Fellow Rotarians,

I would like to remind you of the District Conference this coming weekend at Sea World Resort Conference centre. It’s not too late to register. If you haven’t registered and are planning to go, could you please register as soon as possible, even if you do not intend to partake in any meals. Online registrations would greatly assist conference organisers and would avoid hold ups on your arrival.

For those members attending I look forward to seeing you there. It should a fantastic conference with some first rate speakers.

Last Tuesday we had the pleasure of welcoming our Partners, our Honorary members as well as GCE representative Sarah McGuiness and her GCE partner Jacinta Madigan at the Hub. Sarah and Jacinta together with two other members and team leader Karen Wibberley from the Ashmore Rotary Club are the outgoing Group Cultural Exchange to Florida representing District 9640. Both ladies spoke about their existing career, their family life and their expectations about being a GSE representative. They were extremely grateful of the support of their sponsoring Rotary Clubs. Sarah was appreciative of Secretary Tony for assisting with her registration as well as PP Bruce for nominating her. She also thanked Past GSE Les Bullus as well as members of the Broadbeach Rotary Club. Sarah showed her appreciation with presentation of gifts to the above-mentioned members. The GCE team will be farewelled at a dinner on the 17^th March at the Volunteer Marine Rescue Main Beach.

This coming Tuesday we Have as guest speaker the Past QLD Premier Robert Borbridge – topic will be “ after the 2018 Commonwealth Games”. It is also a Ladies night,please register if you haven’t already done so.

Looking forward to welcoming you all at the Quality Hotel on Tuesday evening.

Occasionally I hear members say they are not able to get into the area in the Clubs website to view Club documents

Actually it is quite a simple process.

You need to be logged into the Club's web site (if not already logged in go to the home page and at the top right corner it says member login).

Once logged in it will say (in the top right hand corner of the home page) "Member Area"

You just need to click on this heading and it will take you to a page where you can view Club activities.

One of these is "View Club Documents" You just need to click on this to view items such as Board minutes, member contact list, Club bylaws and constitution and many more sites.

Good to see Keith and Lorraine at the Hub last Tuesday for what was a very enjoyable night.
Bill Waller is commencing treatment for his Prostate cancer and will be absent for the next few weeks. We wish him well and hope for a speedy recovery.

MEMBER ANECDOTES

UWE SEIFERT

One of my brother's trips to Australia. His name was Gerhard. I brought him as a guest to a Broadbeach Rotary Club meeting which at that time was a male only club.

Gerhard could not speak a word of English so I had to do a lot of translating. He was an introvert while I am an extrovert. Even though he was four years my elder I felt he needed some life education so at the end of the meeting I took him to a local strip club called Megadrome.

To ensure the best education possible we took a front row seat.

Being my luck, I was dragged up on to the stage by one of the attractive young ladies to join her in a lap dance.

After that night I didn't think much more about it putting it away as one of life's experiences. The following week when preparing to attend Rotary I couldn't find my dinner badge.

My belief was that it had probably fallen out of my top pocket at some stage the previous week. When it was not at the meeting venue I requested a replacement badge be ordered.

Three or four weeks later and wearing my replacement badge the late passed president, Clive Evenden, who had had a make-up at Surfers Paradise, arrived at the meeting with my original dinner badge. A member of Surfers Paradise had found my badge at the strip club and passed it on to their Sergeant who duly fined Clive and the finder.

Naturally I was severely fined by the Broadbeach Sergeant at that time. My good friend Kevin O'Brien was one of the Rotarlight editors at that time so details of the incident were widely circulated throughout the District. Just goes to show who your friends really are!!

March is Water and Sanitation Month

Clean water and sanitation is a human right. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, they lead healthier and more successful lives.

We don't just build wells and walk away. Rotary members integrate water, sanitation, and hygiene into education projects. When children learn about disease transmission and practice good hygiene, they miss less school. And they can take those lessons home to their families, expanding our impact.

Polio Update

There has been 3 new cases of wild polio virus reported this year to end February, all of which occurred in Afghanistan. In the same period last year 2 new cases were reported in Afghanistan and 1 in Pakistan.

Pleasingly Pakistan has not reported a new case since 15 November 2017.

While significant strides have been made against the disease, polio remains a threat in hard-to-reach and underserved areas and conflict zones. Despite a historically low case count, as long as a single child has polio, all children are at risk, which underscores the need for continued funding and political commitment to eradication.

Rotary has committed to raising $150 million over the next three years, which will be matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, yielding $450 million for polio eradication activities, including immunization and surveillance.

Rotary started its polio eradication program PolioPlus in 1985, and in 1988 became a partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, along with WHO, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation later became a partner. Since the initiative launched, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases in 1988 to just 22 confirmed cases in 2017. Rotary has contributed a total of more than $1.7 billion — including matching funds from the Gates Foundation — and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries from polio.

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING 27TH FEBRUARY 2018

The meeting started with a well deserved toast by Neil Jones to our oldest Member Keith Hawton and his wife Lorraine and a welcome to our Honorary Members Ian Cowan and Uwe Seifert. The President welcomed the Guest Speakers, Visiting Rotarian Colin Laurenson (Manager of DIK) from Surfers Sunrise Club who chose the wrong night as guest speaker and the two Rotarian Partners in attendance.

Members should be aware that every meeting at the Hub is a Partners night.

Administration Director Bob Jordan gave a report on Jim Hawkins recent exploratory surgery and gauged the meeting’s feeling toward hiring a cleaner to prepare the hub for the monthly dinner meeting. This was necessary as the same few people consistently prepare the Hub for the Meeting and need a rest. The Members thought it was a sound proposal and Bob will put the club membership feeling to the Board.

We were presented by the usual excellent meal of 2 roasts, veges and desert preceded by finger food by Caterer Chris and we were entertained by Graham Sivyer again on his mandolin. Thank you once again Graham.

Heads and Tails was won by Harold and the raffle by Nigel.

We had the pleasure of 2 Guest Speakers Sarah McGuinness our former Police Officer of the Year and Jacinta Maddigan who are part of the outward GSE Team to Orlando Florida in April this year. The Ladies were introduced by PP Bruce Kuhn.

Both ladies outlined their profiles in detail and told us about their sponsored Clubs. Of course Sarah is sponsored by our Club. Sarah is a Police Officer in charge of the Pacific Fair Police Beat. Jacinta is a Social Worker specialising in Child Protection Children.

There are 3 other Members of the team Mellissa from Astonville, Brooke from Goondiwindi and Karen, the General Manager of the QSuper Centre.

The Ladies were very passionate about their chosen uniform with Aboriginal Print and the way they chose the background to their profiles to show Orlando the attractions and the cultures of the Gold Coast, their places of domicile and in general the mateship of Australians.

The Ladies held a few short competitions and the winners including myself received cute kangaroo pins with a Rotary badge on the kangaroo. These give away items were of good quality representing both Australia and Rotary.

The Ladies are attending 8 different Rotary Clubs in U.S.A , Universal Studios, Orlando Space Centre and Kennedy Space Centre to mention a few attractions.

Bruce thanked the Ladies and wished them well for their trip.

The President thanked the Guest Speakers and closed the meeting and the fellowship continued.

WEEKLY LAUGHS - THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE PART 2

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins
weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices?

Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?
If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible
