Fellow Rotarians & Friends,

We had two special guests last meeting – Julie Young who talked to us about guide dogs and their ongoing quest to raise money for training. She also gave us information about how the dogs are trained and the many skills they learn. We also welcomed Yalna the golden Labrador who is helping with the marketing. I am sure all dog lovers were happy to meet and greet both Julie and Yalna.

Congratulations to Russ Hutchinson who was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the three Rotary clubs involved with the Pentacost project.

The Board meeting ran out of time to discuss all the issues on the agenda with the scooter project taking up the majority of the time. Suggestions will be coming out in the Rotarlight in the near future in order ease the pressure of finding volunteers for some jobs – stay tuned. Given the financial pressures the club finds itself in, many projects have had to be sidelined.

Next week is our AGM so please come along ready to have input into the running and direction of the club. It is up to all members to participate in our activities in order for the club to be able to fund our various projects.

Tonight we are to be entertained by another presentation from Colonal Robert Likeman. His topic will explore historical aspects of Afghanistan rather than political.

Nights with Colonel Robert Likeman are always special so we have made this a partners night and members & partners from Mermaid Beach will also be joining us on this occasion.

Rotary Foundation Month, Giving Tuesday, and more!

November is Rotary Foundation Month, which brings many opportunities to show your support for the Foundation. Last year, the Foundation helped fund 2,066 global grants and 467 district grants. To keep up with demand, it’s more important than ever to celebrate our Foundation.

One way to do this is to be active on Giving Tuesday, which is 30 November. Giving Tuesday has grown into a global movement of generosity. It’s a day that empowers us to give to our communities through service, kindness, and financial support — all acts that Rotary values deeply. One easy way to celebrate Giving Tuesday is to make a gift to the Foundation’s Annual Fund-SHARE.

Another giving opportunity that begins during Foundation Month is Give the Gift of Rotary. In November and December, you’ll notice materials for this initiative being shared with members around the world. This key fundraising campaign highlights the impact a gift can have and is vital to raising funds for the grants that make Doing Good in the World possible.

Scooter Project Feedback

This note of thanks from Desley Morris, an elderly lady living in a retirement village at Coomabah, relying heavily on her mobility scooter. This donation was totally unsolicited.

Meeting Opened by Sergeant Noel introducing Harold to give the toast.

Harold referred to the 11^th November, Armistice Day and raised a toast to the ADF

Noel then introduced President Peter who welcomed our guest speaker for the night from GUIDE Dogs QLD., Julie Young as well as Edwina Hutchison

There were no members reports.

Sergeant Noel then came to the podium, his first time as Sergeant. We thought he would be different and we were not wrong.....After what can only be described as a “unique session”, he proceeded to tell the worst joke ever told. We then had heads and tails won by Bob Jordan and the raffle won by John Monks.

President Peter then introduced our guest speaker Julie Young who gave an in depth rundown of how the Guide Dog association began, its current goals and constant need for donations.

We were also given an in depth talk on the work and dedication these people put in to get a fully trained dog for individuals. The dogs only have an average “working “ life of around 8 years. It was a very informative and interesting talk enjoyed by all.

President Peter closed the meeting at around 8.10pm.
