2024-25 annual theme revealed
Rotary International President-elect Stephanie Urchick announced the 2024-25 theme, The Magic of Rotary, at the International Assembly on 8 January. The assembly is Rotary’s annual learning event for incoming governors and leaders. Urchick, a member of the Rotary Club of McMurray, Pennsylvania, USA, called on members to use the magic of Rotary to recognize and amplify the organization’s power to save lives. 19 members and 13 guests gathered at The Hub for our usual end of month fellowship night.
Acting Sergeant Kevin opened proceedings. David O'Dwyer proposed a toast to all the SES and other volunteers supporting their communities through recent flood events.
President Andrew welcomed all in attendance. Andrew then outlined the work of Radio Lollipop and sought agreement to provide Christmas gifts for all children in Gold Coast University Hospital
and members willingly committed to provide a gift or donate $25 to enable the purchase of a gift. Andrew will co-ordinate through his newsagency at Benowa Gardens.
Grahame & Noel did the catering with some help from Kay Hodges and Pat Curr and as usual we were spoiled with pre dinner nibbles, superb main of grilled salmon and asparagus, potato bake and salad and followed by berries and ice-cream for desert. Congratulations to all involved.
Kevin conducted a friendly sergeant's session during which he had the members do the work either by fining someone or contributing a happy dollar.
He asked Pauline to draw the raffle and specified number 60 which was duly drawn and turned out to be his (Four Way Test?) Guest Judy Hutchison won Heads and Tails.
Jim Hawkins presented the contents of a donation collection box he has placed at the Gum Nut Cafe in Mudgeeraba and commended President Andrew on this fund raising initiative.
Andrew reminded everyone regarding the 50th Anniversary Dinner at Emerald Lakes Golf Club on Saturday 26 November and asked members to advise him directly of their attendance/apology.

WEEKLY LAUGHS
The other day a lady said something to her son about driving a Jalopy; and he looked at her quizzically and said, "What the heck is a Jalopy?" He had never heard of the word jalopy! She knew she was old ... but not that old.
Well, I hope you are Hunky Dory, Right as rain and as Happy as Larry after you read this and chuckle.
About a month ago, I illuminated some old expressions that have become obsolete because of the inexorable march of technology. These phrases included: Don't touch that dial, carbon copy, you sound like a broken record, and hung out to dry.
Back in the olden days we put on our best bib and tucker or bag of fruit, and dressed to the nines.
Strike me pink, Holy Moley!
We were in like Flynn and living the life of Riley ; and even a regular guy couldn't accuse us of being a boofhead, knucklehead, a nincompoop . Not for all the tea in China, or rice for that matter!
We wake up from a short nap, and before we can say, "Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle!” or, "This is a fine kettle of fish!"
Poof, go the words of our youth, the words we've left behind.
Where have all those great phrases gone?
Long gone: Pshaw, The milkman did it. Don't forget to pull the chain. Knee high to a grasshopper. Fiddlesticks! I'll see you in the funny farm. Wake up and smell the roses.
Leaves us to wonder where Superman will find a phone booth...
