President's Message
Pauline Armstrong

Fellow Rotarians and friends

On behalf of President Pauline I again extend warm greetings to you all

We enjoyed an unusual meeting last week with some wonderful entertainment provided by bush poet Mick Martin. His own creations and recitals of Banjo Patterson had us all captivated but the running of the Broadbeach Rotary Club Handicap had us all struggling to pick the winner.
Thank you to Grahame Werrell for organising this very entertaining guest speaker.

The Board has this week approved sponsorship for our past member Laurie Lynch's daughter Chloe to attend the District RYLA Camp in February. The RYLA Dinner Night is Tuesday 5 February and is open to all Rotarians to attend so if you are interested please let Youth Director Andrew know.

Our own Bruce Kuhn will be leading the D9640 Group Vocational Exchange Team to Philippines D3780 later this Rotary year and our Club will be home hosting the visiting Philippines Team on their arrival for four days from 9th to 13th March.
When Bruce canvassed this at a club meeting last year many members indicated their willingness to home host a team member and we now need to formalise the five members to home host.
If you have already indicated to Bruce you can host a team member, or you are able to host, please confirm this with Bruce ASAP.

President Pauline will be back with us this week when our guest speaker will be Ross Muir, a member of Bruce's outbound GVE team and who is also sponsored by Broadbeach.

Look forward to seeing you there,

Neil Jones
Vice President.

SECRETARY REPORT - Tony Lewis

The following is some interesting information received from District.
Our membership has remained the same with a total of 42 members (36 Active and 6 Honorary)

A great start to the New Year. You have helped our Rotary District 9640 record the highest membership growth in Australia in 2018.

From 1st July to 31 Dec 2018 our district had a +45 growth in membership. This has increased the public image of our district & all our clubs. Please share the news with your club members, family & friends.

36 of our clubs grew or retained their membership. Biggest growth clubs are Hope Island (+8), Eclub (+7) Tenterfield (+5) and Varsity Lakes (+23)
Let's keep this positive trend going and be the Membership Champions in Australia this Rotary year.

We are planning a District Public Image Seminar to help clubs leverage Public Image to attract new members and retain existing members. It's on Sunday 14 April in Gold Coast.

Seating is limited to 50. Will you be keen to attend or send a representative from your club? Please let me know early, so we reserve a seat for your club.

Wish you a wonderful 2019.

Warm Regards,

Andy Rajapakse

On our recent trip to the USA a couple of interesting  events took place.

After flying to San Francisco with a weeks stay at Monterey. We made a further flight down to Los Angeles. had a one night stay at the Crown Plaza Harbor Hotel prior to catching the Island Princess Cruise ship which wa going down through the Panama Canal to Fort Lauderdale.

On arriving at Los Angeles airport I had previously booked and paid for an Airport Shuttle Bus to the Crown Plaza Hotel. After an hour and making a number of inquiries and phone calls it transpired that this particular Shuttle Bus had stopped picking up passengers from the airport some two months earlier. Thus resulting in having to pay for a taxi to take us to the hotel, which was 25 klms away.

On our return. After contacting our agent I was duly refunded the amount I had previously paid.

After four days on board the cruise all the passengers were notified that a Rotary Meeting was being held. So Marie and I duly turned up for the meeting along with a staff member, who was there to make sure everything was in order. After waiting for a further ten minutes with no further passengers turning up the meeting was cancelled. However, both Marie and I received a certificate stating that we had attended a Service Club Meeting on board the Island Princess.

Rotary Information Weekly

JANUARY IS VOCATIONAL SERVICE MONTH

Vocational Service is the very essence of Rotary. It is what sets Rotary apart from other service organizations.
As Rotarians we all have the responsibility of representing our vocations within our club.  We can do this in many ways including:
- Talking about our vocation in our club and learning about other member's vocations.
- Mentoring others, particularly young people to achieve their career goals
- always act with integrity and practice the highest ethical standards in what you do.
- utilise your skills in club activities to support the wider community.

Our annual Gold Coast Police Officer of the year award is a prime example of our club practicing Vocational Service

2019-20 presidential theme:
"Rotary Connects the World"
Rotary International President-elect Mark Daniel Maloney explained his vision for building a stronger Rotary, calling on leaders to expand connections to their communities and to embrace innovative membership models. A member of the Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama, USA, Maloney unveiled the 2019-20 presidential theme, Rotary Connects the World, to incoming district governors at Rotary’s annual training event, the International Assembly, in San Diego, California, USA.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

Wednesday 20 February 2019
Multi District TRF Function at Loganholme

District 9640 Conference 29-31 March 2019

OK, so it seems still to be a long way off but accommodation will soon become hard to get - some places are already fully booked.

Why attend a District Conference?
  • Well, to start, it's fun: you meet lots of interesting people
  • You will hear Keynote Speakers for which you normally would pay hundreds of dollars to attend
  • The dinners are always superb fellowship events. The Saturday Night dinner is always very vibrant; this year they have a top notch Jazz & Swing band.
  • You learn a couple of things about Rotary which you may not have known before
Registration for Rotarians and their partners is free of charge, however, in fairness, a fee applies to partake in the events which serve food.  Click on this link to go to the Registration Page.

WEEKLY LAUGHS

My job search

1.  My first job was working in an Orange Juice factory, but I got canned .  Couldn't concentrate .

2.  Then I worked in the woods as a Lumberjack, but just couldn't hack it, so they gave me the axe .

3.  After that, I tried being a Tailor, but wasn't suited for it, mainly because it was a sew-sew job.

4.  Next, I tried working in a Muffler Factory, but that was too exhausting.

5.  Then, tried being a Chef - figured it would add a little spice to my life, but just didn't have the thyme.

6.  Next, I attempted being a Deli Worker, but any way I sliced it.... I couldn't cut the mustard.

7.  My best job was a Musician, but eventually found  I wasn't noteworthy.

8.  I studied a long time to become a Doctor,  but didn't have any patience.

9.  Next, was a job in a Shoe Factory.  Tried hard but just didn't fit in.

10.  I became a Professional Fisherman, but discovered I couldn't live on my net income.

11.  Managed to get a good job working for a Pool Maintenance Company, but the work was just too draining.

12. So then I got a job in a Workout Center, but they said I wasn't fit for the job.

13.  After many years of trying to find steady work , I finally got a job as a Historian - until I realized there was no future in it.

14.  My last job was working in Starbucks,  but had to quit because it was the same old grind.

15 .  SO, I TRIED RETIREMENT AND I FOUND I'M PERFECT FOR THE JOB!
