Dear fellow Rotarians
 
We welcomed our District Governor, Terry and his wife Carol to our meeting this week. The DG outlined the initiaves proposed by the RI President, Barry Raffin. Terry spoke on the drought and climate control and it is a sobering thought that the RI President’s home in the Bahamas will be under water in 60 years if the ocean levels continue to rise. Terry outlined the drought relief fund which is being run by the Rotary club of Sydney. Each club, however, is able to determine how they disburse any funds for the relief effort.
Carol then outlined her project which is for the Human Brain Research Project. This will focus on research into Parkinson’s and dementia and our club donated $500 to assist her in her fundraising efforts.
Terry also spoke on the Group Cultural Exchange which is going to the Philippines this year. The emphasis in now more on vocations and members were urged to promote this in the community as application numbers are dropping.  The funding model has changed and after this year leaders and team members will be required to pay their own airfare.
We were all invited to the conference next year to be held in Lismore on 31/3 which is the second year anniversary of the catastrophic floods. There are some wonderful guest speakers already locked in so I hope many of you consider joining me.
John Monks confirmed that the agreement with Hope Island club to take 5 scooters has now been signed so he will arrange for the scooters to be transferred. Thanks to everyone who assisted with this endeavour.
A reminder to all Board members that there is a meeting next week.

ALMONER REPORT - Bob Jordan
Keith Hawton was admitted to Pindarra Hospital during the week with a blood infection and will be there until Monday at the earliest. Talking to Lorraine Friday morning again she advised he is in  good  spirits and would welcome visitors when he is out of Pindarra. I will keep in touch with her.

Toss a coin——a great way to win a  deal!! ——In times gone by.
 
Dealing in older used cars in the 50`s &  60`s was often a laugh —  A " back yard guy” used to take the very old “Klunker” used cars from the Dealership.but there was an old “klunker" that he was not inclined to take from us.
We stood in the New Car Showroom — arguing a deal.   The car was on offer to him for 5 quid. He would not budge. Look — "flip a coin—your call—5  quid, or its a gift!”
He tossed the coin — “called" — the coin fell straight through  the drain in the floor!  The Vauxhall was his — he drove it away leaving behind a trail of blue smoke — For Free!    
Written off the books by Charging to  “Advertising!"
 
As a Newsagent in Canberra City, we used to deal in remainder stocks, of all sorts. books, toys, bulk purchases of  air fix/toll toys remainder stocks from wholesalers, Sydney auction houses, etc.
The regional office of “Parker Pens’, was in Sydney.   I called by at morning tea time — they offered the remainder stocks of a thick barreled —  matte black pen that was unpopular.   The pens used a regular Parker re-fill that retailed for 85 cents.
The bulk buy was for 5,200 pens. We commenced to haggle over price.  35 cents ---37 cents---struck the deal.   Good—“O”.
“But “, wait on — these are gifts — their  boxes have to be  included. “  NO ----  Not at that PRICE!”    Hell, an opportunity lost.    Boxes at 25 cents extra.   [Still a hell of a deal!!”]
Thought Bulb-- I`ll toss you —37 Cents including boxes — OR — its  off.
Tossed the coin — I won  [this time !!]     
So, everyone in Canberra City had Parker pens as gifts — retail priced at 2 pens including boxes for $1.99 from Cowen`s News. Not bad gross profit!!   
Our Banker bought several!!   They all quickly  sold — Probably too cheaply!!       Unfortunately I did not keep one, as a memento! 
 
These were the days of honest  “Dealing.”    Just a hand shake and it was a commitment!

Be the Inspiration in 2018-19
 
During the 2018-19 Rotary year, RI President Barry Rassin wants us to Be the Inspiration for positive change, inspiring our clubs, our communities, and our organization to face today’s challenges with courage, optimism, and creativity.

To achieve all that Rotary can, Rassin encourages Rotarians to think differently about their role in Rotary and Rotary’s role in the world. He asks us to put more emphasis on our public image and, in doing so, build our membership and attract partners so we can “scale up our service.” And he wants us to focus on larger projects that have a lasting impact on communities.

Sgt Kevin opened the meeting and welcome President Pauline who welcomed everyone present including District Governor Terry Brown and his wife Carol, new members PDG Trevor Taylor and his wife Robin, Noel Phingsthorne and his wife Anne, Honorary members Ian Cowen and Uwe Seifert as well as Past member Herman Rogers .
Ray Milton proposed a toast to the Scooter recipients for their resilience.
Dinner was served followed by reports from the following Directors and Members:

John called upon Tony Lewis and President Pauline to complete the formalities of the hand over of scooters to the Hope Island club.

Bob spoke about last Saturday’s sizzle which started at 7.30 am and finished around 5.30 pm. The takings for the day was a fantastic $2,200which was acknowledge by all present. There were also about $700 in donations. Totaling $2900. Bob thanked all who attended including Edwina Hutchison who ended up working.

Pauline  acknowledge the efforts of the sizzle. President Pauline invited PDG Trevor Taylor and Noel Phingsthorne to be inducted as new members of the Rotary Club of Broadbeach. Pauline also presented Anne and Robin with their Partner’s badge.
 
President Pauline then introduced DG Terry Brown. Terry has been a member of Rotary since 1989 currently a member of Lismore. He has been married to Carol for 40 years. They have 4 children and 9 grandchildren. Terry was born in a small NSW town called Bingra. He commenced an Irrigation and water business in 1980 after working for the largest irrigation company in Australia.
DG Terry addressed the club by welcoming new inductees and partners to such a vibrant club. He also spoke about the new Rotary International logo or theme from RI President Barry Rassin. The logo represent the crest of a rising wave. Barry Rassin is from an island in the Bahamas and seems to be infatuated by and gets his inspiration from the sea and the waves crashing on his island. The sun behind the logo represents the diversity of Rotary. He imagines the sea to be a connection to the world. Terry mentioned that Rotary in the last 15 years inducted 2 million members sadly as well Rotary lost 2 million members. His goal is to see the emergence of 5-6 satellite clubs in the district. He sees this as a way to grow Rotary in the district. There are 3 on the go at the moment. He urges clubs to attend the new membership protection seminar at the Quality hotel on the 4th of November.
Terry also spoke about The Rotary Foundation mentioning that there were an additional 22 cases of Polio last year. Contributions to the Foundation last year 2017-2018 were down $30 million. He encourages Clubs to consider supporting the Foundation, to have a goal and we are aming for $1500 for Polio. His goal was $40US per capita. He also spoke about the Districts’ involvement in the drought.
Pauline invited Carol Brown to speak about her Partner's project which supports patients affected by Pakinsons’ and Dementia. She explained that her hobby is woodwork. She brought along 2 wooden horses one of which was spray painted white by a friend and a timber horse which she built. She will be raffling both of them and is asking clubs in the district for their support. She also made some 2Up sets for GSE applicants in order to assist them with their fund raising. She also donated to our club a 2Up set. The club made a donation of $500 towards Carol’s project.
 
President Pauline thanked DG Terry and Carol as well as the new inductees and their partners. She also thanked all  the members and visitors for attending as well as acknowledging John Monks’ efforts in persevering to bring Hope Island on board with the scooter project and the meeting was closed.at 8 pm.

Joe passed away. His will provided $30,000 for an elaborate funeral. As the last guests departed the affair, his wife, Helen, turned to her oldest friend, Jodi. “Well, I’m sure Joe would be pleased,” she said.“I’m sure you’re right,” replied Jody, who lowered her voice and leaned in close. “How much did this really cost?”
“All of it?” said Helen. “Thirty thousand.”
“No!” Jody exclaimed. “I mean, it was very nice, but $30,000?”
Helen answered, “The funeral was $6,500. I donated $500 to the church. The wake, food and drinks were another $500. The rest went for the memorial stone.”
Jody computed quickly. “$22,500 for a memorial stone? My God, how big is it?!”
“Two and a half carats.”
