I am impressed with the enthusiasm shown by PE Graham who is preparing to take on the role of President in July. At the last meeting he outlined the project he wishes to pursue in his year. The application for a grant has to be in by the end of April which is why he flagged it early. For those who missed it. it is a project involving the Mauna hospital on the Island of Pentecost in Vanuatu. The new hospital has been built by the islanders themselves, but they need a building to house a pathology unit. Currently all pathology has to be sent away and can take days to get results. They also need a water storage tank.

The Rotary clubs of Surfers Sunrise and Gold Coast are also on board and Graham may even approach Tauranga. Graham has the medical contacts obviously so this could be a great project. I will be there in Vanuatu helping out if the opportunity arises!

I also enjoyed the presentation from Professor Belinda Beck on the research she is conducting on osteoporosis. The team is still looking for volunteers so if you know any ladies over 60 with concerns re bone mass and density encourage them to join the group. The website is www.griffith.edu.au/vibmor.

Next week is our casual night at the Hub. These are always great. I am going to bring a calibrated breathalyser so if anyone would like to know what their reading is before they leave I can do it for a $1 donation. All readings of course are confidential.

In the year of 2002 and 2004 I participated in a fantastic fund raising challenge organised by the Rotary Club of Engadine, NSW.

The Sydney to Surfers Charity Bike Ride is an initiative of and continues to be fully run by the Rotary Club of Engadine with thanks to its sponsor Macsim Fasteners. Since the inaugural ride back in 1999, the Rotary Club of Engadine, has supported Fr Chris Riley's " Youth Off the Street Program “and has donated in excess $3 million from funds raised over the past 18 years.

The Ride was the brainchild of Rotary member, Ken “Robbo” Robinson who was the inspiration and driving force behind its continued success for many years. Sadly, Robbo passed away in 2016.

Usually around late April early May the ride is an exciting 7 day, 900 kilometre cycling event dedicated to raising funds for YOTS.

Over 150 enthusiastic bike riders from over various states participated supported by a crew of 50 volunteers and logistic support.

The ride departs on a Saturday morning at Hornsby and concludes the following Saturday on the Gold Coast. We travel on public roads including local regional town, country roads through Sydney’s Central Coast, the beautiful Lake Macquarie and Hunter region, the scenic mid-north coast, the magnificent Coffs Coast and hinterland, the Northern Rivers region and finally cruise along the beaches of the Tweed and Gold Coasts.

Rotary works closely with the NSW Police Force to ensure that the ride is conducted in the safest way possible and each ride ‘pack’ is accompanied by a dedicated support vehicle.

There is an entry fee of $1500 per rider and this includes overnight accommodation at Caravan and Tents sites, all meals, luggage transfers, support vehicle and a fantastic time. ( Alcohol consumption although not included but a must have in regional pubs and clubs particularly at resting time). Each rider also has an opportunity to raise funds from their local community or businesses to support the work of Fr Chris Riley.

Dinner is usually sponsored by the local Rotary Club of each town either with a BBQ at the Caravan site or a meal at the local Golf or RSL Club which also contributes a donation towards the project.

Riders are placed in packs based on their level of fitness and ability to average 100 klms per day. The various packs would leave the overnight site after packing tents and completing breakfast at around 7.30 followed at half hour intervals by others and the dedicated group including yours truly would be the last to leave and the first to arrive at our afternoon destination. First pack to arrive would usually select the best camp site for the night, followed by a swim ,bit of rest and refreshments which was never lacking after a long day.

A fantastic time was had by all. Met great Rotarians/ non Rotarians along the way together with some long lasting friendships. The most satisfying part of the trip was to have a different under privileged kid currently cared for by YOTS visiting the site daily to tell of their stories and some if game enough were encouraged to ride with a group.

Youth Off The Streets supports chronically homeless and drug addicted young Australians as they work to turn their lives around. It is their goal that these young people will leave their care drug free, with a high school education, living skills and a full or part time job in hand. There is simply no better cause.

Notification of Nominee for District 9620 Governor 2021-22
The District Nominating Committee for the District Governor for Rotary District 9620 interviewed eligible candidates for the position of District Governor of our new District 9620 on Saturday 16 March 2019.
The decision reached at the meeting is that DG Wendy Protheroe of the Rotary Club of Brisbane High Rise has been selected as our Governor for the Rotary Year 2021-22 and as per Rotary International Bylaw 14:020:6 in the Manual of Procedure, I hereby advise all clubs in our District of the selected candidate.

I confirm that prior to our decision we obtained confirmation from the Rotary International South Pacific and Philippines Office that ‘there is no statement in the RI Bylaws or the Code of Policy excluding a PDG or sitting DG to be nominated or selected as a DG again’

Bylaw 14.020.8 provides for “Challenging Candidates” who must have been duly suggested to the Nominating Committee. Accordingly I advise that any challenge must be received by the Chair DG Nominating Committee P O Box 810 North Lakes Qld 4509 or email jnblane@bigpond.net.au no later than 17.00 (5.00pm) on Tuesday 2 April 2019, and must comply with the procedural requirements specified in the Rotary International Bylaws.

If there is no Challenging Candidate Wendy Protheroe shall be declared to be our District 9620 Governor for 2021-22.

Meeting opened by Sergeant Les Bulluss who invited Malcolm Daviess to propose a toast.

Given the Mosque shooting in Christchurch New Zealand – Malcolm proposed a Minutes Silence for the victims, survivors and frontline personnel affected by this attack. The club members present observed the Minutes Silence.

President Pauline welcomed our Guest Speaker Professor Doctor Belinda Beck, Honorary Member Ian Cowen and Members Guests Pat Curr, Roslyn Tomlinson and Edwina Hutchison.

President Pauline also announced the successful return of the Club Van which has been refurbished thanks to the club’s Insurer after the theft and successful recovery.

Secretary Tony advised that the initial District Governor for District 9620 for the period 2021/2022 is DG Wendy Protheroe from the Rotary Club of Brisbane High Rise. Tony further advised that he will be undertaking an update of the Membership details and requested that members provide any updates as a matter of priority.

Bob Jordan advised that there was a late call up to conduct a Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings Molendinar on Sunday 17 March and thanked the members who were able to assist and it was a successful day with around $1200 being taken and the net profit will be shared with Broadbeach Inner Wheel Club, whose members assisted on the day. Also looking for members to assist with a Sausage Sizzle on Easter Saturday 20 April 2019.

Graham Sivyer advised that the Club Changeover Dinner is to be held on 25 June 2019 and further that the District Assembly will be held on 2 June 2019 at Mullumbimby for members of the incoming Board. Graham also advised of a possible District Grant Project involving a Hospital on Pentecost Island Vanuatu.

Sergeant Les selected Bob Jordan and Denis O’Brien as Bunyips who tried to extract as much from members as possible. Notable fines were – Russ – taken family members to the Western Front including the celebration of Anzac day within the battlefields.

A further fine was that Uwe was wearing a clean white singlet – but did not actually have a singlet on.

Raffle was won by Les Bulluss who donated the wine to Guest Speaker Belinda.

Heads and Tails was won by Peter Tomlinson (who left the wine at the venue).

President Pauline introduced Guest Speaker Professor Doctor Belinda Beck on the Topic of Osteoporosis – The Whys and Wherefores.

Major points were:

Bone mass varies across our life and in particular the bone mass of women.

Those people with Osteoporosis are more likely to suffer bone fractures.

Common fractures are – femur – wrist and lumbar spine (mainly occurring from falls) which equate to a Quality of Life issue.

Hip fracture after the age of 90 will probably result in death.

Genes play a major role in determining bone mass.

We can reduce risk through medication, good calcium sources and good Vitamin D sources.

The latest project is titled VIBMOR and has 430 participants which involve a 9 month study and a 12 month follow-up. It is noted that vibration plate devise are good for bones.

Belinda then fielded a number of questions from members and President Pauline provided a vote of thanks and made a Guest Speaker presentation to Belinda.
