Firstly, I was delighted to speak to Frank and Agnes Adorjan on Wednesday night. They were appreciative of the clubs best wishes and is looking forward to when Frank can come along to meetings again. Frank has some mobility issues, but none that will stop him from enjoying our fellowship at a meeting. Both send their regards to all.
What a great night at our meeting last Tuesday. It was so wonderful to have over 40 in attendance, including the Mermaid Club members and partners, partners of our members plus Christine from Ballarat and Gillian from Bairnsdale Clubs visiting us. Both Christine and Gillian are Victorians in unintended COVID exile. Given the increase in numbers there, plus the latest border restrictions starting from Saturday, we have anointed them honorary Queenslanders, even if they refuse to acknowledge the Suns as a football team!
Lovely to see PHF Kay, Joan and Anne enjoying the evening as well. Martin celebrated another trip around the sun on Tuesday, many happy returns for the 4th and it was great to see Yong. Sergeant Bill lightened the coinage burden and told some of the funniest policing jokes that I have ever heard (most of them for the 20th time)!
The Hotel has worked out how to manage COVID compliance, Darren and team are doing an excellent job, nothing is too much trouble. Mermaid Beach President Cliff and I spoke, we both see a lot of opportunities for the two clubs to collaborate socially and in service for the coming year, something that is being discussed more broadly at the Cluster 7 Presidents Zoom meeting next week with AG Sheila.
Our speaker, Chief Superintended Mark Wheeler, enthralled the crowd with his honest explanation of policing the borders. I don’t envy his job, it’s a balancing act of education, enforcement, collaboration and supporting not only his staff, partner agencies and the public. He relayed how suppression and not eradication is the only option at this time and that a vaccine may be a long time off (if ever). My daughter is getting married in Italy, September 2021 so it was sobering to hear we may be in international isolation with mandated quarantine for returning travellers potentially for the next two years.
We are at the Hub Tuesday night, to hear the Martin Ingram story, the person behind the badge. In advance, superb catering by Noel and Grahame. At this stage Grace from Bunnings will also be our guest, she should be able to explain the Sausage Sizzle rules for us and it’ll be great for her to see the outcome of Bunnings support to the club of several years. Partners and guests are welcome.
Don’t forget Normie Rowe on the 25th. I have extended invitation to Gold Coast Presidents, the room can hold 120 and still be COVID compliant (this week anyway) so I hope we get a few along. Several have expressed an interest already. I encourage early registration for that one, especially if you are bringing partners or guests.

Take action to create positive change locally and globally
Supporting the environment becomes an area of focus
Rotary has a new area of focus — supporting the environment — after a unanimous vote by The Rotary Foundation Trustees and the RI Board of Directors. Rotary has long supported activities that sustain the environment, and in the past five years we have allocated $18 million to such projects through global grants tied to other areas of focus. Adding the environment as a distinct cause formalizes our longtime community-based efforts and will give Rotary members more ways to increase our global impact and expand our reach.
The Foundation is developing the eligibility criteria for grants in this area of focus and will have more information beginning in October. It will start accepting global grant applications focused on the environment on 1 July 2021.

Why giving to the Annual Fund makes a big impact
Did you know that more than 400,000 people and 35,000 clubs contributed to the Annual Fund in 2018-19? Every one of these vital donations adds up to make a bigger impact through our SHARE system, in which contributions are invested for three years and then split between the World Fund and the District Designated Fund (DDF).
These donations help Rotary clubs promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water and sanitation, save mothers and children, support education, and grow local economies. So these gifts make a difference both close to home and around the globe.

Mark outlined the history of a past NSW border closure for the Spanish Flu in 1919. This was a severe pandemic with 50 million lives lost worldwide and 15,000 in Australia.
The border was closed for 6 months on 5 Feb 1919.
Mark advised the current strategy is suppression and not eradication as eradication was not possible.
The Police were required to shut the borders with 48 hours notice. 17 entry points were shrunk to 3 check points and later expanded to 6 check points to address community concerns and inconveniences.
Difficult to satisfy everyone's concerns and the main aim is to provide the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
Since July 1000 vehicles have been turned back with 1.3 Million border passes issued.
The Australian Defence Force, the State Emergency Service, the Rural Fire Service and the Transport and Main Roads personnel have been helping control the border check points.
Covid 19 testing now takes 24 hrs. Quarantine is being carried out in the Voco hotel Surfers Paradise. From 10 July those quarantining pay for their accommodation.
Fines for lies and evasion are $4000-$13000 with a mandatory Court appearance. The magistrate can impose imprisonment if needed.
Mark advised the Covid 19 will be here until a vaccine is found and is likely to be 12 to 18 months away if ever and the border controls are likely to be the last to open.
