Happy Australia Day

At the time of writing this report I am in seat 26A 33,000 metres above Australia on my way to Victoria.

On Tuesday we had the pleasure of welcoming our 4 guests from RTYS. It was very refreshing to hear what those young people had to say about their experiences at RYTS. They were all very grateful of the support from the BBRC for providing them with an opportunity to attend. The experience gained was invaluable and life changing . So much for their enthusiasm, they are willing to become ambassadors at their respective schools and workplace in encouraging their peers to attend future events. Thank you to Youth Director Noel for supporting

Vice President Neil Jones’s presentation about his Golden Milling enterprise was enthralling and thoroughly enjoyed by all. We look forward to the next chapter.

Next Tuesday we are at the Hub where we will be hosting the Southport Rotary Club together with a guest speaker on the Malaria project. It will be a social evening and I look forward to your attendance and enjoying your company.

Update on Commonwealth Games

Last week AG David Baguley & I had a meeting with Incognitus to discuss D9640 providing the Housekeeping Services at the Commonwealth Games Village. David has compiled a list of 250 people to provide 25 teams of 5 for the period 4 -14 April. This volunteer number will service only one third of the village. it will inject over $300,000 into our district for distribution to charities. Unfortunately we have had very few Rotarians register but at least we will be the coordinator for Rotary & the other organisations. The handover of the cheque will be at the Countdown Clock at Surfers Paradise Beach (more details to follow) on 16 April & a lot of publicity is anticipated in coordination with our PR Chair, Andy Rajapakse. Security clearances have been done & most helpers would have an email by now advising the next stage of registration. Please convey my thanks to those Rotarians who volunteered.

Membership

December saw our net gain plummet to 8 since 1 July 2017 to give 1200 members in our district, down from 1229 in November but up from 1192 in July. We are the 15th smallest district for membership in Australia out of 21 districts.

Redistricting

I have had a couple of queries on redistricting. Questions (Q) & answers (A) following:-

Q. What powers would a CEO have?

A. It is up to each district as to whether they appoint a CEO or not. In this instance a CEO is perceived as a part time secretary / treasurer who would be paid if the work load becomes too great. Our district leadership team considered appointing a CEO last year but rejected the idea.

Q. What responsibilities will remain with the clubs & what will no longer be their task / problem?

A. There will be no change to the way clubs operate as they do now.

Changes in Meetings

RC Southport is now meeting on the 1st & 3rd Tuesdays of the month at a new venue - Ferry Road Tavern, Ferry Rd., Southport.

MEMBER ANECDOTES

NANCY SMITH

Moving to the other side of the world challenges were to be expected. But, from one English speaking country to another the least of my worries was going to be the language. Then I moved to Queensland and my education began!

Shortly after settling here I set some goals, one was to drive our oversized new SUV on the “wrong” (to me) side of the road, and navigate roundabouts which were a completely foreign concept. My incentive to hop into the right side of the vehicle was to find a tennis club. I looked up Emerald Lakes, and without the benefit of a sat nav negotiated my way which included the Ross Street roundabout at rush hour. Arriving at the club, with my hands glued to the steering wheel I looked for some sign of tennis. In the distance I saw a woman carrying a racket and thought that my problems were over.

I approached her with my very cultured Canadian accent and asked if the tennis courts were nearby.

She looked at me and responded “yeahh (read that with a broad Queensland accent), it’s up that back, ask for John, he’s a bit crook but he comes good” Then she turned and walked away.

Translation please??

Fifteen years later I am a fair dinkum aussie (sort of ) and still get a laugh from that early encounter with a local!

Joint Meeting with Southport at The Hub

Southport Rotary Club members will be joining us for a joint evening on Tuesday 30 January at the Broadbeach Rotary Hub.

Steve Carroll Rotarians Against Malaria - RAM chairman for District 9670 will be joining us & will provide a short talk on Malaria. Harold Busch will report on our Alzeimers project and some of our mobility scooters will be on display.

2018-19 Rotary International Theme Announced

Rotary International President-elect Barry Rassin laid out his vision for the future of the organization at the International Assembly, calling on leaders to work for a sustainable future and to inspire Rotarians and the community at large.

Rassin, a member of the Rotary Club of East Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas, unveiled the 2018-19 presidential theme, Be the Inspiration, to incoming district governors at Rotary’s International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA. “I want you to inspire in your clubs, your Rotarians, that desire for something greater. The drive to do more, to be more, to create something that will live beyond each of us.”

TRF RECEIVES HIGHEST RATING FROM CHARITY NAVIGATOR

For the 10th consecutive year, The Rotary Foundation has received the highest rating — four stars — from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities in the U.S.
In the most recent ratings, the Foundation earned the maximum of 100 points for demonstrating both strong finan-cial health and commitment to accountability and transparency.
In a letter to the Foundation, Charity Navigator notes that "only 1 percent of the charities we evaluate have re-ceived at least 10 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that The Rotary Foundation outperforms other charities in America. This exceptional designation from Charity Navigator sets The Rotary Foundation apart from its peers and demonstrates to the public its trustworthiness."
The rating reflects Charity Navigator's assessment of how the Foundation uses donations, sustains its programs and services, and practices good governance and openness.

Youth Visitors Presentation:

Codi Scheafer, Kay Gordon, Dion Drummond and Marc Starret addressed the meeting on their experience and value they had received attending Rotary Youth Programs with specific reference to the recent Rotary Youth Transition Seminar.

These programs were spoken of in a beneficial and strong manner in personnel Development and enhancing fellowship

Thanks to Noel Hodges for the good work he does with youth in schools and for inviting the group to our meeting

Guest Speaker Neil Jones:

Neil talked to a PowerPoint presentation regarding his family involvement in a toll gold milling operation in Kalgoorlie, WA.

Kalgoorlie, 600 km east of Perth was established in 1893 when Paddy Hannan found gold in the area.Population is a little over 40k today but peaked at 200,000 at the height of the gold rush.

The key driver of the local economy is gold mining and in particular the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines super pit.

This open cut mine right on the edge of the city is 3.6km long, 1.6km wide and almost 600m deep. 15 million tonnes of ore are mined each year and to date 58 million ounces of gold have been recovered.

Neil's involvement is with the Lakewood mill just 10km from the centre of Kalgoorlie.

Customers bring their ore to the mill for processing with a toll fee per tonne. The mill operates 24/7 with a nominal capacity of 100 tonnes per hour - there are many variables.

The ore is crushed and fed into the ball mill from where it moves to a gravity circuit. Gold concentrate isolated through this process passes through an acacia reactor, an electrowinning process and eventually smelting. The balance of the material then passes through cyclone classification (with any solids returned to the ball mill) and the slurry to the leach circuit. in this process the gold is leached into solution and is simultaneously absorbed into coarse granules of activated carbon. The loaded carbon is ultimately transferred for stripping and the output from both processes is finally smelted and poured into molds to produce ingots. The ingots are transferred to the Perth Mint for smelting and eventual payment.

The remaining slurry is then transferred to on site tailings dams.

Neil outlined that the raw material varies but 3 grams of gold per tonne is very viable at today's gold price which is well above A$1,600. There is 31.1 grams to a troy ounce of gold so at 3 grams per tonne it requires 10t of ore to recover one ounce of gold.

Neil concluded by emphasising this is a very good business from a cash flow point of view as control of the processed gold remains with the toll miller who simply deducts toll milling costs from the proceeds before passing on the balance to the customer (ie. no delayed payment or bad debts).

President Alain in closing the meeting thanked every one for their attendance and Neil Jones for his very good presentation.
