Mens' Shed are taking care of all carpentry such as benches, bridges, screens, etc.; Bunnings are supplying all plants, pots, fertilizers, etc.; and Broadbeach pathways, sun shade sails, outdoor furniture, etc.

A working bee was held at Cedar House yesterday and further sessions will be held over the next few week so opportunity remains for all members to get involved in this very worthwhile local community project.

President Elect Pauline requested all members to give some thought to possible projects and activities for the upcoming Rotary Year and will welcome any ideas and suggestions from all.

Membership is of course an issue and any suggestions on attracting new and especially younger members will be most welcome.

Nigel gave a brief outline of a fund raising activity he has experience with in Tasmania and the Redlands Area of Brisbane and he is to provide a detailed outline at a future meeting for consideration of the members and board.

Youth Director Noel reported on efforts to increase interaction and continuity in schools we interact with in an endevour to boost our nominees for all youth programs in the years ahead.

Administration Director Bob Jordan spoke of the concern that numbers available to support our various fund raising projects continues to decline increasing pressure on the willing minority of members. As we go into the new year we need to consider our funding needs and the activities we should focus upon - perhaps increase carousel involvement but reduce Friday sizzles.

The prospect of having other groups provide workforce for the sizzles under Rotarian supervision was suggested as one possible way to ease the problem. All food for thought.

Finally, John Monks touched on some scooter and hub action items.
