24 October is World Polio Day!

Together, we’ve made tremendous progress. Now it’s time to intensify our fight to make polio the second human disease ever to be eradicated. Last year, the World Health Organization’s African region was certified free of wild poliovirus, showing that eradication is possible even in very difficult circumstances. The wild poliovirus remains endemic in just two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. We can use World Polio Day to advocate for the support we need to end polio in countries where it still paralyzes children. |
SURFERS PARADISE ANNUAL RACE DAY
This year the Surfers Paradise Rotary Club's Annual Charity Race Day will be supporting the Malaria Vaccine Project.
As our Club is one of the four Sponsor Clubs of the Malaria Vaccine Project it would be great if we are able to support the event and ultimately the Project.
Neil Jones as our representative on the Malaria Vaccine Project Committee will co-ordinate our effort.
We have one table booked but it would be great to fill another. Please advise Neil of your interest.
Working in the Community
Friday 24 September saw a small group of our regular BBQ workers cooking and serving bacon & egg burgers for Bunnings Trade Breakfast.
Pauline, John and Neil braved the early morning chill to be on site from 6.00am. Surplus buns, bacon and eggs were donated to the club and we in turn delivered them to the Surfers Paradise Anglican Church Drop in Centre which was most appreciative of the donation.
September is Basic Education & Literacy Month
Take a couple of minutes and seriously think about this month’s theme. What springs to mind? Do you have an image of children in “developing countries”?
But according to a report by the ABC, "Forty-seven percent of the Australian population are functionally illiterate," meaning that “they can't read the instructions on a medicine bottle, they can't read a map, they can't read a recipe." Whilst the report is dated 2012 it is unlikely that matters would have substantially improved.
We can be proud that our club has regularly supported basic education and literacy projects both nationally and internationally. This year we have again sponsored Benowa State High School to enter two teams in the National "Write a Book in a Day" program. You will recall that two years ago our sponsored team won the Queensland and National titles.
This year's teams recently completed the task and their entries make an enjoyable read - a digital copy of their entries is available on request from either Pauline or Neil. We wish both teams every success in the Queensland State competition and look forward to some team members joining us at a meeting soon.
