Sergeant Les got things underway with a humorous introduction centred upon the Academy Awards and which had all presnt in stitches.
President Alain welcomed guests including Past District Governor David Louden (Frankston North Club, D9820), Language student Takak0 Fuji from Kasaoka, Peter & Lesley Buda (Guests of John Curr), Honorary members Uwe & Kirstin and partners Pat Curr, Desley Daviess, Haidee Diez, Pam Hawkins, Kay Hodges, Christine Jones, Denise Jordan, Kathy Lewis and Roslyn Tomlinson.
Jim Hawkins proposed the toast to the Founders of Broadbeach Rotary Club.
Caterers Chris & Lyn provided a very tasty chicken dinner with vegetables followed by apple pie and ice cream.
PDG David Louden gave us a short overview of District 9820 Victoria and particularly his club Frankston North. David is a long term friend of Tony Lewis - the two of them working together at RACV for many years.
Past President Bruce presented Tony Lewis with his PHF+2 pin earned last Rotary year.
Takako thanked the Club and particularly Noel & Kay for hosting her while attending english language studies at Bond University. Takako also made a presentation to President Alain.
Honorary Member Kirstin Yelland updated all present of recent health issues and apologised for not being able to join us over recent times. Kirstin had a hole in her palette about the size of a 10 cent piece and gave us a humorous account of breathing and speaking difficulties encountered during the corrective/recovery process.
Neil advised members that The Malaria Vaccine Project had secured its first major corporate donor - Kenton Campbell (Zarraffas) who has contributed an initial $35,000 which takes the total of funds raised to date to more than $200,000. Having reached this milestone the next stage of clinical trials will now be able to commence.
The evening concluded with each table reciting a poem/ditty they had composed during the evening on the current Rotary theme "Rotary Making a Difference.
Noel recited a bush ballad on the Dunny Outback" and John an Irish tale he learnt as a child. Neil J & Bruce recited rhymes created at their respective tables.
At Broadbeach Rotary we are a team
and as a group we have a dream
that the work we do has world significance
and as with Rotary we make a difference
and
There was a young man called Riseley
who said to make a difference, Rotarians don't be miserly
He went to Toronto and said this has to be fixed pronto
to rid the world of Malaria should be done wisely
A very enjoyable evening shared by all 35 present.
