Firstly, thank you for the honour of being the President of this wonderful Rotary Club. It’s not something I take lightly, fully aware that the reputation of Broadbeach Rotary is one of making things happen, outstanding esprit de corps and service above self. Thank you for the messages from those who couldn’t attend the Changeover and the fine company and good thoughts of those who were there.

It’s not often I’m lost for words but being awarded the Bruce Duncan Fellowship Cup was a surprise and I thank the club for that honour as well. As Noel Hodges was the returning officer, I initially suspected Russian meddling in the result, however I’m assured no inquiry is necessary.

To Past President Graham, thank you for leading the club for the past 12 months especially during the COVID-19 situation. The Pentecost Island project will change lives and exemplifies what Rotary is about, giving back and service. I look forward to seeing the project completed once travel and restrictions are eased.

Thank you to DG Andy for attending the Changeover and his wonderful response to the toast to Rotary International. To summarise, in today’s times we need to be inventive, Rotary business as we know it, in the short term at least, is not as it was in January. To thrive, we need to embrace opportunities, or as President Holger Knaack has themed, Rotary Opens Opportunities.

Our opening opportunities journey starts on Tuesday 21 July, with a Club Assembly at the Lonestar Tavern (former Quality Hotel) Hotel. Please consider attending the assembly, if you can’t, let me know any thoughts you’d like considered and I’ll relay those to the club.

Some of the things I’d like to discuss are Corporate Membership, the meeting schedules, with the hotel on the 1^st and 3^rd Tuesday of each month and on the 2^nd Tuesday, a vocational visit, social event or meet via Zoom with a guest speaker. On the 4^th Tuesday, meet at the Hub and if there is a 5^th Tuesday in a month, we can either gather somewhere informally (Broadwater BBQ etc.) or have the night off.

Thank you to Peter and Robyn for agreeing to be Social Directors. They have some great ideas and I encourage everyone to take part in the outings and events.

Whilst on the topic of the Hotel, as it has changed owners recently, we are dealing with new management and protocols. We are required to have names to them by Friday afternoon. Please ensure you register on ClubRunner by then. If you can’t access it, let me, Ray or Neil Baldwin know, and we can register you. If you don’t register and attend the meeting, it its highly likely that a meal can’t be provided.

I am contactable most times, although during work hours I may not be able to take your call. Don’t be offended, I will return your call when I am able to.

Spoke to Margaret McPaul, Cec’s wife who said that Cec is going well but won’t be at Rotary for a while as he prefers at this time to stay away from gatherings.

Ian Cowan advised Gay is out of hospital after 2 months and is now on the road to recovery.

Could not contact Russ but he must be o.k .. as he has a photo on Facebook where he is at a Southport venue eating prawn sandwiches.

Meet the 2020-21 Rotary President

Holger Knaack, a member of the Rotary Club of Herzogtum Lauenburg-Mölln, Germany, began his year as Rotary International president 1 July. Knaack is an atypical Rotary president, and not just because he wears jeans and eschews ties much of the time. He’s the organization’s first German president, and came to that position in untraditional fashion. Read a profile of Knaack in The Rotarian and visit the office of the president pages.

PP Tony Lewis recited Rotary Grace followed by the Loyal Toast presented by PP Neil Jones

Chairman Nigel then welcomed DG Andy Rajapakse, and received apologies from PP Ian Cowen, PP Russell Hutchison, Martin Ingram, Bob Jordan, Nassar and Nayer Kaviani, PP Bruce Kuhn, Cec McPaul, PP David O’Dwyer, PP Uwe Seifert

Nigel also acknowledged PP Dr Denis and Claire O’Brien, PP Col and Vilma Makin and Honorary member Kevin and Jeanette O’Brien

Graham welcomed all present and presented new member Rock O’Keefe with his membership certificate and new member Yong Chua with her membership information pack

This was followed by an interlude with a power point presentation compiled by PP Neil Jones “12 Months in 12 Minutes” which gave an excellent overview in pictures of Club activities month by month over the past year

Toast to Rotary International was presented by PP Bill Rex with a response by DG Andy Rajapakse

Toast to partners was presented by PP Harold Busch with the response by Cindy Bulluss

President Graham presented PHF’s to Kay Hodges, Robyn Brown, PP Pauline Armstrong and PP John Monks

Current holder of the Bruce Duncan Fellowship Cup, PP Noel Hodges, presented the cup to this year’s winner PE Les Bulluss

President Graham presented his yearly report highlighting our service projects (including, Robotics, Cedar and Rosemary houses, AAIC program, literacy program,) Police Officer of the year, The Scooter program and the Pentecost Island project.

Graham thanked his Board with special mention to PP Dr Denis O’Brian and Kevin O’Brien for their support and contribution to the success of the Club over many years

Graham also welcomed new members Rock O’Keefe, Yong Chua and Martin Ingram and thanked PP Jim Hawkins for his IT support especially in coordination of Zoom meetings and arranging Guest Speakers

Graham also gave a briefing regarding the Pentecost Island project and our return to (what is now called) the Mermaid Beach Hotel this month

President Les presented PP Graham with his past President certificate and dinner badge. President Les then introduced hid Board and presented them with their Rotary Theme badges for the 2020 – 2021 year

In his Presidents address, Les thanked DG Andy for his attendance and thanked past member and PP Col Makin for introducing him to the meaning of Rotary

Les acknowledged that this will be a challenging year especially regarding financial issues and fundraising
