Fellow Rotarians and Friends,

It was pleasing to see so many guests at this week’s meeting to hear Darren Taylor update us on the city’s status. Judging by the number of questions it was very popular and we will invite him back in the future.

We were sorry to hear that Russ had a fall and a short stay in hospital. We wish him the best and look forward to seeing him at a meeting in the near future.

From what I hear Nasser had an adverse reaction to a vaccine but am informed that he has recovered and we hope to see him soon.

This week is at the Hub and will be a little less formal. New regulations have dictated that we need to introduce a QR Code for the location and the club has applied for one. We are hopeful it will be in place for Tuesday night however, if not, we will resort to a manual login.

2021-22 Membership Subscriptions

The Board has set the membership subscription for 2021-22 at $270 and invoices were emailed to all members on 5 July.

Payment is now overdue and should be made by direct credit to Rotary Club of Broadbeach Inc Administration Account BSB 034-637 Account number 201534 or to Treasurer Neil at the weekly meeting by cash/cheque/EFTPOS.

To date 25 of 31 members have paid - thank you.

SECRETARY REPORT - Tony Lewis.

Tony is recovering from hip replacement surgery last Tuesday.

ALMONER REPORT - Bob Jordan

A few on the sick and wounded this week.

Russ had a spell in hospital after apparently tripping over garbage, (didn’t want to know details so didn’t ask)
Spoke to Ian Cowen this morning who advises he is feeling well and hopes to get to the Hub next Tuesday
Tony is still in Pindarra recovering from a hip replacement and hopes to be out at the weekend.
John Monks goes to Wesley in Brisbane this week for a procedure, good luck John.

Our District is conducting a number of Q&A sessions (in lieu of the usual District Training Assembly). All sessions start at 09:00 for 09:30 am start and are expected to conclude by 2:00 pm, with social time afterward.

Price of $20.00 includes a light lunch. The Club will reimburse this cost for members wishing to attend.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about effective project planning and creating a vibrant and inclusive Club through membership retention with members of the District Leadership team.

There will also be plenty of opportunities to discuss matters raised by the on-line District Assembly presentations.

FROM OUR MEETING ON 20 JULY 2021

Sergeant Bill Waller opened the meeting and invited Peter Tomlinson to present the Toast. Peter reminded us of the 34 000 surf lifesavers that keep our beaches safe and lead the Toast.

Bill introduced Present Peter to his first Official Dinner Meeting, who welcomed everyone, including the guests:Kylie, Charlotte and Chelsie Cram from New Zealand, Kris Gunawardana, Normie Rowe and Cr Darren Taylor.

The Treasurer thanked all who had paid their fees and reminded the others that they are now due.

Noel made a request / suggestion that a previous program of the Club should be revisited of a literacy program at Benowa High. Neil Jones stated that the proceeds from the meeting at the Hub next week should go towards this initiative. Peter put it to the meeting and it was carried.

The Raffle was won by Jim Hawkins Granddaughter; Head & Tails by Roslyn Tomlinson.

Guest Speaker, Cr Darren Taylor,a successful small business operator, presented the opportunities that confronts his Division. Discussed were: the Oceanway, homelessness, unlimited high density living, and that 150 000 more people will reside here within10 years. Rental prices are high and stock is limited. Youth crime is a challenge. He sees positive outcomes with the support of the homeless by the Public Liaison Officer.

Darren sees the Oceanway as a great assett. Covid has lead to an advantage for the city in regards to music, development and creating businesses. Darren likes to get out and about and get "dirty" and be proactive.

Jim Hawkins thanked the Guest Speaker.

Normie Rowe made a suggestion that the city should recognise all the servicemen & women from all the conflicts they have been involved in. This could be in the form of a "Welcome Home " Parade and other initiatives. This was well received by the members.

President Peter closed the Meeting and reminded members that next week would be at the Hub.
