Fellow Rotarians and friends,

Our AGM was held at the hub on Tuesday night, and I’m delighted to announce Neil Baldwin will be our President Elect for 2024/2025.Thanks again Neil for stepping up as president. Kouma delighted us again with another gourmet Greek themed meal and our guest speaker Rod Preston presented the members with another entertaining and humorous history lesson about the mail.

A big thankyou to all the members that helped at the BBQ at Bunnings and thankyou to Harold and Barbara for setting up the hub ready for Tuesday night.

Christine Jones is still in Pindara Hospital and we all wish her a speedy recovery.

Please join us Tuesday 28^th November at the hub as our District Governor Dave Harmon will be joining us. Also our Christmas party will be the 12^th December at the hub. Please bring along an unwrapped toy for our annual Gold Coast Uni and Pindara hospital toy drive.

SUPPORT OUR CHARITY DURING FOUNDATION MONTH

NOVEMBER IS ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH AND THE MOST APPROPRIATE TIME TO MAKE A PERSONAL DONATION TO THE ANNUAL FUND OR THE POLIO FUND.

Ideally "Every Rotarian will make a personal contribution to the Foundation Every Year".

Become a Centurion by contributing A$100 or a Sustaining Member by contributing US$100. All donations, no matter how large or small are valued and help our charity fulfill its aim of "DOING GOOD IN THE WORLD".

"WRITE A BOOK IN A DAY" SUCCESS

Our sponsorship of Benowa State High School's participation in the National "Write a Book in a Day" competition has brought success with the Benowa Creative Club winning the Best Upper High novel in Queensland.

Over 1000 schools enter each year and all entries raise funds for Kids Cancer Research.

As State winners their book will now be published and distributed to children's hospital wards, particularly in oncology for kids to read while undergoing chemotherapy.

Broadbeach Rotary Club contribution is acknowledged in the book.

FROM OUR MEETING 14 NOVEMBER 2023

Meeting was called to order at 6.30pm by Chairman Neil Jones, who in turn introduced President Andrew. Guests and partners were welcomed, fellowship invited while meal being served. Kouma and his team served an amazing Greek variety of foods followed by a generous sweet dish attendance…….19.

At 7.00pm President Andrew introduced Secretary Harold to conduct the AGM for years 2022/2023. See AGM notes on Clubrunner for details of this meeting.

There being no Sergeant session this meeting chairman Neil conducted the raffle (won by Malcolm Davies) and heads and tails (won by Pauline Armstrong).

Following the AGM President Andrew introduced the guest speaker Rod Preston.

Rod’s passion for all things postal kept his audience well entertained through the amazing research and travels he has done to gain information on the postal system.

**Some Highlights.

***In Australia no longer the foot slogger or the bike rider postie equipped with a whistle. We now have the sun protected mobility scooter postie with parcel room on the back of his rig.

***Early days in Africa produced stamps with a Pulp Fiction theme. These themes were drawn up, made into a book cover and novelists were invited to write a book following the cover theme. Mostly the emphasis were on love stories.

***King Charles in 1635 constructed post roads and introduced post boys. Distance traveled by post boys required stopovers hence the introduction of postal inns….postal inns led to ladies of the night who would hang their hair out of the window decorated in a fashion to advertise their trade.

***In 1860 the Missourie to Sacramento postal route required the need for pony express posties. These guys carried mail in their saddle bags and had very strict rules of employment. One rule was to carry the bible with conditions written inside and never to stray. Well they did and their dalliance led to Ipenena where the song “Girl from Ipenena” originated. IN Hellengberg the original pony express station is still standing as a museum complete with an express riders bible.

***Isolated mail recipients were a commonality in Australia during the snowy mountain construction period. In 1949 the Jindabyne post office setup three outposts for mail distribution. A smart post office manager realised the need for comfort to some of the worker so introduced ladies of the night delivered to the three outposts, even providing the comfort of a postal van with mattress in the back.

***Stealing has not been uncommon with posties. England had it’s highway men, America had it’s outlaws and in Australia we had thunderbolt. But the biggest recorded postie thief of all was Gabriel Granados in South America who stole 42768 items and was sentenced to 384912 years in prison (reduced on appeal).
