Fellow Rotarians and friends
I am off to the conference in Lismore this weekend. I know I have said it often but these conferences do give you a broader understanding and appreciation of what Rotary is all about. The guest speakers look fantastic and come from a varied cohort of professions and interests. It is also a time to catch up with old friends. I will give you a brief report next meeting.
We are having a club assembly on April 2. Each Director (or a proxy) will be giving a report on the year so far. Questions will be welcomed and any suggestions for improvement will be considered. PE Graham will not be there as he will be gadding about Europe but I am sure I can field any queries you have. He has been very consultative approaching his year as President.
A reminder about our meeting on 18 April when Rod Preston returns for another entertaining and informative presentation. This is a combined meeting with the Inner Wheel ladies and you are free to invite any other friends who may be interested. Please just remember to register. I have invited Mermaid Beach club but to date have had no reply.
Thanks to everyone who helped with the Hub social night. I am sorry I had to leave early. It is always a lovely event and Chris and Lynn keep the standards high.
Have a great weekend.
Yours in Rotary
Pauline

SECRETARY REPORT - Tony Lewis
I am unsure how many of our members are aware of the “Rule of 85”, so the following is an explanation.
If you want more information how this may apply to you, please let me know and I can discuss if further with you

Rule of 85”
The so-called “Rule of 85” is alive and well, although modified by the 2010 Council on Legislation. It is hard to find because it is not officially called the “Rule of 85”, nor a type of Rotary membership (“Active” or “Honorary” are the only two) – it is merely a provision listed under “excused absences” in the Standard Rotary Club Constitution. It provides that if a members combined age and years of service equal 85 years or greater, they are at least age 65, and they ask to be excused, then they are excused. Additionally, they don’t count against the club’s attendance figures.
Example: Member John Doe will be 65 in June 2015 and he will have 20 years of service in October 2015. This qualifies him for exclusion from attendance starting in October 2015. This will not affect his or her membership status in any way, but will simply allow the Club Attendance Secretary to exclude him from the attendance percent if he does not make a meeting. However, if he attends a meeting he should be counted toward your overall percentage.

One of the memorable incidents in my working life was at Tweed Shire Council where I was employed as the Director of Planning and Development. Tweed Shire Council has a very divided community on whether there should be development or not in the Shire. The division is almost 50% for and 50% against. Whilst there we had a major development application submitted for all the land behind Kingscliff. As part of the assessment on whether this development should be approved or not , a major environmental study was required. The land was owned by Dr Segal and his family and the land is basically all of the flat land adjacent to the Kingscliff Library , west of the  Woolworths Supermarket and north to the Kingscliff RSL. A substantial land development application.

The anti development community did not want to see any development on this land at all.

The local conservationists argued that some of this land was home to the rarest snail in Australia. This snail is called the Mitchell Rainforest Snail.

Two highly qualified environmental consultants were flown up from Sydney to establish whether part of the land contained this snail. Yes they had studs and dreadlocks and wore jeans.

They searched all of the rainforest type habitat trying to find this snail. They were unable to find this snail until the very last day when they found a single specimen. There was much joy and celebration at finding this snail and the snail was exposed for extensive photographing.

Unfortunately a Kookaburra swooped down whilst they were getting ready to photograph and carried the snail away whilst the two environmentalists stood there speechless for the first time in many days.

All of this land still remains vacant to this very day.

FROM OUR LAST MEETING 26 MARCH 2019

Scribe: Neil Jones

A fellowship evening at The Hub and although there were only seventeen in attendance, a relaxed and enjoyable evening was had by all.
Kevin O'Brien was sergeant.
Peter Tomlinson raised an excellent toast to all involved in Australia's rural industries.
President Pauline welcomed those in attendance with special mention of honorary members Ian & Uwe.
Our Hub caterers provided the usual high standard meal including canapes, main of roast beef and pork with  5 vegetables and pie, cream & icecream to finish.

John Monks alerted members to the steel bars fitted to all the windows and sliding glass doors. These were provided by the Labrador Men's Shed at a cost of $750 for the materials.
He also advised that we currently have 46 scooter recipients and 3 applications in the pipeline so again nearing our cap of 50 recipients.
John then gave a brief report on the club's hosting of the Philippines Group Vocational Exchange Team. Activities over the 4 days were wide and varied and thoroughly enjoyed by both our guests and the hosts.

Neil Jones gave a brief update on the Malaria Vaccine Project highlighting the receipt of a grant of $500,000 from the Federal Government Medical Research Future Fund. This enables the further human trials of the vaccine to be completed in Brisbane and other essential development research to be commenced. The project fund raising has now exceeded $1.04m and well on the way to our immediate goal of $1.5m.

Sergeant Kevin then proceeded to lighten everyone's pockets with the help of bunyips Peter Dimond and Neil Jones.  Kevin also fessed up to having received a $20 donation from one of his scooter recipients when delivering their Christmas cake and duly handed a $20 note to Treasurer Noel adding a gold coin as interest to the fine box.

Robyn won the raffle and Noel H won heads & tails.

WEEKLY LAUGHS

Brexit and the Medical Profession:

Physicians were unable to reach a consensus on whether the UK should Brexit.
The Allergists were in favour of scratching it, but the Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves.
The Gastroenterologist's had sort of a gut feeling about it, but the Neurologists thought May had a lot of nerve.
Meanwhile, Obstetricians felt certain everyone was labouring under a misconception, while the Ophthalmologists considered the idea short sighted.
Pathologists yelled, "Over my dead body!" while the Paediatricians said, "Oh, grow up!
The Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while the Radiologists could see right through it.
Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing and the Internists claimed it would indeed be a bitter pill to swallow.
The Plastic Surgeons opined that this proposal would "put a whole new face on the matter."
The Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the Urologists were pissed off at the whole idea.
Anaesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas, and those lofty Cardiologists didn't have the heart to say no.

In the end, the Proctologists won out, leaving the entire decision up to the a**holes in Parliament!

"Watching your daughter being collected by her date feels like handing over a million dollar Stradivarius to a gorilla."

"Doc, I can't stop singing 'What's New Pussycat?'
"That sounds like Tom Jones Syndrome."
"Is it common?"
"Well, 'It's Not Unusual.'"
---------------------------------------

Q: How do hair stylists speed up their job?

Q: What is the noisiest game?
A: Tennis, you can't play it without raising a racket.

Q: What kind of school does a carpenter go to?
A: Boarding school.

Q: How does the man in the moon eat his food?
A: In satellite dishes.
