Fellow Rotarians and friends

It was lovely to hear from Ros Byrne last week regarding Domestic and Family Violence, particularly the impact upon vulnerable women and children.  As I said on the night, our speakers are generally good news stories, but the world isn’t always good news, so the honesty and passion of Ros was an honour to listen to.

As I write, the Bunnings sizzlers are sizzling on a cracker day weather wise at Bunnings   Thanks to all who have volunteered, particularly Ros, Will and Edwina.  Special mention to Ray and Noel P who pulled double shifts. Service above Self in practice, a great example of Rotary in Action. I called past whilst working and was treated to what I guarantee was the best sausage sangers I will eat today!

Although I couldn’t attend, I’ve been told that the district conference was entertaining and well received.  I look forward to hearing more about it from the many members who were able to attend.

We’re not meeting this week, our next gathering is the Hub on the 25th.  There will be trivia on the night, catering by Noel and Grahame.  The solar grant for the Hub from GCCC is for $7500, however given the time lapse in applying for the grant and being successful, the installation costs have gone up.  The board decided at the last meeting that the profits from the Hub night will go to offset the additional costs of installation.

Last week I became aware that an additional funding was being requested from the Club this year towards the Pentecost Project, with a further amount of $5000 being sought from each of the three clubs directly involved to the Rotary Foundation. This will result in the District providing a further contribution of  US$11,259 district designated funds towards the global grant which in turn will attract matching funds from the World Fund. This will mean the global grant of  US$53,500 being sought to fit out and equip the flat pack building will now be fully funded.  Many thanks to Neil Jones who was able to explain the mechanics behind that to the board and suggest a way forward, as that amount had not been budgeted for.  Thank you to those members who have made contributions to the Foundation to enable that funding to be forthcoming.

Until next week.

Yours in Rotary.

Les

Youth Service Month is a special time in Rotary. Throughout the month of May, members of Rotary clubs, Rotaract, Interact, and those involved in Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) and Rotary Youth Exchange celebrate the opportunities Rotary provides to connect, grow through service, develop leadership skills, mentor or be mentored, and have fun.

Although COVID has curtailed some of our youth activities it should not prevent us from celebrating Youth Service Month nor dampen our enthusiasm, excitement, and gratitude for these programs and the volunteers who make them possible.

 Contributions to The Rotary Foundation

Help support our Pentecost Island Project

As mentioned elsewhere in this bulletin, your contributions to The Rotary Foundation this month will help us to secure additional district designated funds for the project global grant application to fit out and equip the X-ray and Pathology building provided at Mauna Health Centre in partnership with Gold Coast and Surfers Sunrise Rotary Clubs.

Members can assist by making a personal contribution to The Rotary Foundation which is tax deductible and whilst any amount is most welcome, a contribution of $100 qualifies you as a Centurion Member whilst a $130 will qualify you as a Sustaining Member (US$100).

It is pleasing to advise that already $3,400 has been contributed and with the Board commitment of $2,500 we have already exceeded the required $5,000 but we all know that the Foundation does good in the world and every contribution is valued.

Make your contribution now direct to Rotary Club of Broadbeach Inc. Administration account BSB 034 637 account number 201534.  Don't forget to add your name and if you would prefer that your donation go to PolioPlus, please add Polio after your name.

Neil Jones reported on the Pentecost Project:
A  Rotary Foundation global grant is being sought for to fit out the clinic with a Portable X-ray machine etc. Due to upcoming changes in Global Grant funding the DG suggested that each of the three Clubs involved should each put in $5000 to the Foundation and District would provide equivalent District Designated Funds to support the the grant which in turn would attract matching funds from the Foundation World Fund. Neil & Les suggested that members may like to donate $100 (or whatever they are comfortable with) to help make up the $5000.

Andrew McTaggart made three draws of the Silver Circle to make up for the weeks missed. Lucky winners were;

President Les introduced the Guest Speaker Ros Byrne. Ros gave an passionate talk about the prevalence and devastation of Domestic Violence. Ros, as a Family Court Solicitor, and has worked closely with victims for 25 years. and has found it challenging, draining and disappointing the way mainly women are treated by men. She drew on her personal experience with clients, and her speech was emotional as she described the emotional toll on her. She emphasised that  there is a need to educate young men and boys to respect women and to treat them with respect. This has to start in the family and at school. We have an obligation to stop this plague of Domestic Violence and coercive control.

President Les thanked Ros for her talk and presented her with a token from the members.

WEEKLY LAUGHS

"How come when you mix water and flour together you get glue... and then you add eggs and sugar and you get cake? Where does the glue go?" --- Rita Rudner
-----------------------------------

The jockey was riding the favourite at a race meeting, and was well ahead of the field. His horse rounded the final corner, when suddenly the jockey was hit on the head by a turkey and a string of sausages.
He managed to keep control of his mount and pulled back into the lead, only to be struck by a box of Christmas crackers and a dozen mince pies as he went over the last fence.
With great skill he managed to steer the horse to the front of the field once more when, on the run in, he was struck on the head by a bottle of sherry and a Christmas pudding. Thus distracted, he succeeded in coming only second.
He immediately went to the race stewards to complain that he had been seriously hampered.
