Presidents Report 1/10/19.
We had quite a large turnout to hear Guest speaker Murray Garde talk about Vanuatu and to welcome Brian’s induction into Broadbeach Rotary Club. Welcome to Fay Atkins, Ros Byrne, Bev Crowe, visiting Rotarians, Adrian Crowe, Franz Huber, John Chiro and Greg Bowler and to Honorary Rotarians, Uwe and Ian. Murray Garde is an anthropologist and linguist who discussed his role over the last twenty years of working to form a written language to assist indigenous Ni Vanuatans learn in their first language. There are around 80 inhabited islands with over 100 different languages, so the linguistic task is enormous. We will be visiting Pentecost Island next week which has a population of approximately 44,000 and has at least 5 indigenous languages [as well as a mix of English, French and Bislama] to assess the logistics of our combined International Rotary project. Last week I made contact with Dr Don Pichford, the Director of Orthopaedics at the Gold Coast University Hospital who wishes to donate orthopaedic appliances such as crutches and orthopaedic boots to our project. Des La Rance assures us that there will be adequate space in the ‘flat pack’ container to ship these items. DG Harry’s district fund to assist those affected by the drought and bush fire regions of QLD and northern NSW has reached approximately $15,800 . He personally thanks the BBRC for our contribution to this fund. Don’t forget the Charity Race day organised by Surfers RC for the 12th October. [see Jim Hawkins] Also the 24th is World Polio eradication day. The board will be looking at a fund raising function for this day. I will be in Vanuatu and Pentecost next week, so Neil Baldwin will be filling in for me. Phia Damsma from Sonokids Foundation will be Guest speaker next week. Sonokids is an international program founded 15 years ago to assist children who are blind or have visual impairment. I believe Phia is an exciting and interesting speaker so please give her your support. I would like to remind all Rotarians that final decisions about Club functions should be arbitrated by the Board and that all decisions should be governed by the Four Way Test.
The next Board meeting is the 15th October.

This week I’m providing a reminder regarding Rotary Insurance ‘Fit to Travel’ documentation.

Rotary Insurance - Journey definition - 'Fit to Travel' document requirement.
Please note very carefully

Our insurer AON advises that a Rotary trip over 50 kms from home is a “journey” as defined in our policy and a 'Fit to Travel' document should be retained.

They advise that a 'Fit for Travel' document is a letter obtained prior to travel from your own doctor, which needs to be retained by you for later reference, if required.  Note that travelling for a meeting, airport pick up etc, is outside the scope of a 'Fit to Travel' document.


The insurers have provided the following:

            “AON need make sure that you are fit to travel for the activities ... undertaking on their Rotary trip i.e. 8 day fishing trip on Fraser Island camping, trekking in Nepal (which we do get believe it or not…)

            But let’s use common sense here….

            If travel is for a general meeting, obviously this is not a high risk activity so no, a 'Fit to Travel' is not required for travel to a meeting.

                                    Harold Busch……………..Anecdote 1/10/19.
 
Area 3 of the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotary has traditionally held it’s annual general meeting in an Asian country.
This year was not different when 10 of us from the IYFR Gold Coast Fleet travelled to Honk Kong for the annual meeting in September. There was a lot of indecision in relation to the safety of travel by the meeting organisers and in fact the meeting was postponed until November. That however did not stop 5 couples traveling because of committed accommodation and flight arrangements. Our trip now became one of fun and fellowship with no scheduled annual general meeting.
Hong Kong is well known for it’s uniqueness. A fabulous city to visit for many and various reasons. Personally I first visited Hong Kong in 1958 and have revisited approx. 8 times since. Naturally I have seen many changes over those 61  years but have always been fascinated by the people of Hong Kong, the trading atmosphere of the place and the attractions for tourists.
Democracy is something we take for granted in Australia without fear or favour. We have all been witness through TV news of the demonstrations in Hong Kong by the people to retain their independent democracy from mainland China.
Well not only did we witness the demonstration first hand but I accidentally became a participant in the demo.
Helen and I had been out to dinner and walking back to our hotel this wave of noise followed. On arrival at our hotel we found the place in lockdown. Completely blacked out with all main entrances locked and no admission. A security guard advised if we walked around the block to the rear entrance of the hotel we would be admitted following identification. With a gammy leg I had walked about as far I could that day and decided to sit it out until the hotel re opened the main entrance.
It was quite lonely for about 5  minutes with the street cleared of most pedestrians when approx. 2000 demonstrations joined me outside the hotel.
They were all chanting something I did not understand, the oldest demonstrator was about the age of my youngest son , and most were young enough to be my grandchildren. Many of them we would be proud to host as a Rotary exchange students and overall they were totally harmless but determined to get a message across re democracy.
About 6 token arrests took place where I was, but generally these are a bunch of young people with a focus.
 We should wish them well. They have little hope of winning an argument against the Chinese govt but good luck to them.
Our IYFR group went on to have a fabulous time in Hong Kong visiting a number of islands off the mainland, being hosted on a couple of occasions at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht club, cruising the beautiful harbour and of course the girls enjoyed the shopping.

At Easter 2020 our Sister Club Tauranga will celebrate its 75th anniversary and is inviting members of Sister Clubs Broadbeach & Kasaoka to join them for this special occasion.
A program of events is being arranged and more details will be advised. Home hosting will be available for Broadbeach members & partners but if you prefer to arrange hotel accommodation this should be done as soon as possible as Easter is a very busy time in Tauranga.
We will look at organising some additional touring either side of the Tauranga visit - possibly self drive people movers/small bus depending upon numbers.  If you are interested in joining in the visit to Tauranga please let Neil Jones know.  A meeting of interested members will be convened in November.
 
Polio and Clean Water
The recent cases of Polio in the Philippines are a reminder that Polio happens with limited immunization coverage and inadequate sanitation and hygiene.
The WASRAG World Polio Competition is being held to encourage clubs and districts to emphasize the importance of clean water in your local community.
The competition will recognize two projects. The one that is the Most Impactful and the one that is Most Innovative in regards to improving the quality of water and/or awareness in your community. For more details go to World Polio Day Competition.
 
Hawaiian Beer Party Benefits WASRAG
The Rotarian Fellowship, Beers Rotarians Enjoy Worldwide (B.R.E.W.) has donated thousands of dollars to WASRAG over the past few years, by holding an event during the RI Convention. This year on June 7, 2020 they have rented the entire Honolulu Beerworks. Those attending the Hawaiian Beer Luau will enjoy a beer inspired meal and taste beers brewed fresh onsite.

FROM OUR LAST MEETING Tue 1 Oct  2019

Sgt.   Uwe  called for silence and commenced the meeting by asking Peter Diamond to propose the toast. Peter spoke of the admiration he had for all those volunteers who got out of bed at 4 or 5 am to feed the tradies at Bunning’s sausage sizzle.
President Graham welcomed Russ Hutchison back to the meeting after his stint in hospital also welcomed guests from Gold Coast Rotary club, Surfers Rotary club and Surfers central rotary club as well as Roz Byrne and Brian Pearson and partner Faye as well as Guest Speaker Murray Garde. Graham mentioned the Friendship Rotary Exchange in Arizona and Pennsylvania lasting two weeks in 2020. Our president also mentioned the four to visit Pentecost Island to prepare the logistics for the proposed building to house X-Ray and Pathology facilities for the hospital on that Island. Brian Pearson was enthusiastically inducted back into the Rotary Club of Broadbeach. Bill Rex commented Boomerang Brian has landed back. Brian a prolific worker for charity mentioned he was working on a day for Polio Plus in the near future.
Sgt Uwe  enjoyed his session and extracted with dexterity all of our small change like a modern Robin Hood.
We all got fined for supporting the various football codes as well those from Victoria for having snared all the main sporting events located there. Camberians for having legal brothels and the Germans for been so stupid ,were other fines?
The raffle was won by Alain Charles on the seventh attempt . Heads and Tails was won by Denis O’Brien.
Guest Speaker Murray Garde a linguist and Anthropologist and previous Rotarian was introduced by President Graham. Murray has worked extensively in Vanuatu and more specifically on Pentecost Island . There has been a recalibration of interest in the South Pacific Nations by other surrounding countries including Australia since the rise of China as a world power and its recent push into this area. Vanuatu is an Archipelago  with a population of 291,000 largely Melanesian people. Like many developing countries is a largely young population with a high death rate and poor literacy. Murray largely works mostly in the south of Pentecost Island where the young people as a right of initiation jump off high man made scaffolding structures with expandable vines tied around their ankles and aim to land with their shoulders touching the earth’s surface.
Many come to grief and require medical assistance which is very rudimentary including the absence of X-Ray . This practise of  jumping off structures on  Pentecost Island inspired AJ Hackett to initiate Bungee Jumping in NZ and its spread through the world. Many cruise ships in April/May anchor here to enable guests to witness this spectacle. Murray showed a slide of a typical village on the east coast of South Pentecost Island with lovely beaches which would entice many a Rotarian to want to experience these pristine virtually untouched beautiful places.
All of the villages are associated with different religious orders and  either English or French language. However these are only used for official functions .The language used amongst the local people is their traditional language. Religion plays a big role with these people and they care about each other and for their  community. They have no desire to become a modern society but are content to build shelter from the trees around them and feed their families from the land and the oceans. Murray  aims to teach young children to learn to write and read in their own language and then to progress to other languages such as English or French. Multilingualism is the norm in Vanuatu as in most nations . Australia as a mono linguistic nation is the exception. Murray mentioned when Rotary goes in to help in an area they need to understand the Politics and to keep everyone informed not necessarily just one chieftain. Agriculture and Tourism are the main source of income.
After a few questions Graham thanked Murray for his most interesting and topical talk .

I used to work with a man nicknamed “Blister” - he only ever appeared after the hard work was done.

I lived in the bush for a number of years and there were a lot of nicknames. Two of my favourites:
One bloke I knew was called Aspro because he was a slow working dope.
The other one was called have-a-chat, for obvious reasons.

In a trial, a small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand.
He approached her and asked, "Mrs Jones, do you know me?" She responded, "Why, yes, I do know you, Mr Williams. I've known you since you were a boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realise you'll never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you."
The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, "Mrs Jones, do you know the defence attorney?"
She again replied, "Why, yes, I do. I've known Mr Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy, bigotted, and he has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal relationship with anyone, and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women - one of whom was your wife. Yes, I know him."
The defence attorney nearly died.
The judge asked both counsellors to approach the bench and, in a a very quiet voice, said, "If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I'll send you both to jail!"

Eleven people were hanging on a rope under a helicopter--ten men and one woman. The rope was not strong enough to carry them all, so they decided that one had to leave, because otherwise they were all going to fall. They weren't able to name that person, until the woman gave a very touching speech.

She said that she would voluntarily let go of the rope, because, as a woman, she was used to giving up everything for her husband and kids, or for men in general, and was used to always making sacrifices with little in return.

As soon as she finished her speech, all the men started clapping their hands

letters to people accused of crimes, informing them when
a court date is scheduled. One such notice was returned,
clearly by a criminal mastermind, with this jotted on the
