Presidents Message

Fellow Rotarians & Friends,

We enjoyed a relaxed April Fellowship Meeting with 17 in attendance. It was great to welcome Edwina Hutchison as a Guest as well as past members Ray Milton and Peter Sutton. Honorary member Uwe was also in attendance.

It was another great meal prepared by Chef Kouma, which was again enjoyed by all. Thank you to Kouma for making allowances for our various food allergies.

The good news is at our next meeting – Tuesday 5 May 2026 we will induct Ray as a returning member of our club – it will be great to have Ray back as a member again.

While thinking about members, can we please spare some thoughts for Neil Jones as he goes through some not so nice treatment. Keep well Neil.

On the serious side – following an Audit of The Hub by Gold Coast City Council, a number of items have been identified as having to be rectified, which will require outside contractors. As a part of this Audit, Harold Busch provided a Fire Awareness session, which included the use of a Fire Extinguisher and Fire Blanket. Thanks, Harold for making sure that we stay safe.

Lucky Door winners were Robert Thomson and Bill Rex – congratulations.

number of members are off to the Tri District Conference at Royal Pines from 1 to 3 May 2026, with Jim Hawkins being our club representative at the Business Session. Following the recent receipt of the redistricting advice from Rotary International, this may be a late and interesting topic for discission at the conference. It is worth noting that it appears that District 9640 is proposed to be split along the State Boundaries, with 3 Districts in NSW and 1 for all of Queensland being suggested. This will make for an interesting District Conference in the future!

Thank you to members for assisting with the Sausage Sizzles, Scooters, Hub Cleaning and Containers for Change – this assistance is greatly appreciated.

Just a reminder that at our meeting on 5 May 2026 we will induct Ray Milton back into the club.

Yours In Rotary Service,

Neil

Second smaller image to the right: European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti floats in the International Space Station next for the floating banner for her Rotary club in Germany.
Excited about the Artemis flight around the moon?
You’ll love this Rotarian astronaut’s story.
From the archive: Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti dreamed of space travel as a kid in the Italian Alps, was chosen among 8,412 other qualified applicants for the European Space Agency, and made two trips to the International Space Station. Floating inside the research vessel, she made a video call to her Rotary club in Germany. Read: A Rotarian astronaut lives her out-of-this-world dreams.

Recommitting to the cause, together

In February, member states of the World Health Organization reaffirmed their collective commitment to finishing polio eradication. Coming after the global pledging event in Abu Dhabi in December, a meeting of WHO’s leaders from around the globe reinforced a clear message: The world remains united behind the goal of a polio-free future. Partners in the effort, including Rotary International, were recognized for their ongoing work in advocacy and community engagement.

The Four-Way Test and its enduring legacy
For almost a century, Rotary members have been using The Four-Way Test as an ethical guide and moral compass. Herbert Taylor penned the test’s four questions in 1932 to help turn his company around during the Great Depression. In a blog post for Rotary 360, Haresh L. Ramchandani, chair of Rotary International’s Membership Growth Committee, breaks down the test’s four parts and tells why it’s still relevant.

Fortnightly Laughs

I finally know why they call me a grown up:
I groan every time I get up!

Baby changing rooms are a massive hoax:
The parents always come back with the same baby!
