Hello Fellow Rotarians,

Another very good week in Rotary. It was great to welcome David O’Dwyer back from looking after family matters. We also welcomed guest speaker David Oxenham, Director of Engineering from the Tweed Shire Council who gave us a invaluable insight into the causes of the Murwillumbah flood and its aftermath effect. The meeting was followed by a Board meeting with constructive debate to resolve some important matters followed.
Many thanks to Peter Dimond for putting together the budget and ample opportunity to determine where we as a Club want to get to.  Like all good things, we have to work towards it and take opportunities when they present themselves, we need to know what it is we want to achieve and how to get there.
Special mention to Tony for his professionalism in preparing the Agenda and communicating the Minutes to all members. Many thanks also to other board members for their contribution into some realistic decisions that the Club may have to face.
As per Administration Director Bob Jordan’s email of Thursday the 10/8/2017 regarding meeting attendance. Granted there are multiple reasons for non attendance however we need to consider the facts. It is becoming a serious concern particularly with the view the hotel is now implementing the 25 Rule. In brief, this means that each week if attendance of 25 and above is not reached the BBRC has to fork out the difference. As mentioned in Bob’s email, last Tuesday night only 18 paying members attended, therefore the club had to pay the Hotel $224 from our Administration Account funds. We as the Broadbeach Rotary Club CANNOT sustain this on a weekly basis. I am sure you would agree that it cannot continue.
I urge all members to review and seriously consider Bob’s email in detail. There are some vital points that are to be considered. Please provide your URGENT feedback to Bob so he is able to collate your responses for presentation to the members.
On a final note Past President Bruce is running the Silver Circle which will act as a fundraiser to support our Sister Club guests during our the 45th Anniversary celebrations. Your support will be very greatly appreciated.

SECRETARY REPORT - Tony Lewis
 
At our meeting last week there were 18 paying members. As you are probably aware the Hotel charge us a minimum number of 25. Therefore at last weeks meeting, the Club had to pay out an additional $224 from our own funds. This is not the first time we have had to do this and there is an urgent need to reverse this trend.
During the week we received a request from the Rotary Club of Ashmore to join with them in staging the Antiques Fair to be held at the Star Casino in January 2018. This would require a commitment from the Club to provide some of our members to be part of the organising committee together with providing staffing for 2 shifts per day during the 5 day event. The Board decided that although we greatly appreciated the offer, however, due to our limited resources to staff fund raising events, it would not be practical to agree to this offer.

Big World - Small World
 
Pat & I love travelling, the more we see and explore of the world I realize that there is so much to see however, I am amazed at how often we meet people with connections to home. 
Our first venture out of Australia wa a cruise from Sydney to Melbourne via the Pacific Islands. While waiting at our hotel for a cab to the wharf we met another couple from the South coast who were doing the same trip. When asked where we came from I said Glen Innes as I didn't expect anyone over five hundred miles away to know where Deepwater was. The reply was isn't that near Deepwater (we almost bought a pub there a few years ago).
A few years later in New Zealand some of our group had a fright at a pedestrian crossing so the next morning I decided to test their theory (that Kiwis don't worry about pedestrians).  I carefully stepped out onto a zebra crossing on a busy Christchurch Street. The driver stopped and called out "what the hell are you doing here John"? He was our local mechanic from Deepwater.
In 1998 we decided to blow the budget on a six week trip to South America. As we couldn't find a conducted tour to all the places we wanted to see at the time we decided to do it on our own. After a couple of weeks of hearing very little English  spoken we were having dinner at the Igauzo Falls Hotel in Argentina when we noticed a couple speaking with an Australian accent a few tables away. After our meal we approached them and discovered they were from Inverell, just sixty miles from home, and that the husband worked for the Council at Tenterfield
for three months before the trip and had been driving passed our property twice a day.
Not long after moving to Broadbeach we traveled to Africa. Before we left we were told that most of the group came from Victoria and South Australia but there was another couple from Queensland - turned out that the couple live a hundred metres from us at Waterline and that he had worked for the Australian Wool Board and was brother in law to one of our neighbours at Deepwater.
In 2014 while on a small day trip boat on a Norwegian Fiord I met an elderly lady from Winton who told me that a best friend of her Mothers left the area to marry a man from Deepwater (ninety years ago) - the man she married was a close friend of my fathers and I knew them both well when they were alive. Their son grandchildren and great grandchildren still live at Deepwater.

August is Membership & New Club Development Month and is a time to celebrate our club, our members, and the good we do in our communities and around the world!  Many people join Rotary to serve others locally and globally.  Rotary allows us to make a difference while promoting fellowship and international understanding and peace.
And you know too that membership matters. It is the lifeblood of Rotary for the more members we have, the more we can "do good in the world." Can you remember when you were inducted into Rotary?  Have you considered why you were proposed by your sponsor? What made you decide to join?  Did you feel a sense of pride, of achievement, to be invited to join an organization of the highest international repute?  Have you shared Rotary with someone?  Is there someone you know to whom you would give the gift of Rotary?  
In order to spread the workload of running this club, in order to provide the best support we can to our local community and particularly our youth and in order to contribute our bit internationally, we all have an obligation to not only maintain, but increase membership. How long is it since you bought a potential member to one of our meetings?
 
 
 
 
Club News
The Club Board recently agreed to donate one of our older mobility scooters to Emily Gerhardt of North Talwood (which is west of Goondiwindi).
Emily was unfortunate to be trapped under a horse float (for five hours) when she tried to change a tire in the middle of summer. Emily has lost her leg from the hip down and suffered badly from burns caused by the sun on the metal. Emily is in her early twenties and has spent the last eight months in hospital. The request to help Emily was put to the Board by Peter Tomlinson who has provided the following photos reflecting a wonderful outcome.
The first photo shows how happy Emily is as the scooter is loaded to be taken to her home. The second photo is Emily having lessons with the scooter and the little boy is not Emily's, it is Peter's grandson Cameron who took the opportunity for a ride.

GOLD COAST POLICE OFFICER OF THE YEAR AWARDS - TUESDAY 17 OCTOBER
The thirteenth annual presentation of The Gold Coast Police Officer of the Year Award will be held at the Southport Golf Club on Tuesday 17 October 2017.
Southport Rotary Club has kindly surrendered its venue to us and will be joining us for this special event on our annual Rotary calendar.
Cost on this occasion will be $55 per person. More details when finalised.

BROADBEACH 45TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION DINNER - SATURDAY 4 NOVEMBER 
Planning is underway for this milestone celebration and invitations have been extended to our Sister Clubs for this special event which will be held at Southport Golf Club on Saturday 4 November 2017. More details over ensuing months as program details are finalised. In the meantime please mark this special night (which will replace our normal meeting on 31 October) in your diary.

Polio this week as of 2 August 2017

This year to date there has been 8 new cases of wild poliovirus type 1 in endemic countries compared to 19 for the same period in 2016 (Afghanistan 5 (6 last year) and Pakistan 3 (13 last year)).
Latest reports on the three endemic countries follow:
 
  • No new wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases were reported in the past week.  The total number of WPV1 cases for 2017 remains five.  The most recent case in the country had onset of paralysis on 19 June from Kandahar.
  • A National Emergency Operation Centre mission visited the Southern Region last week to support a field investigation and program review following the reporting of a new polio case from the region. In-depth program review continues, focusing on identifying and addressing the key challenges and risks and improving the quality of supplementary immunization activities (SIA) in the region.
  • No new cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) were reported in the past week.  The total number of WPV1 cases for 2016 remains four and no cases have been reported in 2017.  The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 21 August 2016 in Monguno Local Government Area (LGA), Borno.
  • Nigeria continues to implement emergency response to the detected WPV1 strain and circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) strains affecting the country (last detected in 2016).
  • No new wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases were reported in the past week; the total number of WPV1 cases for 2017 remains three.  The most recent case in the country had onset of paralysis on 11 June, from Killa Abdullah, Balochistan.
  • The July subnational immunization days have concluded. An in-depth program review is in progress, led by the National and Provincial Emergency Operation Centres, focusing on the identification of possible pockets of low immunity populations and appropriate planning for the upcoming SIAs.
 
FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 08 AUGUST 2017

Sergeant Russ commenced the meeting with  Inviting  Bill  Rex  to  give  the  toast.  Bill  toasted both  football  teams on  the   Gold  Coast  who  take   part in  the  national  competition.
Russ  welcomed   honorary  member  Uwe,   regular  visitor  Adrian  Crowe and  Introduced  President  Alain.
Alain  welcomed  back  David  O’dwyer and  Graham Sivyer. There  were  no  Director’s  reports  but  Alain  announced  Bruce  Kuhn  is  running  a  Silver  Circle  and  needs  numbers.  Please  contact  Bruce  for  more information.
Other speakers were Bob Jordan who spoke on a new proposal from Bunnings which had been made on Tuesday and would be discussed by the board at their meeting later that night. Details will be advised  to members when it is finalised.
Noel Hodges advised he and Grahame Werrell were proposing to do a sizzle on the 10th September for Suicide Prevention week. The club did a similar sizzle 12 months ago.
Sergeant Russ then took over the sergeant's session and was his usual vitriolic self, he had a enthusiastic bunyip in Treasurer Peter Dimond who gladly helped fill the coffers

We then came to the guest speaker David Oxenham from Tweed Valley Council, David was introduced by Neil Baldwin. David is the Director of Engineering at the council and was appointed  OIC  for the Council when Cyclone Debbie visited us over 31st  March, 1st  April, 2017. David’s address very fully described the horrow, tragedy and absolute damage done to the Murwillunbah area  over this period.
Amongst  the issues he spoke about were.
On 28th March Debbie was a category 4 storm when she crossed the coast and the forecast rain was the at 350 mils. In addition to 200 mils that had been received 2  weeks before. By the time the rain finished the area had received 650 mils  .
As is usual in N.S.W the S.E.S. take charge in conjunction with local authorities. David was the council's Critical Response Controller.
The main devastation was at South Murwillumbah where six deaths occurred,2100 houses flooded and 30% of the council’s vehicle fleet was ruined. Total damage cost was $6.9m 
In  total  the  area  was  devastated  and will  take  many  months,  even  years  to  recover.
During his presentation David showed slides that highlighted just how catastrophic the area damage was.
A great  presentation, well received by members and more questions would have been asked had time permitted.
At the end of proceedings Neil presented David with a club whisky glass.
