President's Message

Hello fellow members,
Whilst President Bruce was away looking for new members this week, a very enjoyable relaxing social evening was held at the Hub.
It was a great turn out by those members able to attend and good to see a number of partners
The Anti Ice Campaign Group who are utilising the Hub at present were well represented and Andrea gave an excellent presentation on the effects of the drug ice on individuals and the subsequent consequences  this has on the community
Andrea also outlined what the group is doing to raise awareness of this drug.
She went on and thanked our club for allowing the use of the Hub which has been of great assistance to them.
I had the pleasure of accepting a Certificate of Appreciation from her
My thanks on your behalf to all of those members who assisted in putting the evening together: Kevin O’Brien who Chaired the evening as Sargent, John Kerr and Neil Jones manned the bar and Cec McPaul who collected the money as we arrived. A great effort.
Our caterer Chris provided an excellent meal including desert once again.
This year’s Broadbeach Rotary Club’s Gold Coast Police Officer of the Year Gala Dinner is fast approaching on Tuesday the 11 October next. This promises to be an excellent evening once again with numbers looking very good at this point. Please make sure you register and make payment before the night.
Pauline will have some raffle tickets for you next week and the funds raised from the raffle will go to the Monaco Street PCYC which recently celebrated it’s 40th birthday dinner which June and I had the pleasure of attending.
What a great job Sgt Linda Baade and her team continue to do for youth in our community.
We welcome President Bruce back this week.
See you next Tuesday
Ray

PAUL HARRIS--FIRST BUT NOT FIRST

Was Paul Harris the first president of a Rotary club? No. Was Paul Harris the first president of Rotary International? Yes.

There is an easy explanation to this apparent contradiction. Although Paul Harris was the founder and organizer of the first Rotary club in Chicago in 1905, the man selected to be the first president was one of the other founding members, Silvester Schiele. By the year 1910 there were 16 Rotary clubs, which linked up as an organization called the National Association of Rotary Clubs. A couple of years later the name was changed to International Association of Rotary Clubs as Rotary was organized in Winnipeg, Canada, and then in England, Ireland and Scotland. In 1922 the name was shortened to Rotary International. When the first organization of Rotary clubs was created in 1910, Paul Harris was selected as the first president. He served in this position for two years from 1910 until 1912. Thus, the founder of the Rotary idea, who declined to be president of the first club, became the first president of the worldwide organization, Rotary International.

The Rotary Foundation Weekly

WHAT IS A ROTARY FOUNDATION BENEFACTOR?
A Rotary Foundation Benefactor is a person who has notified The Rotary Foundation that he/she has made provisions in his/her final estate plans to Rotary, or made an outright gift of US$1,000 or more, to the Rotary Foundation’s Endowment Fund. Benefactors receive a commemorative certificate, a letter of appreciation, and a royal blue and gold ribbon insignia to be attached to a Rotary or PHF pin. A US$1,000 gift to The Foundation creates a legacy of helping people live better lives around the world. We have 187 Benefactors in our District. Worldwide there are over 100,000 donors who have become Benefactors.
WON’T YOU JOIN THEM?

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 13th September 2016
(Scribe: Bill Rex)

Our Chairman and Sergeant for the evening was Russ Hutchins. Russ kept the meeting running smooth and fast and on time embellished with plenty of humor.
Our esteemed President addressed the meeting and bought to our attention exciting happens within our GC Rotary district to include the coming Surfers Paradise Rotary Club Race Meeting. Promises to be a great day. He also spoke on the negative press with regard an apparent crime wave hitting the GC. The GC was compared to Rio and Beruit. Hello!! It is just such a shame that the good our Police Force does goes unnoticed.
Our guest speaker for the evening was Well credentialed Bianca Topp who gave us a first class presentation on the facts about Organ and Tissue donation. Bianca was warmly thanked but alas no Rotary glass. This from the scribes perspective is a shame as our guests really need something to remember their night with us. Just an observation.
Pp John Monks and Peter Dimond were the  bunyips for the  evening and the raffle was won by Keith Horton and heads and tails won by Dennis O'Brien.
The Silver Circle rigged and won by Bob Jordan.
In all a great night with enjoyable fellowship.

Editor's footnote:  we are handing out Donate Life pamphlets at each of our fund raising activities this month and all members are encouraged to sign up on-line if not already registered donors as well as encouraging other friends and family to also bec ome donors.

WEEKLY LAUGHS
A woman was getting swamped with calls from strangers. A billing service had launched an 800 number that was identical to hers.
When she called to complain, she was told to get a new number. "I've had mine for twenty years," she pleaded. "Couldn't you change yours?"
The company refused, so she said, "Fine. From now on, I'm going to tell everyone who calls that their bill is paid in full."
The company got a new number the next day.

While visiting Annapolis, a lady tourist noticed several students on their hands and knees assessing the courtyard with pencils and clipboards in hand.
"What are they doing?" she asked the tour guide.
"Each year," he replied with a grin, "the upperclassmen ask the freshmen how many bricks it took to finish paving this courtyard."
When they were out of earshot of the freshmen, the curious lady asked the guide: "So, what's the answer?"
The guide replied: "One."

The rain was pouring down. And there standing in front of a big puddle outside the pub, was an old Irishman, drenched, holding a stick with a piece of string dangling in the water.A passer-by stopped and asked, "What are you doing?"
"Fishing" replied the old man....
Feeling sorry for the old man, the gent said, "Come in out of the rain and have a drink with me."
In the warmth of the pub, as they sip their whiskeys, the gentleman cannot resist asking, "So how many have you caught today?"
"You're the eighth" said the old man.

I'm not the easiest guy in the world to get along with. So when our anniversary rolled around, I wanted my wife to know how much I appreciated her tolerating me for the past 20 years. I ordered flowers and told the florist to enclose a card that read, 'Thanks for putting up with me so long.'
When my wife got the delivery, she called me at work.
"Just where do you think you going?" she asked.
"What do you mean?" I said.
She read the card aloud as the florist had written it: "Thanks for putting up with me. So long."

In California over the weekend, a woman gave birth in a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Apparently she did this in the New Releases section.
I thought you were going to say she gave birth in the C-section.
