Fellow Rotarians and Friends,

Welcome to 2021, commenced in casual style with a great turn out at Mermaid Bowls last Tuesday. It was lovely to welcome potential members Maria and Jill along, thank you to everyone who made them feel welcome and especially to Noel H who imparted some bowls tutelage to them (and me).

I trust everyone had a wonderful Christmas and festive season generally. It was an honour to deliver puddings to some scooter recipients just prior to Christmas and see the joy of such a small gift imparted. The project continues to go from strength to strength, thank you to all members who are or who have ever been involved, it’s a legacy to be proud of.

Thank you to Jim for arranging our first guests from NBN next Tuesday, please register. This will be followed by the first board meeting of 2021.

We are not meeting on Tuesday 26 January (Australia Day), however The Rotary Club of Gold Coast are marking 100 years of Rotary in Australia with a Free Australia Day Family Event in the Gold Coast Botanic Gardens from 10am -1pm, all are welcome.

Grace has generously allocated an additional Bunnings sizzle seeing the Boxing Day event had record low patronage, obviously everyone got Coles Myer gift cards instead of Bunnings vouchers for Christmas and went elsewhere that day. Thank you to those who have volunteered for the first sizzle on 30 January.

JANUARY IS VOCATIONAL SERVICE MONTH

By bringing together people from diverse professions and backgrounds, Rotary recognizes the importance of all skills and occupations. In Rotary, your professional life and vocational service go hand in hand. Members have a dual responsibility to represent their occupations within their club and exemplify the ideals of Rotary in their places of work. January is Vocational Service Month, a great time to use the Vocational Service in Action handbook and share it with your fellow club members. It can help you learn more about vocational service and offer ideas so you can practice it through your service activities, in your personal life, and in your career.

FROM OUR LAST MEETING TUESDAY 12 JANUARY 2021

Thirty one members and guests enjoyed a wonderful evening at Mermaid Beach Bowls Club. Fifteen participated in the bowls with our resident expert, Noel Hodges, providing some coaching advice where appropriate, The rest of us sat on the sidelines enjoying some fellowship and refreshment whilst showing occasional interest in the bowls.

Of particular note was the regularity with which the bowlers sent down a bowl on the wrong bias and the lack of difficulty in determining the closest bowl to the jack at the conclusion of each end. The one obvious fact was that all participants had some fun.

Refreshment, fellowship and dinner from the club menu followed

President Les thanked all for attending and added his best wishes for the year ahead.

A big thank you to Robyn & Peter for organising a relaxed and enjoyable function to start our 2021 activities.
