I always remember the line from the “Wizard of Oz” when I return from travelling. There is no place like home. My son, grandson and I had 2 weeks in USA visiting Disneyland, Universal Studios, Bear Mountain and Las Vegas. The trip was great except for the very cantankerous GPS given to us from the car hire firm which tried to send us from Bear Mountain to Las Vegas via Canada! Not really but thankfully my son used his phone to get us on track and the 10 hour trip predicted by the GPS became much less. Great time but great to be home.

A big thank you to Neil Jones for deputising for me in my absence. Had a great time knowing the club was in such capable hands.

Bruce Kuhn needs people to host the incoming team for the Group Cultural exchange. Bruce has said he will host but this is unfair as he leaves next day. Bruce’s commitment to the club has been exceptional, getting great guest speakers and generally being there when we need help. Can I ask you all to help hosting if you can? The dates are 9, 10 and 11^th of March. John Monks is taking them out on his boat on the Saturday and Sunday is the Rotary function, so you only have to entertain them Monday and deliver them Tuesday to Coomera club. Please consider this. Bruce is a great Ambassador for our club and needs support.

Next week is the visit to the Kurrawa Surf club. This is an opportunity to see behind the scenes in the new set up so it should be an interesting evening.

Service

The Service Director advised that the projects relating to Rosemary and Cedar houses were continuing.

As a thank you these establishments have offered to provide a morning tea and a dinner. These are yet to be arranged

It was noted that the Club has previously committed another $4000 to the Merrimac State High School Robotics Program for the purchase of further equipment

Foundation

The Foundation Director advised that all Rotary Cakes and Puddings had been sold. He will now follow up on the collection of Foundation contributions from members

Membership

The Membership Director proposed a special fund raising night that would involve other Rotary Clubs with Matt Rogers as the guest speaker. After discussion it was agreed that due to the organisation that would be required, a subcommittee be formed and report back to the next Board meeting. Harold Busch and Graham Sivyer volunteered to join Nigel on this committee

The Membership Director also suggested that 5000 brochures be printed and delivered to promote membership of the Rotary Club of Broadbeach. However this would be at a cost of $3000 thus a suitable sponsor would need to be found

Youth

A request has been received from RYLA in regard to the Club sponsoring a candidate. It was noted that more details are being sought in regard to this; however, the Board agreed that there would be no issue in sponsoring a candidate not associated with the Club

General Business

Malaria Vaccine Project

Vice President Neil Jones gave an overview of the Malaria Vaccine Project.

Moved Graham Sivyer Seconded Noel Hodges that the Club donate $5000 to the Malaria Vaccine Project. Carried.

It was noted that needs to be paid by 30^th June 2019

Scooter Report -

John Monks gave an overview of the scooter report (as detailed in attachment F). He further stated that an amount of $7600 is required for Insurance, Tyres, Batteries and Maintenance for the remainder of the year.

Moved Noel Hodges Seconded Neil Baldwin that the Board approve an amount of $800 as a contribution towards the purchase of 12 scooters (this amount is required over the $35000 grant received for the purchase of scooters. That is, an amount of $35800 is required for the purchase of the 12 scooters)

Carried.

MEMBER ANECDOTE

BRUCE KUHN

We lived at Horn Island for almost four years 1997 to 2000, our two oldest girls were four and five when we arrived. Living on an island in the Torres Straits had some quirks, such as being able to swim off the beach and spear a few crayfish and maybe a coral trout when things were fairly quiet at work, i mean when I finished work... I had also made a contact at Saibai Island, which is only two kilometres from PNG, who would advise me when the Papuan’s had arrived to sell their wares so they could purchase flour and sugar etc. Some of those wares were mud crabs. As I was prepared to pay top dollar, $5.00 each, my contact would readily fill my standard order of 20 at a time, neatly fitting into two banana boxes, and flown back to us by whichever pilot passing through Saibai who noticed the two boxes with my name on it at the end of the Saibai runway. Upon arrival, they would be cleaned and steamed and packaged away for beach or boat trip lunches. If only I could have the same order delivered now!!

It was also a great opportunity for the girls, weekends were taken up swimming the shallow reefs (more crayfish), uncovering turtle nests (and carefully covering them over again) and visiting beaches with no other persons in sight (and devouring mudcrabs). The locals also looked out for the turtles, particularly when they hatched, but I won’t go into the locals diet right here. I visited a house one day and there were a number of baby turtles swimming in a bucket of water. I was allowed to return that afternoon when the girls arrived back on the ferry from school to show them the baby turtles. I wasn’t expecting that they would be given a baby turtle each though. So for the next six months, after I had turned the clam shell sand pit into a turtle rookery beside the front door of our house, I would dutifully go to the boat ramp about 400 metres away and get two buckets of fresh sea water each day and replace that amount with the turtles. I also had to slice up squid bait so the girls could hand feed them each day. Our house pets were certainly a talking point for any visitors arriving at the front door. Prior to us leaving the island on holidays, we packed them up and took them to a beach on the far side of the island, said our farewells and followed them as they swam off over the shallow reef until they reached the edge and disappeared into the distance. Hopefully they will be about the age to return to dig their own nests and not become a tasty snack for another sea creature in that great circle of life.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION - ENDOWMENT FUND

We all understand the importance of supporting the Annual Fund and Polio Fund but the Endowment Fund offers outstanding value as well. Its Annual Report has just been
released too. As at 30 June 2018 promised commitments to the fund stood at US$805m and market value of investments was US$466m making a total value of US$1,271m
By permanently investing the contributions, the Endowment gives future generations of Rotarians the certainty of funding that will allow them to design and implement innovative projects, year after year.
In 2017/18, earnings from these investments provided US$15.6 million in support for the World Fund, SHARE, Areas of Focus, Rotary Peace Centers, Global Grants and Polio.
A gift of say US$25,000 in 1996 would have since generated about $30,000 in spendable earnings. And as the Endowment Fund grows, so does the good that Rotarians can do in the world.
Gifts can be made either as cash contributions or as pledges, such as through an estate plan. Contributions are not tax deductible.

District 9640 Group Cultural Exchange with District 3780 Philippines

D3780 Team Welcome & D9640 Team Launch Sunday 10 March 2019

Broadbeach will be hosting this important District event at the Quality Hotel, Mermaid Waters with a luncheon on Sunday 10 March.

We will be hosting the D3780 Team members at that time and Bruce's outbound team will depart a few days later so in order to ensure maximum support for this function it will replace our normal weekly meeting scheduled for Tuesday 12 March.

More details in due course but please note your diary accordingly.

District 9640 Conference 29-31 March 2019

OK, so it seems still to be a long way off but accommodation will soon become hard to get - some places are already fully booked.

Why attend a District Conference?

Well, to start, it's fun: you meet lots of interesting people
You will hear Keynote Speakers for which you normally would pay hundreds of dollars to attend
The dinners are always superb fellowship events. The Saturday Night dinner is always very vibrant; this year they have a top notch Jazz & Swing band.
You learn a couple of things about Rotary which you may not have known before

Kevin O’Brian proposed a Toast to Australian Tennis, which was very well received.

President Pauline welcomed everyone, including the Guest Speaker for the night, Ross.

Bruce Kuhn gave a short message about the Group Cultural Exchange, and indicated that more Accommodation is needed, if there are any volunteers?? Please contact Bruce.

Andrew reported we are sponsoring a RYLA Candidate.

The raffle and Heads and Tails Winners were Neil Jones and Graham Sivyer.

Our Guest Speaker was Ross Muir, who we are sponsoring to go on the Group Cultural Exchange to the Philippines this year as part of Bruce's team.. Even though he has moved to Queensland, he still supports the Melbourne AFL. He told us quite a bit about his back-ground which was varied and very interesting, especially about the Computer work for the Police Department.

Bruce did a very good job of thanking the Guest Speaker.
