Apologies on not making our last meeting, Queen and country demanded my attention to matters of state (work). Thanks to VP Alain for wrangling the meeting in my absence. I’m told that the presentation from Carey Westwood and Wanjiru Waithaka regarding Manasprings was well received. Next week will see us hearing the Rock O’Keefe story, the person behind the badge. It is sure to be a special night as we are also welcoming officially, Maria Padilla to the club when I will be delighted to induct her.
The Hub meeting on 2 March, with catering by Noel, Noel and Grahame, promises to be a great night. I am working that night so will be an apology. The profits from the evening will be put towards the Global Grant commitment for Pentecost. Please registered and partners/siblings/offspring and other guests are more than welcome.
The Cluster 7 Rotary Baton Relay is on Friday 16th April. We are not planning to have a Tuesday meeting that week, rather be involved with the cluster clubs. Broadwater Southport is managing the day and has requested that we manage the BBQ at days end from 5pm at the Kokoda Memorial Wall in Cascade Gardens which we are all invited to. It is hoped that one of the GC television stations will do a live cross. Please put that event in your calendar, more to come on that.
Thank you in advance to the Bunnings volunteers for this Saturday. The forecast is for storms later in the day but fine until then, so it promises to be a good day for selling snags.
The Club recently sponsored a RYTS Awardee, Elhayna Jacob. We were unable to find someone locally, but the board was very keen to have an awardee for these life changing Rotary in Action programs. Along with the Hope Island, Surfers Sunrise, e club of next Gen, Nerang, and Ashmore clubs we assisted the Rotary Satellite Club of Tamborine Mountain, who were able to facilitate eight (8) youths at RYTS and RYLA. The satellite club was chartered in February 2020, but with COVID limitations, they were not able to raise any significant funds. However, they still wanted to give the youth in their community the amazing opportunity that is RYTS and RYLA and thank the club for playing a part in that wonderful contribution to our community.
Until next week.
Yours in Rotary
Les

FROM OUR LAST MEETING TUESDAY 16 FEBRUARY 2021 Scribe: Neil Baldwin
Meeting opened by Sergeant Bill Rex at 6.30pm and introduced Vice President Alain Charles to welcome everyone – as President Les Bulluss is an Apology for tonight’s meeting.
Vice President Alain Charles welcomed Guest Speakers – Carey Westwood and Wanjiru Waithaka from Guest Speakers from Manasprings, Edwina Hutchison, Maria Padilla and Honorary Member Uwe Seifert. It was noted that only 23 were present (18 members, 1 Honorary Member, 2 Guests and 2 Guest Speakers) and unfortunately Bill Waller had to leave the meeting to deal with a family emergency.
Pauline Armstrong proposed the Toast to Manasprings.
Reports:
PP Graham Sivyer provided an update on the Pentecost Island Hospital Building Project including the interaction from the Rotaract Club with the Project. Graham also expressed sincere thanks to members Brian Pearson and Russ Hutchison for their financial contributions towards the Project.
PP Noel Hodges advised of the installation of 2 Solar Lights at the Hub – courtesy of the Vouchers provided from Bunnings.
Sergeant Bill Rex utilised Guest Edwina Hutchison as the Bunyip and then took delight in taking a deal of funds from the members present.
Raffle was won by Uwe Seifert
Heads and Tails was won by Guest Speaker Wanjiru Waithaka
PP Pauline Armstrong introduced Guest Speakers Carey Westwood and Wanjiru Waithaka from Manasprings, which is an organisation that is Grassroots women transforming communities in Kenya.
Manasprings empoyers Kenyan women in Grassroots Leadership and operates in both urban slums of Nairobi as well as remote areas – and was formed in 2015.
Currently has 350 grassroots women, 185 grassroots community development initiatives and 25,000 to 30,000 direct beneficiaries – vulnerable children – women and families.
Women love to serve and it comes from the heart.
It was noted that women provide the cornerstone of Kenyan families and without women there is nothing.
Manasprings provides:
Residential Leadership Events – up to 3 nights, 4 days for 30 women, held at Retreat Centres;
Local Chapters – women meet to support, encourage and share with women from the same community;
Emergency Relief – food and other resources given during times of crisis.
The organisation brings together women from different counties and languages and are women of integrity and care.
Carey showed a Video on the workings and outcomes of Manasprings. – which highlighted courageous and wonderful women who are making a difference within their community. It was noted that there is no Government Funding provided towards this Project.
It was highlighted how a wife had lost her Husband and then had everything taken by the in-laws as she refused an arranged marriage and therefore had to start again.
There are ways to contribute towards the Project – via Monthly, One-off or Become a Fundraiser.
