Fellow Rotarians and Friends

I’m told I missed a very pleasant evening last Tuesday at the Hub.  Many thanks to the chefs and helpers on the night.  Thanks to VP Alain for chairing in my absence.  With the borders reopening, my daughter flew back in from Melbourne so I was delighted to see her after 12 months, my apologies for missing the evening.  The night raised just over $500 for the Rotary Foundation, thank you to all involved.
This Tuesday will see the induction of Luella Smith, proposed by Russ.  I look forward to inducting Luella, my first induction.  Our guests that night will be Juanita Barber, who is a past President of Miami Combined Probus and past 9640 District Governor Douglas Geekie.
On Sunday 13 December, our sister club, the Rotary Club of Tauranga will celebrate its 75th Anniversary Celebration.  We will be joining them via Zoom at the Hub for a 15 minute slot with our friends from the sister  Rotary Club of Kasaoka.  More on that next week.
Not long now until we finish for 2020.  A reminder to register and pay for the Christmas party on 15 December at the Surfers Paradise Golf Club.  I look forward to seeing you there.

Yours in Rotary

Les

FROM OUR LAST MEETING TUESDAY 1 DECEMBER 2020

Scribe: Rock O'Keefe

Now this is a meal we should have often! It is the best meal I have had at just about any Rotary Club! Drinks were accompanied by  a selection of assorted nuts, crisps and green peas that looked as if covered with wasabi (I wasn’t game to try them).Entre was chipolatas on a dinner roll, then a large T Bone steak (cooked to perfection) with liberal coating of mushroom sauce, buttered bread stick, salad and potato with sour cream and chives. Dessert was a portion of cheesecake with ice cream and mixed berries. Coffee/tea was served with a gold wrapped Ferrero Rocher. Congrats to the chef team of Noel Hodges, Kay Hodges, Ann Phingsthorne, Grahame Werrell, and the washing up by Martin. Superb effort and set a high standard to follow. The drinks were served by Noel Phingsthorne, and maestro Graham provided the music.

Chairman Alain opened the meeting inviting Brian P to give the toast. Brian toasted the Global Polio workers who have helped to rid the world of this scourge. Children are still being vaccinated in Africa & Asia as added protection. Only Pakistan (with 81 cases) and Afghanistan (56 cases) still require a big effort.

In attendance were a number of partners and Inner Wheel members. Nassar distributed Christmas puddings to the mentors of the wheelchair recipients for delivery. He thanked the workers who cleaned and organised the Hub for the meeting.

Nasser announced that he attended a Foundation seminar. The Speaker was excellent and Nasser would like to have him attend a meeting as Guest Speaker. Nasser also stressed that when presenting cheques etc to other organisations we should use it to advertise our Club and promote Rotary,

Robyn reminded members that the Christmas party is on the 15th Dec at the Surfers Paradise Golf Club. It is a two-course dinner with Christmas pudding. Cost is $25 and MUST be pre-paid. Those who have not paid beforehand may be turned away at the door.

Sergeant Bill was at his Scrooge best, making sure everyone left with less money than they came with. The Lucky Door was won by Noel H, Heads & Tails by Kathy Lewis.

Jim Hawkins mentioned the Probus Club  that our club began, and reminded members Probus members will update us on the club's progress at our meeting  next Tuesday

Alain closed the meeting and thanked the ladies for attending, as well as the hardworking meal team.

WEEKLY LAUGHS

Some things to contemplate this week.

++  If poison passes its expiration date, is it more poisonous, or is it no longer poisonous?
++  Which letter is silent in the word "Scent," the S or the C?
++  Do twins ever realize that at least one of them is unplanned?
++  Why is the letter W, in English, called double U? Shouldn't it be called double V?
++  Maybe oxygen is slowly killing you and It just takes 75-100 years to fully work.
++  Every time you clean something, you just make something else dirty.
++  The word "swims" upside-down is still "swims"
++  100 years ago everyone owned a horse and only the rich had cars.  Today everyone has cars and only the rich own horses.
++  At a movie theater, which arm rest is yours?
++  If people evolve from monkeys, why are monkeys still around?
++  Why is there a 'D' in fridge, but not in refrigerator?
++  Who knew what time it was when the first clock was made?
++  Ever wonder why the word funeral starts with FUN?
++  Why isn't a Fireman called a Water-man?
++  How come Lipstick doesn't do what it says?
++  If money doesn't grow on trees, how come Banks have Branches?
++  If a Vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a Humanitarian eat?
++  How do you get off a non-stop Flight?
++  Why are goods sent by ship called CARGO and those sent by truck SHIPMENT?
++  Why do we put cups in the dishwasher and the dishes in the Cupboard?
++  Why do doctors 'practice' medicine? Are they having practice at the cost of the patients?
++  Why is it called 'Rush Hour' when traffic moves at its slowest then?
++  How come Noses run and Feet smell?
++  Why do they call it a TV 'set' when there is only one?
++  What are you vacating when you go on a vacation?
++  Did you know if you replace "W" with "T"  in: "What, Where and When", you get the answer to each of them?
