Fellow Rotarians and Friends,

What a wonderful night last Tuesday at the Hub..  It was great to have 41 people along to hear from former Cr Dawn Crichlow OAM.  Especially lovely to welcome Maria Padilla who will be inducted as a member in the coming weeks, Nina Sarmiento from the Ashmore Club, Honorary member Kevin O’Brien and all the partners of Rotarians.  Dawn held court with anecdotes of her time on council and life experience generally.  A rollicking yarn and vignettes of Gold Coast history and personalities.

As I’m sure all are aware, Dawn moved or eased the red tape mountain to assist the club in the Hub construction, a building that is the envy of many and serves the Rotary Club of Broadbeach well.  Thank you to those who assisted in the clean-up and especially to Noel Hodges who water blasted the driveway debris at least three block south.

The sizzle last Saturday saw us clear around $1000 in profits.  As long as the weather holds up on 20 February, we should have a repeat performance.

On Monday 8th, I am attending the Cluster 7 Presidents Zoom meeting.  To be discussed is the plans for the 100 years of Rotary Baton Relay.  It is the feeling of the presidents that a larger scale Cluster celebration should be held, with clubs to mark the occasion as they see fit.  I ma seeking a volunteer to manage that aspect on behalf of the club.  Please let me know as per my email via ClubRunner if you can assist.  A suggestion so far from the Cluster is a beach or park event.  The actual baton will be in our Cluster to be shared amongst the clubs from 11 to 29 April.

I’ve been advised that President David (Dave) Harmon of the Rotary Club of Ballina-on-Richmond who is now officially declared as District Governor Nominee of D9640 for Rotary year 2023-2024.  Congratulations to Dave.

Next week we are to hear from former Premier Rob Borbidge AO, the former Premier of Queensland and Honorary Member, regarding the activities of Life flight.  I look forward to seeing you there.

Yours in Rotary

Les

SECRETARY REPORT - Neil Baldwin
Summary of Update from District Governor Andy for the information of members.

We have another new Rotary Club in our district. Evans Head Rotary Club in NSW was chartered by RI on Friday with 22 new members. This is the 4th club to charter this Rotary year.

Thank you so much in helping our district grow to the 1301 membership mark today, to record a net growth of 10% and +124 members with 57 clubs. 36% of our members are female and 9% are under '40. You are the backbone of our district.

We are now the 50th largest district in the world with a high percentage of female members and the No 1 in Zone 8. Women were admitted to Rotary only 32 years ago on 25th Jan 1989! We have done well in D9640 to attract ladies to Rotary.

Since 1st July 2020, our clubs have contributed  AU$270,000 to The Rotary Foundation. But 28 clubs have still not made a contribution to our Foundation. Please consider making a small contribution in February to celebrate Rotary's founding day of 23rd Feb 1905. The exchange rate is in Australia's favor.

We attracted 209 new members to our clubs in the last 215 days since 1st July.  90 of them were to the 4 new clubs we chartered. Our efforts to retain members in existing clubs need more attention from each one of us. 53 existing clubs lost 98 members in 7 months? 63 of them were in Rotary for less than 2 years!

We start our Rotary Australia 100 years celebration Baton Relay on 5th February from Grafton in NSW and Goondiwindi in QLD.
Our one-day District Conference is on Saturday 15 May at Twin Towns in Tweed Heads NSW. Registrations will open in February. My DG's Newsletter of February will have more details.

Environment added to our area of focus policy statements
We are moving forward on Rotary’s new area of focus! You can now find more information about how we’ll protect the environment in the updated Areas of Focus Policy Statements. Clubs and districts can apply for global grants in this area beginning 1 July. If you want to apply for a global grant, review the policy statements carefully to make sure that the activities you propose are eligible for funding.

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon.
