Dear all,

As the year progresses it great to see the future is positive with President Elect Alain and a few members being inspired at President Elect Training and District Assembly last weekend and District Governor Elect Darryl and assistant Governor David sharing the strategic plan for next year (note - no acronyms, new rotary strategy, allow extra typing time though). Also interesting to hear from our neighbor Simon Brooks of Surfers Sunrise with a younger outlook. Ultimately we are all in this together and individual strengths and attitudes will make everything come together.

With some of our members venturing further a field looking for new members and Rotary experiences, our projects and fundraising activities are stretched so please help where you can. On the travel front too, as I mentioned last week, there is a Rotary travel insurance and I have a copy of the policy for anyone interested.

The next couple of meetings will be fellowship events with the Inner Wheel for dinner followed by our own fellowship dinner at the Hub. Perhaps the hub event is a great opportunity to 'bring a friend or family' to enjoy an informal Rotary experience and showcase our resources, perhaps even a rotary neighbour, lets put it out there!

I'm putting together a team for the Rotary Ramble Sunday 26th so if you would like to be involved in a fun day, please let me know.

John Harding rang Wednesday morning to say that he has just completed 10 days of radiation at Pindarra and will hopefully be released at the weekend.He is confident the radiation has assisted his overall health prospects although the treatment has some side effects which are not so good.

I also spoke to Lorraine Hawton Wednesday who stated that Keith is “battling on” and is back out of hospital and at home. He is o.k. to receive visitors and/or call but preferably in the afternoon. I have promised to keep in touch.

MEMBER PROFILE

NOEL HODGES

I was born in Bathurst NSW on the 24 December 1946. Hence the first name Noel but I don’t think the angels had much to sing about with me. Both of my parent’s families lived in Wattle Flat a gold mining area near to other gold mining areas at Sofala and Hill End. My parents told many stories about how they lived during the great Depression and catching rabbits was one of the main sources of food. Panning for alluvial gold was the main source of income. My father bought and sold rabbit skins as a living during my early childhood at Bathurst.

My father was also a baker and an opportunity came up to own a bakery at Batlow. At that time the town existed on the basis of a cannery (Mountain Maid produce) and apple growing .I went to high school in Tumut via an old school bus that frequently broke down. I was fortunate to get a Commonwealth scholarship to go to University but my parents were struggling to meet living away costs. I was with the BHP training as a metallurgist whilst going to University when I left after 12 months to help my father in a new bakery at Culcairn near Albury NSW. I spent several years there learning to be a baker and pastry cook. I worked in the bakery at night and during the day did seasonal work in the local farms doing hay bale carting, sheep shearing roustabout, fencing and grain handling.

Major changes were happening in retailing and the concept of walking to the bread shop each day for your bread etc. was coming to an end. In addition there was a price war between the 2 major flour milling companies and the rival flour mill to the one supplying our bakery started delivering bread from Albury door to door in Culcairn. I looked around for another job as my father sold the business and retired. I was employed by the local Council as Jnr Assistant Engineer and began my career in local government. I boarded in the local hotel and commenced external study to become a local government engineer. It was here that I met Kay who had been transferred to Culcairn as a primary school teacher.

We married in 1971 and I moved as an engineering assistant to Wagga Wagga 2 years, senior assistant engineer Tumut 3 years, followed by Deputy Shire Engineer at Narrabri 3 years where I completed my engineering qualifications. By that time we had 2 boys Brett and Gavin and Kay was still teaching. Being ambitious, I was municipal engineer at Moree 2 years before coming to the Gold Coast City Council as the engineer in charge of Sewerage. We had a day labour workforce of 500 and put sewerage into most of the Gold Coast (Isle of Capri, Labrador, Benowa, Paradise Point, Mermaid Beach, Palm Beach and Tugun.).I progressed to become Director for both Water and Sewerage where Council constructed most of the current W&S infrastructure for the Gold Coast (Hinze Dam expansion, major treatment facilities at Molendinar and Coombabah and the effluent discharge at the Spit entrance.).In the meantime I finished another external qualification as a local government town planner.

In 1984 the Council was not happy with their City Planner and they asked me to take on this position. This was very controversial as I had no practical experience in town planning but all the hurdles were overcome and I became the Director for all the planning and development on the Gold Coast until the Gold Coast City Council and Albert Shire Council were amalgamated in 1995. During this time there was massive development including most of the international hotels. In the meantime I finished another external qualification with an MBA in public administration.

I accepted a salary package and had a break as Kay was still enjoying teaching at TAFE. I then took a position at Beaudesert as W&S engineer and worked there stress free for about 7 years. I was asked to put in for the City Planning position at Tweed Shire and I finished my local government career there 4 years later(not stress free). I then worked 3 days a week on contract for a major property developer Bob Ell for 2 years and have now retired never to work again. Every day now is like a Sunday and with bowls, travel, Rotary, Freemasonry and 8 grandchildren from our 2 sons we are always busy.

Joint Meeting With Broadbeach Inner Wheel Club

For our meeting this week we will be joining our partners and friends at Broadbeach Inner Wheel Club at the Changmai Thai Restaurant, 2779 Gold Coast Highway, Broadbeach at our usual time of 6.00pm for 6.30pm. The restaurant is opposite Cascade Gardens and parking is available. BYO or drinks available from the bar. Cost will be $35.00 per person payable in cash at the door.

This is an Inner Wheel Club fundraiser to support Destiny Rescue, an organisation rescuing children from child sexual exploitation and slavery. Please come along and help make this a great night while also helping a very worthwhile cause. Register as normal or advise Noel Hodges direct.

On Sunday 26 March 2017, Gold Coast Rotary in partnership with Surfers Sunrise Rotary and Griffith University Satellite Rotary Club will stage the inaugural Gold Coast Ramble - a major community event. This goes way beyond a Fun Run. It is great fun, since you need observation skills, the ability to solve some trivia questions. And last, but not least: you will help to support various very worthwhile local charities, including PCYC, the Salvos and Gold Coast Homeless Youth.

Whilst it is the inaugural event for the Gold Coast, the concept has been well and truly proven successful by the Rotary organizers in Perth. Registration can be for individuals or for teams between 4 and 6 people. Organize a team or contact President Bruce to join a team. Let's see how many teams we can come up with and see who comes up as Broadbeach number one on the day!!!

The Rotary Foundation Weekly

This year we are celebrating 100 years of our Rotary Foundation doing good in the world.

Peter Tomlinson and Tony Lewis were presented with Centurion certificates and lapel badges by Club and District Rotary Foundation Chair, Neil Jones.

In the current Rotary year we now have 24 members who have made personal contributions including 17 Centurions, 4 Sustaining members and one Paul Harris Society Member. In total, personal contributions to "Our Charity" this year exceed $3,000.

We are well over half way towards achieving our goal of 100% participation in the 100th year of The Rotary Foundation. Any personal contribution is acceptable but we are seeking to meet the International Club Challenge which requires that all members contribute a minimum of US$26.50 (the amount of the original donation 100 years ago). At current exchange rates this equates A$36

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 14 MARCH 2017

Sergeant Russ opened the meeting and invited Les Bulluss to propose the toast.

Les toasted volunteers and spoke of the enormous contribution they make to society.

President Bruce then welcomed our guest speakers, DGE Darrell Brown, Simon Brook, the President of Surfers Sunrise and our ADG David Baguley.

He said this was the last official meeting until the trip to Japan and gave an outline of the trip. He also said how informative the District Assembly had been last weekend and commended it to anyone who has not previously attended one.

He also informed us that if a Rotarian travels overseas to an International Rotary event, the family is covered by Rotary travel insurance (with some conditions).

David gave a presentation of the Gold Coast Ramble to be held on 26 March. They need volunteers and teams for this Rotary event which is best described as a car rally on foot.

President Bruce asked for volunteers for a team from Broadbeach.

Kevin O’Brien reminded us that it is only 4 weeks until the Young Achievers Award evening and asked everyone to be alert for nominees. He also asked for volunteers for the night at the Hub on the 28^th.

Malcolm spoke of the difficulties of maintaining numbers for the sausage sizzles. He thanked those who do the lion’s share.

Neil Jones presented Peter Tomlinson and Tony Lewis with the Centurion Certificates.

It was then time for sergeant Russ. Bunyips for the night were Harrold and Cec.

Alain addressed the club and said that he attended PETS and found it very rewarding. He then introduced our guest speakers, DGE Darrell Brown and Simon Brook.

Darrell was a charter member of Broadbeach and has been a member of rotary for 45 years.

Darrell said he wanted to update the club on changes to come. He started by saying the number of Districts will be reduced and boundaries will change. These are not defined as yet. There are currently 21 Districts and this will drop to 15-17. Glen Innes wishes to leave and join 9630 but they need District conference approval to do this.

Darrel introduced the theme for his year as directed by RI President Ian Risely. The theme is “Rotary; Making a difference”. The Symbol depicts peoples of the world.

Darrell briefly discussed membership and stressed the importance of setting up Satellite clubs to widen the appeal of Rotary.

Having attended the International Assembly in San Diego in January, Darrell outlined some of the aims for the coming year.

The need to increase numbers of women in Rotary. Numbers have dropped from 20%to 13%.
Focus and Increase Humanitarian Service.
Enhance Rotary’s public image and awareness.

Darrell then outlined his goals for the year.

Members to expose Rotary to friends and acquaintances by inviting them to a meeting or event.
Promote member retention
Focus on Rotary initiatives
Support the Rotary Foundation
Support the DG Partner project for ROMAC.
Encourage clubs to set their own goals.

IP Ian has challenged every Rotarian to plant a tree in his year AS President.

Darrell then introduced Simon Brook.

Simon was a GSE participant and subsequently joined Rotary. He is the current President of Surfers Sunrise. He has renewed enthusiasm in his club by asking members to remember why they joined Rotary and to try to maintain that same enthusiasm now.

President Bruce thanked our speakers and closed the meeting.

Paddy had been drinking at his local Dublin pub all day and most of the night celebrating St Patrick's Day. Mick, the bartender says, 'You'll not be drinking anymore tonight, Paddy'. Paddy replies, 'OK Mick, I'll be on my way then'. Paddy spins around on his stool and steps off. He falls flat on his face. 'Damn' he says and pulls himself up by the stool and dusts himself off. He takes a step towards the door and falls flat on his face,
'Damn, 'Damn !'
He looks to the doorway and thinks to himself that if he can just get to the door and some fresh air he'll be fine. He belly crawls to the door and shimmies up to the door frame. He sticks his head outside and takes a deep breath of fresh air, feels much better and takes a step out onto the sidewalk and falls flat on his face.
'By'Jeebers.... I'm a little crocked,' he says.
He can see his house just a few doors down, and crawls to the door, hauls himself up the door frame, opens the door and shimmies inside. He takes a look up the stairs and says 'No damn' way'. He crawls up the stairs to his bedroom door and says 'I can make it to the bed'. He takes a step into the room and falls flat on his face He says ' Damn it ' and falls into bed.
The next morning, his wife, Jess, comes into the room carrying a cup of coffee and says, 'Get up Paddy. Did you have a bit to drink last night ?'
Paddy says, 'I did, Jess. I was really crocked But how'd you know?'
'Mick phoned . . . you left your wheelchair at the pub again.'

As one of relatively few female airline pilots, I've often been mistaken for a flight attendant, ticket agent or even a snack-bar employee. Occasionally people will see me in uniform and ask if I'm a "real" pilot. Still others congratulate me for making it in a male-dominated field.
One day, I was in the restroom before a flight. I was at the sink, brushing my teeth, when a woman walked through the door and looked over at me. "My sister would be so proud of you!" she remarked.
"Oh, is your sister an airline pilot too?" I asked.
With a confused expression the woman said, "No. She's a dentist."
