Last Tuesday we gathered intimately at the Hotel, to hear from our RYLA recipient, Elhayna Jacob.  It was encouraging to hear the positives that Elhayna relayed regarding the RYLA experience.  She has a very life interesting story, having been an exchange student to Austria, with a short stint in a Ireland as part of that journey, studying commercial interior design and set to graduate this year.  It was a rewarding experience for Elhayna, as it was for the club to be able to facilitate her attendance.
 
The new club van is due shortly, a wonderful asset that will stand the club and scooter project in good stead for many years. 
 
Surfers Sunrise Rotary are having a free Breakfast Meeting at the Project Shed at Arundel this Wednesday to witness the progress of the Vanuatu Health Centre, all members are invited. The club has contributed significant time and funds to the Project and it would be great to see lots of members there if possible.  
A reminder that we aren’t meeting next Tuesday, rather the club event for the week is the Cluster 7 Rotary Baton Relay on Friday the 16. Broadwater Southport is managing the day’s events and has requested that we staff a sausage sizzle BBQ at the Kokoda Memorial Wall in Cascade Gardens.  Channel 9 will do a live cross during their news.
Bunnings’s have allocated us three sizzles between now and June, the first being on Saturday 24 April.  Please volunteer to Ray if you can assist, we need two shifts of four from 7am and 11am.

District 9640 Conference 
 
On Saturday 15th May 2021, our District 9640 will hold its Conference at Twin Towns Conference Centre.  In view of the COVID situation, the format is a one day event. This brings the cost down to just $60.00 per head ($20 for Rotaractors and $10 for Interactors) which includes morning tea and Lunch. 
 
Among the hugely interesting guest speakers is Dr Jessie Harman (pictured right) the first female Rotary International Director from Australia.  Click here for more information and to book.

FROM OUR LAST MEETING TUESDAY 06 APRIL 2021

This was the smallest attendance I can recall in my time in the club but whilst the quantity was low the quality was high,
In view of the small number attending the venue was switched to the Bistro area and attendees were able to select their own meal from the extensive Bistro menu.
It was very much a fellowship evening with everyone seated at the one table and the usual formalities were set aside.
 
After dinner we moved to a quiet corner of the sports bar where President Les introduced our Club's RYLA attendee, Ehlayna Jacob.
Ehlayna, aged 21 is currently at University studying Commercial Interior Design and is a former Rotary Youth Exchange Student having spent her gap year in Austria.
RYLA participants were down in number this year but this did not lessen the experience for the attendees aged from 19 to 27. Apart from wonderful experiences and new friendships Ehlayna's greatest take away was overcoming her procrastination.
After showing a video presentation of aspects of the RYLA camp, Ehlayna answered questions and thanked the club for providing her with the opportunity.
 
President Les presented Ehlayna with our club glass and closed the meeting at 7.50pm.
