Very enjoyable evening in the company of our special guest Cr. Paul Taylor was had last Tuesday.
Cr.Paul kept us informed and updated us with on the Commonwealth games organisations as well other issues that may affect us around Broadbeach.
Admin Director Bob updated us on alternate venue arrangements. After meeting with the Crowne Food and Beverage manager, Bob informed us that the hotel was not prepared to negotiate down on attendance numbers and it is now becoming obvious that we as a club can no longer afford to pay the weekly excess fee. I appreciated Denis O’Brien’s input and comments which were invaluable and one we should be considering. Cr. Paul Taylor also confirmed that the Kurrawa Surf Club will not be ready until end of November.
Thank you to those who have come forward with their valuable suggestions. Our thanks go to Bob and Secretary Tony for their efforts in trying to negotiate a suitable venue on our behalf.
This week I also attended a Group 7 Cluster Meeting. It was hosted by the Rotary Club of Broadbeach at the HUB. The meeting was Chaired by Assistant Governor David Baguley and attended by Presidents from Surfers Paradise, Surfers Sunrise, Broadwater, Gold Coast, Mermaid Beach and Broadbeach.
None of the Presidents had ever visited the Hub. I am pleased to report that the Presidents were extremely impressed with what we have at the Hub and somewhat envious about the facilities. They have all indicated that at some point in the near future they will be contacting Hub Committee to make arrangements for their meetings seminars and functions.
Each President shared great ideas, all had similar issues and the opportunities that were raised resulted in very positive outcomes. The Presidents were happy to buddy up in projects and to share the workload in fundraising as well as to raise the profile of Rotary to attract new members. Further our Alzheimer’s Project was very well supported by all.
I look forward to enjoying a great social BBQ this coming Tuesday at the Hub catered by Grahame Werrell and Noel Hodges.

SECRETARY REPORT - Tony Lewis
Not a lot to report this week. However, I must reiterate what President Alain and Administration Director Bob said at last weeks meeting.
As Bob stated, the Crowne Plaza Hotel will not reduce our minimum numbers to under 25. There are several reasons why we are not meeting this minimum number of attendees each week including members travelling, illness, reduction in membership numbers etc. However, to date this has created a large debt for the Club. As Alain and Bob advised, we have been actively looking for another venue with at least 1 appearing to be suitable for us to relocate. Your input into this issue would be greatly appreciated.
ALMONER REPORT - Bob Jordan
Cec is out and about although still taking it easy. No date set for his return to Rotary.
David called on Keith last week and he is still going as well as can be expected.
Bon voyage to Neil & Christine who leave for London on Wednesday.
In all our trips to India travel arrangements have gone amazingly reliably as planned. However I can remember one occasion where the element of adventure aligned to create what turned out to be a comical set of circumstances.
Our plan was to depart Madras, (now called Chennai) for Goa with a transit stop In Bangalore now called Bengalu. We departed Chennai on time and arrived in Bangalore to be greeted by our local travel representative as usual. He advised us that due to some minor political demonstrations the Goa Airport was currently closed to all incoming flights. I told our representative that in this case we would prefer to travel to Mumbai our next destination. He replied “that the flight to Mumbai had left with no further flights today”, available. Ok time for plan B I thought. So now we will need to stay here in Bangalore before travelling on to Mumbai. Sorry all the hotels in Bangalore are full due to an annual racing event. By this time it was lunch time and our Group need to relax and eat, so I said. Ok we will go to the West End Hotel to relax, have lunch and acertain our next move. “Sorry all the Taxis are unavailable due to the local races. This now was starting to become a small challenge. Somehow we managed to rustle up 3 private cars and arrived at the West End Hotel, met the Manager who advised us that, all our Travel Agent was telling was true. Shanti then asked him, “if the Indian Prime Minister was coming where would you put him. Oh he replied in the Presidential suite of course. Ok Shanti said we will stay there. This suite was like a 2 bedroom house in size so the girls got to share the bedrooms and boys the lounge and hallways and it became the talk of the town. “westerners engage in orgy in Presidential suite”.

My gifts will leave a lasting legacy
Monica Saville, Rotary Club of Epping, New South Wales, Australia
Monica Saville is a polio survivor and a trustee with the Australian Rotary Foundation Trust.
Australia hasn’t seen a new case of locally acquired polio in decades, but survivors like Monica Saville, who contracted the virus at age 11, haven’t forgotten the disease. Now a trustee with the Australian Rotary Foundation Trust, she speaks at conferences and Rotary institutes about how to support the campaign to end polio and other Foundation programs.“When I learned that Rotary’s goal was to eradicate this debilitating disease, I contributed financially to the cause,” says the former teacher. “As a polio survivor, however, I also feel a great need to increase awareness among Rotary members and the general public and motivate them to support our efforts.” She’s currently organizing a fundraising dinner for two Australian districts in honor of The Rotary Foundation’s centennial, and she’s encouraging Rotary members and their partners to consider the Foundation in their wills, as she and her husband, Geoff, have done. “Leaving a legacy to promote a better world beyond our lifetimes is the logical extension to our combined nearly 60 years of Rotary service,” says Saville, who has been recognized with a Medal of the Order of Australia for her work with Rotary.
We can all help Rotary's worldwide work by contributing to The Rotary Foundation - talk to Foundation Director, Pauline.
WEEKLY LAUGHS
A Missouri farmer passed away and left 17 mules to his three sons. The instructions left in the will said that the oldest boy was to get one-half, the second oldest one-third, and the youngest one-ninth. The three sons, recognizing the difficulty of dividing 17 mules into these fractions, began to argue.
Their uncle heard about the argument, hitched up his mule and drove out to settle the matter. He added his mule to the 17, making 18. The oldest therefore got one-half, or nine, the second oldest got one-third, or six, and the youngest son got one-ninth, or two. Adding up 9, 6 and 2 equals 17. The uncle, having settled the argument, hitched up his mule and drove home.

My father was completely lost in the kitchen and never ate unless someone prepared a meal for him. When Mother was ill, however, he volunteered to go to the supermarket for her. She sent him off with a carefully numbered list of seven items.
Dad returned shortly, very proud of himself, and proceeded to unpack the grocery bags. He had one bag of sugar, two dozen eggs, three hams, four boxes of detergent, five boxes of crackers, six eggplants, and seven green peppers.

An old lady phoned the hospital and asked if she could check on a patient.
“I can do that for you,” said the operator. “What’s the name and room number?”
“Bettie Mahoney, room 309,” said the woman.
After placing the woman on hold for a few minutes, the operator returned.
“I have good news! Her nurse just told me that Bettie is doing very well and will be discharged on Tuesday.”
“That’s wonderful!” said the woman. “I was so worried. Thank you for your help.”
“Not a problem,” said the operator. “Is Bettie your daughter?”
“No,” said the woman. “I’m Bettie in room 309. No one tells me anything.”
