Hello Fellow Rotarians

On Tuesday evening we had the pleasure of welcoming Councillor Paul Taylor,thank you for visiting Paul in our new premises.

We also had the pleasure of welcoming our Guest speaker Brenton Rickard. Brenton is the Manager for Sport Services for the Commonwealth games 2018 and a former champion swimmer, having won six individual Commonwealth Games medals, three World championship Medals and two Olympic medals. Brenton gave a presentation about his life as an Olympian and the sacrifices that were required to perform at an Elite level and how now he has had to adapt to life after reaching those dizzy heights during his distinguished career. Brenton also brought along his Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for us to get up close and personal with and which was appreciated by all.

Great to see Nancy back from a long sabbatical in Canada.

Thank you to the members who have come forward to assist Pauline with the 45^th Anniversary preparations.

As mentioned at the meeting our visiting Rotarians from Sister club Taraunga have enquired about being home hosted whilst here. Please advise if you will be able to assist. It appears at this stage that we could have 8 visitors from Tauranga.

Ray Milton advised that POOTY preparations are nearly complete and has asked for members book their seats for what will be a great evening.

We have the President of Surfers Sunrise as guest speaker this coming Tuesday which promises to be another great eveing of fellowship and fun at the Broadbeach Rotary Club.

My thanks to Harold Busch for offering to write and produce the Clubs' "Our 4th Decade" book. It is very much appreciated.

I hope those who attended our first meeting at the Quality Hotel enjoyed the night and the venue. The Hotel have provided a reasonable size store room for all of our equipment. At the end of each meeting we need to put our equipment away and would appreciate the help of members to do this as the store room is quite close to the meeting room. It would only take a couple of minutes.For those who may remember when we had a storage cupboard in the Phoenix room at Crowne Plaza, the winners of the raffle and heads and tails were designated to put the equipment away, perhaps we should consider reintroducing this.

My first retail experience commenced when I was fairly young which was as a casual after school and during holidays.

On completion of high school I was employed full time. The Business consisted of a Delicatessen Fresh Produce and a large Grocery Store One of my early requirements was going to the Whole Sale Fresh Produce Markets to obtain our stock we demanded high quality produce and one supplier that stood out was Chinese namely Hop Sing he provided quality Spinach Silver Beet Radish and salad Spring Onions Obviously he made very good money as every time he smiled he revealed five Gold front teeth Another thing I learnt after starting early breakfast was a nice corned beef and mustard sandwich which you consumed with a schooner of beer at the hotel opposite the markets .Another incident I had was when delivering groceries. This day I was running late and had to return to the store for two items short on a customer order. I returned and parked and went inside unbeknown to myself the Boss had parked his car behind me although at a distance. I came running out and failed to see his car i jumped in the delivery vehicle put the foot down and reversed straight into his vehicle I did not know how to tell him any how whilst it was a little testy initially all things worked out well

GOLD COAST POLICE OFFICER OF THE YEAR AWARDS - TUESDAY 17 OCTOBER

The thirteenth annual presentation of The Gold Coast Police Officer of the Year Award will be held at the Southport Golf Club on Tuesday 17 October 2017.

Southport Rotary Club has kindly surrendered its venue to us and will be joining us for this special event on our annual Rotary calendar.

Cost on this occasion will be $55 per person. More details when finalised.

BROADBEACH 45TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION DINNER - SATURDAY 4 NOVEMBER

Grahame Werrell spoke on Suicide Prevention Remembrance Walk where our Club donated

sausages to attendees. Grahame , Noel Hodges and John Curr cooked for 80-90 people

at Kurrawa Park on Sunday 10 September.

David O’Dwyer introduced by President Alain

David gave an interesting history of the construction of the now Quality Inn premises.

David arrived on the Gold Coast from NZ in 1981 and purchased a house in Himalaya St

not far from the hotel site. The Gold Coast was booming however the hotel construction

had come to a halt. David approached the onsite construction manager for work. David was

engaged as soon as it was known that the owner of the timber mill in NZ that David had

used and was friends with was the brother in law of the construction manager. He worked

with 30 carpenters for 12 months to finish the project. All the wages were paid in cash and

he was paid $12 per hour. Each week 2 security guards brought a large bag of cash which

was dumped on the floor and he had to distribute the cash to the workers.

A major problem was encountered at the end of the project when it was found none of the

plumbing worked and the opening was already scheduled. The plumbing had to be connected

to the Council sewerage main in the middle of Markeri Street. So David arranged all the

equipment and materials to connect to the Council sewer and closed half the road at

9.00 pm and worked on the connection all night with the roadway open again in the

morning. All this was done without any Council approvals or inspections. David was amazed

what could be achieved on the Gold Coast at that time knowing full well at this time such

a connection and road closure with W H and S requirements would take at least 6 months.

David thanked everyone present for listening and described it as a Great Experience!

A lady walks into a bar and sees a really cute guy sitting at the counter. She goes over and asks him what he is drinking. "Magic Beer", he says. She thinks he's a little crazy, so she walks around the bar, but after noticing that there is no one else worth talking to, she goes back to the man sitting at the bar and says, “That isn't really Magic Beer, is it?" "Yes, I'll show you."
He takes a drink of the beer, jumps out the window, flies around the building three times, and comes back through the window.
The lady can't believe it: "I bet you can't-do that again."
"Oh yea?" He smirks.

She is amazed and immediately asks for a magic beer of her own.
The guy says to the bartender, "Give her one of what I'm having."
She gets her drink, takes a gulp of the beer, jumps out the window... and immediately plummets 30 stories down.
The bartender looks at the guy and says, "You know something, Superman? You're a terrible person when you're drinking."

While trying to explain to our six-year-old daughter how much technology had changed, my husband pointed to our brand-new personal computer and told her that when he was in college, a computer with the same amount of power would have been the size of a house.
Wide-eyed, our daughter asked, "How big was the mouse?"

One night a teenage girl brought her new boyfriend home to meet her parents, and they were appalled by his appearance: leather jacket, motorcycle boots, tattoos and pierced nose.
Later, the parents pulled their daughter aside and confessed their concern. "Dear," said the mother diplomatically, "he doesn't seem very nice."
