It has been a very unsettling week with the theft of our van. The police were quick to respond (wonder why??) so we had our police report sooner rather than later. The news agencies have been very kind in reporting it in the newspapers and on TV. Sadly, there has been no response but as John Monks said the plates would have been off moments after they stole it and it then just becomes another white van. John has been negotiating with Suncorp regarding the insurance claim so hopefully we can then find another van to do the job in the next few weeks.
I had an unexpected trip to Melbourne this week to see Harry Potter. This show is on another level of presentation and professionalism and I would recommend it to anyone who loves great spectacle and is a fan of Harry Potter.  Thank you to the person who stood in for me at the sizzle.
Due to a family commitment I missed last week’s expedition to Kurrawa surf Club. Neil Jones tells me it was a great night and well supported by members. Sick grandchildren come first but I was disappointed to miss this event.
Please keep thinking of hosting our incoming GCE team. We need help in this area.
I look forward to catching up with you all next week.

I often hear that a members details such as their birthday, anniversary, partners details etc., as seen in Rotarlight are either incorrect or are missing some detail.
I also am asked about the minutes of Board meetings.
All of this information can be found in the Club Runner section of our web page and it takes only a couple of steps to get into this area.
Please note this area is only available to members and thus a login is required.
This can be done by going into the web page (for example via Google) at Rotary Club of Broadbeach.
At the top right hand corner you will see "Member Login" Click on this and enter your login details and this will take you to a screen where you can view all Club information.
You will see a lot of fields you can access, but there are two that may be of interest to you, these are under the headings of "My Club Administration" and "Membership Manager"
Under the heading "My Club Administration" you can go to the sub heading "View Club Documents" here, you can see all current and past Club documents including Board Minutes, Club Bylaws, Club Constitution, documents relating to the Hub and many more.
Under the heading "Membership Manager" you can go to the sub heading "Active Members List" Here you can view your own membership details and can make any changes/corrections and even include a photo of yourself if one is not on the file. This is important as it gives you, the member, the opportunity to insure your personal membership record it up-to-date and accurate.
Ensuring the information on your file is correct is very important as the information is automatically uploaded into Rotarlight in the areas of birthdays, anniversary's, partners details etc.
It is very important to note that the personal information in your membership file can only be accessed by yourself and by no other member, with exception of the President, Secretary, Treasurer and a current Board member

Musing of my life as a Returning Officer.
 
Elections are run on the seat of your pants as the Electoral Commissioner of Qld never knows the date and is never prepared for it. The Premier of the time never liaises with the ECQ. My first R.O. job was in 1992 and I was appointed 5 days before the election was called and sent to a R.O's training school a week later. So by then I had less than 3 weeks to organize the Election. I did manage to get through without any mistakes.
All my State Government Elections were organized from home and at times my lounge and dining room looked like a warehouse. The first few elections were held in summer so bought myself an air-conditioner to allow my staff, party scrutineers and candidates to have some comfort. However the next election was called 6 months early in winter so my air-conditioner was useless.
 
Completed ballot papers by voters  varied from crude & rude to clever. One voter completed all but one of the boxes with frowning faces and the last one with a smiley face. As the intention was clear I used to mark it as formal.
 
My most stressful election was my last which was the 2008 Gold Coast Local Government Election. I had been appointed by the GCCC as the returning officer in 2007 and was well in advance with planning when the Premier decided that he wanted ECQ to run all local government elections. What a disaster that decision proved to be. The ECQ was not ready to run anything in 2008. The stationery and equipment was not manufactured and the computer software to run things like staff hiring was non existent.  Two weeks before the election I had not hired any of my 800 strong staff and at the last minute I had to do it manually. In addition the division boundaries were changed practically at the last minute.  Anyway despite all that I managed to get a Mayor and 14 Councillors elected.
 
But despite the success I resigned soon after.

Club Van Stolen in Hub Break and Enter
Thieves broke into The Hub overnight Thursday 24 January by cutting a hole in the chain link fence and jemmying the toilet window.
They then drove off with the club van including the large esky, first aid kit and toolbox and tools used for scooter repairs.
President Pauline was interviewed by the Gold Coast Bulletin, and Channels 7 and 9 with coverage in the Bulletin Monday 28 January and both the Nine and Seven Gold Coast news bulletins that evening.
Loss of our vehicle will severely impinge on our scooter project and fund raising sausage sizzles over the short term but contingency plans are being developed to ensure we maintain our service to the community without interuption.
At the time of going to press the van had not been recovered and we are progressing our insurance claim.

Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove Re-visits
Malaria Vaccine Project Tuesday 29 January 2019
 
PDG Graham Jones, chair of the Malaria Vaccine Project commented:
"The visit of the Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove to the Institute for Glycomics went very well. Although the visit was brief, we were all impressed with the strong interest he showed in the vaccine development at the Institute and the work of Rotary in supporting this research.He asked some very pertinent questions which Danielle handled beautifully and he also mentioned Rotary several times when he was speaking to the media.
Both Danielle and I had the opportunity to speak to the media and I expect that the visit will be featured on  both the Channel 7 and Channel 9 news tonight probably in both local and state broadcasts. Both Danielle and I mentioned Rotary several times so hopefully it will receive valuable coverage. Danielle also did a radio broadcast this morning on 91.7 ABC Gold Coast. 
Many thanks to Gerard for setting this in train. Even though it did not occur as initially planned, the interest and sincerity of the Governor General was obvious and moreover he fitted this visit in while attending a funeral of a very dear military friend. Even though the Governor General will not be available for a March Anniversary Celebration his support for all aspects of the Malaria Vaccine Project is clearly evident and he even mentioned further involvement after he leaves office".

Broadbeach will be hosting this important District event at the Quality Hotel, Mermaid Waters with a luncheon on Sunday 10 March.
We will be hosting the D3780 Team members at that time and Bruce's outbound team will depart a few days later so in order to ensure maximum support for this function it will replace our normal weekly meeting scheduled for Tuesday 12 March.
More details in due course but please note your diary accordingly.
 
District 9640 Conference 29-31 March 2019
 
OK, so it seems still to be a long way off but accommodation will soon become hard to get - some places are already fully booked.   
 
Why attend a District Conference?
  • Well, to start, it's fun: you meet lots of interesting people 
  • You will hear Keynote Speakers for which you normally would pay hundreds of dollars to attend
  • The dinners are always superb fellowship events. The Saturday Night dinner is always very vibrant; this year they have a top notch Jazz & Swing band.
  • You learn a couple of things about Rotary which you may not have known before

FROM OUR LAST MEETING 29 JANUARY 2019

Approximately 35 members, guests and visiting Rotarians from Melbourne enjoyed the exclusive third level balcony view of the ocean whilst enjoying much needed refreshments.
At six PM the meeting was called to order and Vice President Neil Jones took the floor in Pauline Armstrong’s absence. He advised that Pauline had a family medical issue with a grandchild necessitating her absence tonight. Our best wishes for a positive outcome are extended to Pauline and her family.
Bruce Kuhn took the floor and introduced the gathering to Geoff Bignall who is a long-time member of the Kurrawa club and Surfers Paradise Rotarian.
Geoff proceeded to give us the history of the organisation from the beginning in the 1950’s until today. What started out as the Lennon’s Broadbeach Surf Lifesaving Club thru various name changes has ended up as the Kurrawa Surf lifesaving Club. The club's first purpose-built clubhouse was officially opened on the 27/10/1963 and over the years had many renovations including one after fire ravaged the lower level. The current building was finally opened on the 30th of November 2017. After thanking Geoff for his lesson in the Club’s history we adjourned to the dining room for a hearty Dinner and fellowship.
After Dinner we were assembled in the lower level and were introduced to Club Captain Andrew Liner. Andrew escorted the group to the Nippers room and also the educational area where recruits learn resuscitation techniques and first aid. We then inspected the shift office and the medical facility moving onto the rescue boat storage area. Next came the cavernous basement area where storage for vehicles, rescue paddle boards, surf skis, fork lift, and the beach trailer which is used at weekends and holiday periods. All the while Andrew kept the narrative going informing us of the importance of each area. Finally, we went to the gym area which is fully equipped at a cost in excess of 50k.
Our tour ended there and our thanks to Andrew were conveyed by Neil and the entire group.
We must also extend our congratulations to Bruce and other members who made this evening possible.

I'm passing this on because it worked for me today. A Dr. on TV said to have inner peace we should always finish things we start and we all could use more calm in our lives.
