Hello Fellow Rotarians

Last Tuesday evening  at the Quality Hotel we welcomed back our holidaying Rotarians Bob Jordan and Neil Jones. It felt like a year that you were both away. It was also great to welcome Cec back from illness.
As I mentioned last Tuesday my apologies once again for the confusion between hotel management and staff regarding the timing of meals. Bob has been in contact with the Hotel Management and has reaffirmed our schedule. They have apologised for the inconvenience and will ensure it doesn’t happen again. Great to you on board again Bob.
Unfortunately due to the lateness of the meal, the meeting was out of sync which included our guest speaker Andy Bell  who briefly informed  us about his duties as an undercover cop in the NZ Police. Andy has mentioned that he would like to visit again for the second part of his presentation. After all the meeting did conclude at 8 pm.

The final touches for the Police Officer of the Year is nearly completed. Thanks to Ray Milton, Bruce Kuhn and their team for doing a fantastic job in organising a very significant event for the Broadbeach Rotary Club. I am asking all Broadbeach Rotarians to come along to support this magnificent event, one which we are very proud to endorse. Further If you have not booked to date to please do so as it promises to be a great evening.

As mentioned in last week’s Rotarlight, our visiting Rotarians from Sister club Taraunga would like to be home hosted whilst here. So far Neil Jones, Bill Rex and myself are able to assist. There is another couple looking for accommodation Please advise if you will be able to assist. It appears at this stage that we could have 9 visitors from Tauranga.

Thanks you once again for the efforts of all members who are involved whether it be the Board members, sizzles, book shops, boot sales or POOTY, it is immensely appreciated.

See you at the POOTY!

Alain

About 7 years ago our club had a Vocational dinner meeting at a Motor home manufacturer. The late Phil Moore and i were the BBQ chefs that night, and we used their equipment.
Obviously the sausages we used were not up to current Bunnings quality, because with in a short time of loading the sausages on to the hot plate the excessive fat dripping into the fat catcher caught alight and flames almost hit the ceiling.
No injuries occurred but the BBQ was a write off, and the night will go down in Broadbeach Rotary highlights.

World Polio Day - 24 October 2017

World Polio Day was established by Rotary International over a decade ago to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis. Use of this inactivated poliovirus vaccine and subsequent widespread use of the oral poliovirus, developed by Albert Sabin, led to the establishment of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988. As of 2013, GPEI had reduced polio worldwide by 99.9%.

Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease. There is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines. Polio can be prevented through immunization. Polio vaccine, given multiple times, almost always protects a child for life. The strategy to eradicate polio is therefore based on preventing infection by immunizing every child until transmission stops and the world is polio-free.

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 10 OCTOBER 2017

Scribe:  Nancy Smith

Sergeant Kevn opened the meeting with an invitation to Noel to propose a toast to his choice of recepient, The Malaria Vacine Project, a Griffith University initiative
that is supported by our club, as well as Southport RC and the Southport Satelite club

Visitors Andrew Hamilton from the Rotary club of Dunedin Central and David Fisher from  Illinois USA, cousin of Ray Milton were welcomed.

Denis O'brien, Bob Jordon and Neil Jones were welcomed back from overseas.

Reports were called for by president Alain.
Noel Hodges has been working with three schools to get the RYTS and RYPEN programs established as ongoing opportunities for students.
Ray Milton reported on the POTY dinner next week which is organized pending final numbers.
Pauline updated us on the plans for the Anniversary celebration weekend of November 3 and 4th. A good contingent of representatives from our sister clubs in New Zealand and Japan are expected for the latter.

Both events. POOTY and the Club Anniversary  have  had a lot of work put into them by their dedicated committee members.  For the rest  our only responsibility is to indicate our attendance or not, something that a lot of us have been guilty of being a little slow on the uptake. Now is the time, jump on the website, make the commitment and follow up by making a payment (to the project account for POOTY & the Admin Account for the 45th celebrations).  These are two of the biggest events of the year for our club, and will be great evenings.   This is what Rotary is all about, don't miss out  on the chance to participate!

Wine bottles were happily received by Peter Tomlinson, winner of the raffle and Malcolm who's quick thinking butt moves ensured he came up a  winner in the heads and tales.

President Alain introduced our speaker, Andy Bell, current President of Surfers Sunrise Rotary Club.

Andy started his career as a police officer in New Zealand. In the late 1960's when there were no problems with drugs, but by 1971 narcotics were being smuggled into the country via Wellington.
Undercover agents were unknown at the time so he was sent in to infiltrate the gangs with no experience or direction.  Using his own initiative he developed a new identity and profile for himself.
Thanks to a young barmaid in a seedy pub he was introduced to "the bad guys" and from there slowily became their trusted ally.  It was not an easy time for him as he lived his role of gang member, selling drugs, and assisting a well organized major shop lifting ring.  He was beaten up on more than one occasion, both by the "bad guys" as well as the cops.  There were some compensations if you call living in a brothel with the madam a perk of the job????

Andy has promised to return to Broadbeach on another occasion as he has lots of stories to share.

WEEKLY LAUGHS

Dog to Farmer: Here are all 30 sheep
Farmer:            But I only count 26
Dog:                I rounded them up
---------------------------------------------

One day in the army I was assigned KP duty. I reported to the Mess Hall and was told by the sergeant in charge that he wanted me to make 100 gallons of soup for tonight's dinner. I told him I didn't know how to make soup. He handed me a book and told me to follow the directions carefully.
A couple hours later I had a large kettle of soup simmering. The sergeant came up and tasted the soup. He took a second spoonful and stood there staring at me. I thought I had really messed up the soup and was waiting for a reprimand.
Instead he said, "This tastes good... are you sure you followed the recipe?"
---------------------------------------------

A shoplifter was caught red-handed trying to steal a watch from an exclusive jewelry store. "Listen," said the shoplifter, "I know you don't want any trouble either. What do you say I just buy the watch and we forget about this?"
The manager agreed and wrote up the sales slip. The crook looked at the slip and said, "This is a little more than I intended to spend. Can you show me something less expensive?"
---------------------------------------------

Needing to look up a phone number while at a friend's house, my teenage daughter asked for a phone book. She might as well have asked for a papyrus scroll.
"A phone book?" asked her friend.
"You know," said my daughter. "A book with numbers in it."
"Oh," said her friend as it dawned on her. "You mean a math book."
---------------------------------------------

Two women came before wise King Solomon, dragging between them a young man in a sharp, three-piece tunic. "This young lawyer agreed to marry my daughter," said the first one.
"No! He agreed to marry MY daughter," said the other.
And so they haggled before the King until he called for silence.
"Bring me my biggest sword," said Solomon, "and I shall hew the young attorney in half. Each of you shall receive a half."
"Sounds good to me," said the first woman.
But the other woman said, "Oh Sire, do not spill innocent blood. Let the other woman's daughter marry him."
The wise King did not hesitate a moment. "The attorney must marry the first lady's daughter," he proclaimed.
"But she was willing to hew him in two!" exclaimed the King's court.
"Indeed," said wise King Solomon. "That shows she is the TRUE mother-in-law."
---------------------------------------------

Q: Why did the farmer call his pig "Ink"?
A: Because it was always running out of the pen.

Q: What do you call cattle with a sense of humor?
A: Laughing stock.

Q: What do you call a story about a broken pencil?
A: Pointless

Q: Why did the boy eat his homework?
A: Because his teacher said it was a piece of cake.

Q: Why don't fish need to do homework?
A: Because they're always swimming in schools.
