A small group of 13 members and guest speaker Al Mitchell enjoyed another fine meal at The Hub.
Acting Sergeant Neil J opened proceedings, introduced guest speaker Al and called upon Vice President Pauline (standing in for President Andrew who is recovering from a bout of shingles) who welcomed all in attendance.
Pauline won the raffle and Guest Speaker Al took out Heads and Tails.
Neil B reported that considerable used tablet sachets had already been collected and urged all members not to throw them in the bin but to save them and bring them to the Hub for recycling through a DIK project.
Pauline then introduced Guest Speaker Al Mitchell, Business Development Manager, LIVIN.
Al delivered a shortened version of LIVINWell, a 45 minute mental health educational program building on LIVIN's mantra that "it aint weak to speak". The program aims to break the stigma of mental health, enhance self-efficacy (both helping yourself and helping others) and encourage help-seeking.
The presentation covered:
- an overview of LIVIN, including an inspiring video explaining LIVIN's origins
- conversations to drive stigma reduction
-information on warning signs and symptons of mental health challenges
-Practical strategies to help those around you who might be struggling
-Effective strategies to help yourself 9coping strategies/stress management strategies)
-Information on organisations who can provide professional help
Surprisingly 1 in 2 Aussies experience mental health problems and 9 lives are lost to suicide every day, Amazing that for every 9 another 30 tried but fortunately failed,
Less than 50% of Australians with a mental health problem access professional support. Stigma and embarrassment remain a significant barrier to getting help.
TOGETHER WE CAN BREAK THE STIGMA OF MENTAL HEALTH.

"Last Week’s speaker was among the best we have had for years and those that missed him missed a great talk. He spoke of an organisation that helps kids with issues of all sorts. He himself has been “through the mill” as a young man and has come out the other side and now teaching and helping kids with problems..
Great presentation and sorry so many missed it".
