Man of the Match this week would have to go to the intrepid Neil Jones, Sergeant, Treasurer and Guest Speaker (partner), all rolled into one. Lucky Tony was there for photo's for you. Everybody else appeared nice and relaxed, or perhaps it's just that Neil, being busier than a three legged dog trying to bury a bone in the bitumen, made everybody else appear relaxed? Thanks Neil, great job.

A couple of important issues to be decided this week. After a year of toil in keeping the bookshop going, Jim needs to move on and if no one else takes over the role, the end of the shop is nigh. Our AAIC friends, who are still doing great work in the community, are desperately seeking alternative arrangements to no avail at this time. Depending on any solution, we may be asked if any leeway can be given to a 'short' extension, 'if required', which will be determined at the Board meeting next week. Member participation in the decision making process of these two issues would be very welcome.

Great to see special guest Ted Baldwin (Neil's dad) at our meeting, maybe we need to have a 'family' meeting / get together soon.

MEMBER PROFILE

Kevin O'Brien

Born in 1951, my early childhood was in Stones Corner, Camp Hill, and Holland Park in Brisbane. At the end of 1966 the family moved to the Gold Coast and I completed my last three years of high school at Aquinas College at Southport. Aquinas was only a couple of years old and seemed so much fresher than the long established St Laurance that I had attended in Brisbane.

Upon leaving school I had visions of Clancy of the overflow and became a jackeroo. At first on a cattle and sheep station at Talwood near Goondiwindi but that wasn’t big enough or far enough out back so I went to Brunette station on the Barkley Tableland in the Northern Territory. The owners an American company who were instrumental in introducing the Santa Gertrud’s Cattle to Australia and I worked with their stud stock. My next change was to work for CSIRO Tropical Pastures Division on an experimental farm near Mundubbera in the North Burnett district of Queensland. I worked for scientist who established plots of different imported grasses to evaluate their worth as a species for improving pastures.

I enjoyed the social life in the small town of Mundubbera. It was there that I met Jeanette and we were married in 1975. Three years later our daughter Heidi was born.

In 1976 we moved to the Gold Coast and I tried my hand at Real Estate working for my father at Oasis Realty at Broadbeach. I did a two year course at the TAFE College in Real Estate Practices and became fully licensed and a partner in Oasis Realty. During this time I came in contact with Ray Milton who the same as me was in partnership with his father in Real Estate. Ray got me involved with the Gold Coast Branch of the REIQ. I was a board member and then in 1987 was the president of the local branch. After selling the freehold where my office stood I spent the next 7 years working for various offices on the Gold Coast.

In 1995 when real estate was in one of its cyclic downturns I decided it was time to try something different in life. I bought a wholesale nut and confectionery business and ran that for 12 years.

Deciding it was time for another change I went into the renovating game. I bought and renovated properties and sold them for profit and did the work on a further four other properties owned by others. All this time I kept my real estate licence and managed commercial and some residential properties.

Now at 65 I am technicaly retired but find I am too mentally and physical active to truly retire so one day there might be another work chapter to this story.

I joined the Broadbeach Rotary in the 1986 and have always enjoyed the fellowship of the club.

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTIONS

Each May or June, Rotary International holds a worldwide convention "to stimulate, inspire and inform all Rotarians at an international level." The convention, which may not be held in the same country for more than two consecutive years, is the annual meeting to conduct the business of the association. The planning process usually begins about four or five years in advance. Future R.I. conventions are scheduled for Melbourne, Australia in 1993, Taipei, Taiwan, in 1994, Nice, France, in 1995, and Calgary, Canada, in 1996. The R.I. Board determines a general location and invites cities to make proposals. The conventions are truly international events which 15,000 to 20,000 Rotarians and guests attend. All members should plan to participate in a Rotary International convention to discover the real internationality of Rotary. It is an experience you'll never forget.

This year's convention which will celebrate the centenary of The Rotary Foundation will be held in Atlanta, Georgia from 11-14 June. For full details go to www.rotary.org

VISIT TO SISTER CLUB KASAOKA JAPAN 1/2 APRIL 2017

Travel plans are well advanced for our Japan tour (30 March to 11 April) to incorporate a visit to Kasaoka to join our Sister Club's 75th anniversary celebrations.

The travel group of twelve are currently making flight bookings to and from Japan but it is not too late to join the group. Anyone interested should contact President Bruce as soon as possible.

Rotary “Raising the Spirits” Trip to Charleville, March 24-31
District 9640 will be undertaking a second “Raising the Spirits” trip in conjunction with Outback Links to Charleville in March. The planned return to Charleville is to assist
those drought-affected families that we were unable to assist in September because of floods.

The Rotary Foundation Weekly

This year we are celebrating 100 years of our Rotary Foundation doing good in the world.

Our Sister Club global grant to provide ophthalmology equipment for the Marine Reach Vessel MV Pacific Hope is a wonderful example of our Rotary Foundation "Doing Good in the World". Our club contribution of US$3,000 to the project was matched with US$1,500 from The Foundation. Because of our club's significant ongoing support for TRF, our District supported the project with US$3,800 of District Designated Funds which was matched with a further US$3,800 from the Foundation World Fund. In total, The Rotary Foundation contributed US$43,890 of a total budget of US$72,490 and clearly we would not have achieved a successful project outcome without the support of "Our Charity".

A perfect example of the power of The Rotary Foundation and why we should all contribute regularly. If you haven't made a personal contribution this year, now is the time to act. Remember our goal is for 100% participation in the 100th year of TRF.

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 14 FEBRUARY 2017

Sergeant Neil opened the meeting and called Neil Baldwin to propose a toast which he did very eloquently on peace and understanding in the world and Rotary’s path in achieving that.
Sergeant Neil then welcomed visitor Neil Baldwin’s father Ted who I had the pleasure of talking to prior to the meeting and I can see where Neil gets his gentle nature from. Also a special welcome to Paul Taylor who we haven’t seen in a while.
Sergeant Neil then invited the members to welcome President Bruce which we did in the normal fashion. Bruce briefly discussed the ongoing business with the Hub and our present tenants and that this matter was going to be further discussed at the Board Meeting.
Jim Hawkins then talked about the book shop at Carrara in that the takings are down a bit due to the extreme heat which affects the patronage at the markets. He also wishes to terminate his role as Manager extraordinaire and requested any takers to fulfil his role of which he didn’t appear to be swamped with response. He requires discussion and future options of this venture.

Kevin O’Brien is organizing a bare foot bowls night on the 28th February, more on that later, and the Young Achievers nominations will be on again in a few weeks and he requested some judges for this which he achieved in Malcolm Davies and Nancy.
Sergeant Neil completely confused us by having the raffle and heads and tails first and then did his devastating session on all our finances. Bill, Ray and Nasser were the winners of the raffle and Heads and Tails.
Neil and Bill were then welcomed by President Bruce as our guest speakers and gave a very interesting account with a visual presentation of their trip to Tauranga in “Aoterora” and about all the facilities, facts and figures on the ship Pacific Hope which our club Tauranga and Kasoka are involved with.
Meeting closed at 8.00pm.
