President’s Report     03/12/2019.

I will keep my report ‘short and sharp’ and leave it to our scribe to detail the evening’s happenings. Thanks to Tony Lewis for his excellent job of chairing the AGM and to Secretary Les, for his excellent preparation of the agenda. We had a great evening of fellowship with an entertaining Guest Speaker, the Nostradamus of the 21st Century, Prof. Bela Stantic It was a very pleasant surprise to learn that our own Griffith University is the world leader in ‘big data analysis’. Our present Rotary year is almost half way complete and before the end of the calendar year I would like to present my hopes and aspirations for the remainder of my year as your President. Look forward to seeing you next Tuesday evening and to welcoming our Guest speaker from Ashmore Scout Group. Yours in Rotary Service,

Membership types.
Please circulate to all clubs.
Until recently Rotary International allowed only two membership types, Active and Honorary.
With the introduction of new membership types an additional two have been added to the D9640 Clubrunner District and Club websites.
Members of Rotary Clubs may now have Active, Active-Satellite, or Active-Corporate membership types.
Members of Satellite Clubs can now be identified while remaining members of the host club, and Corporate members of clubs can also be easily identified.
Clubs who have members of these categories are requested to alter their membership records to better identify these two membership types.

Denis Hallworth

Fresh out of school I was employed by the Commonwealth Department of Supply - Stores and Transport Branch as a junior Supply Officer based at Cannon Hill Brisbane
We worked closely with Defence and supplied many of the items issued to the military
We also ran Disposal auctions on a very regular basis
One day we had two forklifts unloading a couple of RAAF trucks with items for the next auction sale
We had a large number of the old Eglo style storage sheds in our depot in which we stored everything
I reported to the CO whose office was beside mine and we had a hatch he would pull down to talk directly to me
He had a set of binoculars he used to keep to survey the area from our offices
One day the hatch came down and he handed me his binoculars and asked me to look at what was happening outside the disposals shed.
I looked and said that it appeared that the two forklifts unloading the truck were broken down. He got me to confirm this with Roy the Storeholder.
The CO barked we can't have men standing around doing nothing then asked me to contact our Stafford Workshops and get them to send two mechanic’s fast to fix the machines.
I called the workshops who advised they had the mechanic’s available but no transport to get them to us.The CO then instructed me to get our ute and go an pick them up.
The ute was in the city so he told me call the boss of who ran the Commonwealth Car Pool in Fortitude Valley.
He said he did not have a car available but then said hang on Herb is out giving the Rolls a run and he called Herb on the two way radio so Herb was dispatched to pick up the mechanic’s in the Rolls. We had a gatekeeper by the name of Ron.
Usually he would be in the gatehouse dressed only in overalls unless an important person was expected in which case he would change into uniform peak cap etc. Having a sense of humor I called him in the gatehouse and said the rolls is coming.
With that he ran past my office like a shot into the locker area to change into uniform I could hear the boot polish brush going flat out and fully booted and spurred he headed back out to the gatehouse to await the arrival of the Rolls.I also tipped all the stores people off as to what was happening and they were watching what was to unfold.Ultimately the Rolls came down Barrack Road and turned into the entrance of the area and pulled up at the Gate House. With that Ron appeared giving the very best salute you have ever seen and pressed the boom gate button to open it. As this happened the rear left hand window of the Rolls came down and one of the young apprentice mechanics in the back seat gave Ron the good old Australian Call signThe driver then got involved and took them for a tour of the area. People were waving hankies  and bits of rag. It was like a royal tour. The CO demanded to know what was going on when he saw the Rolls and I told him. He was not impressed but we all got a good laugh out of it.

I also survived the CO's displeasure (only just).

Jim Hawkins welcomed Prof Bela Stantic
Prof Bela explained how he has forecasted  the election of the USA and Australian all from social media posts and tweets. His team at Griffith university look at the millions of tweets and predict from all the information that people post and tweet on social media. He has also helped to prevent the  bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef and  global warming.
Maybe the younger generation need to realize that someone is always watching.
What an interesting job this gentleman has, he can even predict the Melbourne Cup winner all from tweets. They are now working on a lie detector test for social media.
A member of our club asked the Prof for tonight`s lotto numbers.

WEEKLY LAUGHS.

The brain is a wonderful organ. It starts working when you
get up in the morning, and doesn't stop until you get to
the office.
-----------------------------------------
One morning a man comes into the church on crutches. He stops
in front of the holy water and splashes some of it on both of
his legs, then throws away his crutches.

An altar boy witnessed the scene and runs into the rectory to
tell the priest what he'd just seen.

Without batting an eye, the priest says, "Son, you've just
witnessed a miracle. Tell me, where is this man?"

"Over by the holy water, Father. Flat on his back."

-----------------------------------------

Two buffalo were standing on the range when a passing tourist said, “Those are the mangiest, scroungiest, most moth-eaten, miserable beasts I have ever seen.”

One of the buffalo turned to the other and said, “You know, I think I just heard a discouraging word.”

-----------------------------------------

"I was in McDonald's and I saw this kid take his Happy Meal
toy and throw it on the ground. His mom said, 'Hey, you play
with that. There are children in China who are manufacturing
those!'" --Laura Silverman

-----------------------------------------

THINGS YOUR MUM WOULD NEVER, EVER SAY

"How on earth can you see the TV sitting so far back?"

"Yeah, I used to skip school a lot, too"

"Just leave all the lights on ... it makes the house look more cheery"

"Let me smell that shirt -- Yeah, it's good for another week"

"Go ahead and keep that stray dog, honey. I'll be glad to feed and walk him every day"

"I don't have a tissue with me ... just use your sleeve"

"Don't bother wearing a jacket - the wind-chill is bound to improve"

-----------------------------------------

When the wise company president learned that his employees
were tanking up on no-trace vodka martinis during their
lunch hours, he issued the following memo:

To all employees; If you must drink during your lunch hour,
please drink whiskey. It is better for our customers to
know you're drunk than to think you're stupid.

-----------------------------------------

Two little kids are in a hospital, lying on stretchers next to each other, outside the operating room.

The first kid leans over and asks, "What are you in here for?"

The second kid Says, "I'm in here to get my tonsils out and I'm a little nervous."

The first kid says, "You've got nothing to worry about. I had that done when I was four. They put you to sleep, and when you wake up they give you lots of Jell-O and ice cream. It's a breeze."

The second kid then asks, "What are you here for?"

The first kid says, "A circumcision."

The second kid replies, "Whoa, good luck buddy, I had that done when I was born. Couldn't walk for a year."

-----------------------------------------

A minister in a little church had been having trouble with
the collections.

One Sunday he announced, "Now, before we pass the collection
plate, I would like to request that the person who stole the
chickens from Farmer Condill's henhouse please refrain from
giving any money to the Lord. The Lord doesn't want money
from a thief!"

The collection plate was passed around, and for the first
time in months everybody gave.

-----------------------------------------

A father asked his 12-year-old son if he knew about the birds and the bees.

"I don't want to know!" the child said, bursting into tears. "Promise me you won't tell me!"

Confused, the father asked what was wrong.

The boy sobbed, "When I was six, I got the 'There's no Santa' speech. At seven, I got the 'There's no Easter Bunny' speech. When I was eight, You hit me with the 'There's no tooth fairy speech.'"

"If you're going to tell me that grown-ups don't really get laid, I'll have nothing left to live for."

-----------------------------------------

"Marriages don't last. When I meet a guy, the first question
I ask myself is: is this the man I want my children to spend
their weekends with?" --Rita Rudner

-----------------------------------------

An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house and, after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen.

The two husbands were talking, and one said, 'Last night we went out to this new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly.'

The other man said, 'What's the name of the restaurant?'
The first man thought and thought and finally said, 'What’s the name of that flower you give to someone you love?

You know, the one that's red and has thorns.'
'Do you mean a rose?'

'Yes, that's the one,' replied the man.
He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, 'Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?'

-----------------------------------------

Q: What did Buddy Holly say to his wife as he dragged himself out of the river?

A: "It's so easy to fall in, love."

Q: Why did the pony have a sore throat?

A: Because he was a little horse.

Q: What kinds of songs do planets like to sing?

A: Nep-tunes!

Q: Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off?

A: He's all right now.

Q: Did you hear about the robbery in the laundry room?

A: Two clothespins held up a pair of pants.

Q: What was the reporter doing at the ice cream shop?

A: He was getting the latest scoop.
